Canonical equivalence of a charge in a time dependent, spatially-homogeneous electromagnetic field to a time-dependent perturbed oscillator

Abstract

Here we prove that the classical (respectively, quantum) system, consisting of a particle moving in a static electromagnetic field, is canonically (respectively, unitarily) equivalent to a harmonic oscillator perturbed by a spatially homogeneous force field. This system is canonically and unitarily equivalent to a standard oscillator. Therefore, by composing the two transformations we can integrate the initial problem. Actually, the eigenstates of the initial problem turn out to be entangled states of the harmonic oscillator. When the magnetic field is spatially homogeneous but time-dependent, the equivalent harmonic oscillator has a time-varying frequency. This system can be exactly integrated only for some particular cases of the time dependence of the magnetic field. The unitary transformations between the quantum systems are a representation of the canonical transformations by unitary transformations of the corresponding Hilbert spaces.

Canonical equivalence of a particle in a magnetic field to a simple oscillator

Henryk Gzyl

It is proved that a classical (respec. quantum) system consisting of a particle in a constant magnetic field is canonically (respec. unitarily) equivalent to a 2-dimensional harmonic oscillator plus a free particle. It is also shown that the eigenvectors of the discrete spectrum are entangled states of the 2-dimensional harmonic oscillator.

Explicit Computation of the Quantum Phase of the Time Perturbed Harmonic Oscillator

Henryk Gzyl

We consider a simple harmonic oscillator subject to a time-dependent, spatially homogeneous perturbation and show that it is canonically equivalent to a non-perturbed oscillator. The canonical transformation that relates both systems can be implemented as a unitary transformation mapping the perturbed system and the non-perturbed systems onto each other. This unitary transformation allows us to explicitly compute the time dependence of the states of the perturbed system, and in particular to compute the phase that affects all states. The phase turns out to be a classical action along the classical trajectory of the origin (in phase space), along its motion under the action of perturbation. In this simple system, the transition probabilities due to the perturbation can also be computed explicitly. Our approach is independent of the magnitude of the perturbation, and does not require an adiabaticity assumption.

The time-dependent coupled oscillator model for the motion of a charged particle in the presence of a time-varying magnetic field

Salah Menouar, Mustapha Maamache, Jeong Ryeol Choi

The dynamics of time-dependent coupled oscillator model for the charged particle motion subjected to a time-dependent external magnetic field is investigated. We used canonical transformation approach for the classical treatment of the system, whereas unitary transformation approach is used when managing the system in the framework of quantum mechanics. For both approaches, the original system is transformed to a much more simple system that is the sum of two independent harmonic oscillators which have time-dependent frequencies. We therefore easily identified the wave functions in the transformed system with the help of invariant operator of the system. The full wave functions in the original system is derived from the inverse unitary transformation of the wave functions associated to the transformed system.

An Exact Quantum Theory of the Time-Dependent Harmonic Oscillator and of a Charged Particle in a Time-Dependent Electromagnetic Field

Harry R. Lewis, W. B. Riesenfeld

The theory of explicitly time-dependent invariants is developed for quantum systems whose Hamiltonians are explicitly time dependent. The central feature of the discussion is the derivation of a simple relation between eigenstates of such an invariant and solutions of the Schrödinger equation. As a specific well-posed application of the general theory, the case of a general Hamiltonian which settles into constant operators in the sufficiently remote past and future is treated and, in particular, the transition amplitude connecting any initial state in the remote past to any final state in the remote future is calculated in terms of eigenstates of the invariant. Two special physical systems are treated in detail: an arbitrarily time-dependent harmonic oscillator and a charged particle moving in the classical, axially symmetric electromagnetic field consisting of an arbitrarily time-dependent, uniform magnetic field, the associated induced electric field, and the electric field due to an arbitrarily time-dependent uniform charge distribution. A class of explicitly time-dependent invariants is derived for both of these systems, and the eigenvalues and eigenstates of the invariants are calculated explicitly by operator methods. The explicit connection between these eigenstates and solutions of the Schrödinger equation is also calculated. The results for the oscillator are used to obtain explicit formulas for the transition amplitude. The usual sudden and adiabatic approximations are deduced as limiting cases of the exact formulas.

Inverting a time-dependent harmonic oscillator potential by a unitary transformation and a class of exactly solvable oscillators

Ali Mostafazadeh

A time-dependent unitary (canonical) transformation is found that maps the Hamiltonian for a harmonic oscillator with time-dependent real mass and real frequency to that of a generalized harmonic oscillator with time-dependent real mass and imaginary frequency. The latter may be reduced to an ordinary harmonic oscillator by means of another unitary (canonical) transformation. A simple analysis of the resulting system leads to the identification of a previously unknown class of exactly solvable time-dependent oscillators. Furthermore, it is shown how one can apply these results to establish a canonical equivalence between some real and imaginary frequency oscillators. In particular it is shown that a harmonic oscillator whose frequency is constant and whose mass grows linearly in time is canonically equivalent with an oscillator whose frequency changes from being real to imaginary and vice versa repeatedly.

Constrained parameters and exact solution of Schrödinger equation of charged particle in a time-dependent electric field: A unitary transformation approach

Rachid Ahmim, Nabil Baouche, S. Askri

We present an exact analytical solution for the quantum dynamics of a charged particle subjected to both a time-dependent electric field and a static magnetic field aligned along the $$z$$ -direction. Using a systematic approach based on successive unitary transformations, we reduce the original three-dimensional problem to a two-dimensional system of decoupled, time-dependent harmonic oscillators. This technique produces free parameters that allow us to impose constrains to derive the exact solution of Schrödinger equation with the time-dependent Hamiltonian through the explicit derivation of the quantum propagator and shows the equivalence of this approach to established path integral methods for such systems. The developed framework provides new insights into quantum systems with time-dependent electromagnetic fields and offers analytical solutions.
