Abstract

We present a new paradigm for the dynamical simulation of interacting many-boson open quantum systems. The method relies on a variational ansatz for the $n$-boson density matrix, in terms of a superposition of photon-added coherent states. It is most efficient for the simulation of driven-dissipative systems where the state is well described by quantum fluctuations on top of a displaced field, making it suitable for the simulation of several coupled modes with large occupation numbers, that are otherwise very challenging using a Fock-space expansion. We test our method on several examples, demonstrating its potential application to the predictive simulation of interacting bosonic systems and cat qubits.

Variational analysis of driven-dissipative bosonic fields

Tim Pistorius, Hendrik Weimer

We present a method to perform a variational analysis of the quantum master equation for driven-disspative bosonic fields with arbitrary large occupation numbers. Our approach combines the $P$ representation of the density matrix and the variational principle for open quantum system. We benchmark the method by comparing it to wave-function Monte Carlo simulations and the solution of the Maxwell-Bloch equation for the Jaynes-Cummings model. Furthermore, we study a model describing Rydberg polaritons in a cavity field and introduce an additional set of variational parameters to describe correlations between different modes.

Simulating open quantum dynamics with time-dependent variational matrix product states: Towards microscopic correlation of environment dynamics and reduced system evolution

Florian A. Y. N. Schröder, Alex W. Chin

We report the development of an efficient many-body algorithm for simulating open quantum system dynamics that utilizes a time-dependent variational principle for matrix product states to evolve large system-environment states. Capturing all system-environment correlations, we reproduce the nonperturbative, quantum-critical dynamics of the zero-temperature spin-boson model, and then exploit the many-body information to visualize the complete time-frequency spectrum of the environmental excitations. Our ``environmental spectra'' reveal correlated vibrational motion in polaronic modes which preserve their vibrational coherence during incoherent spin relaxation, demonstrating how environment information could yield valuable insights into complex quantum dissipative processes.

Variational dynamics of open quantum systems in phase space

Debbie Eeltink, Filippo Vicentini, Vincenzo Savona

We present a method to simulate the dynamics of large driven-dissipative many-body open quantum systems using a variational encoding of the Wigner or Husimi-Q quasi-probability distributions. The method relies on Monte-Carlo sampling to maintain a polynomial computational complexity while allowing for several quantities to be estimated efficiently. As a first application, we present a proof of principle investigation into the physics of the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model with weak nonlinearity, providing evidence for the high efficiency of the phase space variational approach.

Variational Multi-Gaussian Phase-Space Bosonic Dynamics via Automatic Differentiation

Jacopo Tosca, Francesco Carnazza, Luca Giacomelli +1 more

We introduce a variational method for simulating the dynamics of interacting open quantum bosonic systems deep in the quantum regime. The method is based on a multidimensional Wigner phase-space representation and employs a variational multi-Gaussian , whose accuracy is systematically controlled by the number of Gaussian components. The variational equations of motion are derived from the Dirac-Frenkel principle and evaluated efficiently by combining the analytical structure of Gaussian functions with automatic differentiation. As a key physical application, we study a driven-dissipative two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard lattice with two-boson coherent driving and two-body losses. Using our dynamical approach, we compute the finite-size scaling of the Liouvillian spectral gap—extracted from the relaxation dynamics—which vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. Our results reveal critical slowing down with dynamical exponents of the 2D quantum Ising universality class, demonstrating the power of our method to capture complex quantum dynamics in large open systems.

Accurate Two-Time Correlation from a Pseudomode-Based Variational Approach with the Multiple Davydov D1 Density Operator

Yiying Yan, Zhiguo LÜ, Yuguo Su +2 more

The pseudomode framework provides an efficient description of open quantum systems in non-Markovian and nonperturbative coupling regimes by utilizing simple Markovian Lindblad master equations that incorporate a set of damped bosonic pseudomodes. Developing an efficient numerical scheme to solve these equations accurately is highly desirable. In this work, we propose a modified multiple Davydov D1 density operator ansatz and combine it with the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational principle to simulate the dynamics governed by these master equations. We apply this variational method to the spin-boson model, both with and without a periodic external driving field, and compute both single- and two-time expectation values in non-Markovian, strong-coupling regimes. The accuracy of our variational approach is validated by comparing its predictions with results obtained from the small matrix path integral method. We demonstrate that the variational and path-integral approaches are in excellent agreement for both single- and two-time expectations across nondriven and driven cases, spanning both low- and high-temperature regimes. Our results establish the reliability and broad applicability of the pseudomode-based variational approach for calculating two-time correlation functions in open quantum systems.

Variational Dynamics of Open Quantum Spin Systems in Phase Space

Jacopo Tosca, Zejian Li, Francesco Carnazza +1 more

We introduce a variational method for simulating the dynamics of interacting open quantum spin systems. The method is based on the spin phase-space representation and variationally targets the Husimi-$Q$ function with an ansatz based on a multi-dimensional mixture of spin-coherent states. Crucially, the mixture coefficients are allowed to take negative values, enabling the faithful capture of quantum correlations beyond semiclassical descriptions. The resulting equations of motion are derived from the Dirac-Frenkel variational principle and can be evaluated efficiently without resorting to Monte Carlo sampling by exploiting the analytical structure of the ansatz. As a first application, we demonstrate that this approach accurately captures both the full quantum dynamics and the non-equilibrium steady states of the transverse-field quantum Ising model, in excellent agreement with exact diagonalization. Furthermore, we show that the method scales efficiently to large two-dimensional lattices, a regime that remains challenging for other techniques.
