Abstract

With the ever-growing concern for internet security, the field of quantum cryptography emerges as a promising solution for enhancing the security of networking systems. In this paper, 20 notable papers from leading conferences and journals are reviewed and categorized based on their focus on various aspects of quantum cryptography, including key distribution, quantum bit commitment, post-quantum cryptography, and counterfactual quantum key distribution. The paper explores the motivations and challenges of employing quantum cryptography, addressing security and privacy concerns along with existing solutions. Secure key distribution, a critical component in ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of transmitted information over a network, is emphasized in the discussion. The survey examines the potential of quantum cryptography to enable secure key exchange between parties, even when faced with eavesdropping, and other applications of quantum cryptography. Additionally, the paper analyzes the methodologies, findings, and limitations of each reviewed study, pinpointing trends such as the increasing focus on practical implementation of quantum cryptography protocols and the growing interest in post-quantum cryptography research. Furthermore, the survey identifies challenges and open research questions, including the need for more efficient quantum repeater networks, improved security proofs for continuous variable quantum key distribution, and the development of quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms, showing future directions for the field of quantum cryptography.

Quantum Cryptography – Principles, Protocols, and Future Directions: A Review

Dian Arif Rachman, Muhamad Akrom, Didik Hermanto +4 more

The rapid advancement of quantum computing poses a significant threat to classical cryptographic systems that rely on the computational hardness of mathematical problems such as integer factorization and discrete logarithm problems. In this context, quantum cryptography has emerged as a promising paradigm for secure communication based on the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics rather than on computational assumptions. This paper presents a comprehensive review of quantum cryptography, with a particular focus on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), the most mature application. The study discusses the theoretical foundations of quantum security, including superposition, entanglement, and the No-cloning theorem, which collectively enable eavesdropping detection and guarantee information-theoretic security. Furthermore, the review examines major QKD protocols, such as BB84 and E91, as well as their advanced variants designed to address practical vulnerabilities and enhance performance. Recent progress in real-world implementations, including fiber-optic networks, free-space communication, and satellite-based systems such as the Micius satellite, is also analyzed. In addition, the paper highlights critical challenges related to scalability, hardware limitations, and security loopholes arising from imperfect devices. Finally, emerging research directions, including hybrid cryptographic frameworks that integrate quantum and post-quantum approaches, are discussed to provide insights into the future of secure communication. This review aims to provide a structured, up-to-date understanding of quantum cryptography, bridging the gap between theoretical developments and practical implementations, and emphasizing its crucial role in shaping next-generation cybersecurity systems.

Enhancing Network Security with Quantum Cryptography:A Study on Future-Proofing Computer Networks AgainstQuantum Attacks

Ruli Supriati, Purwanti Purwanti, Sheila Aulia Anjani +2 more

The rapid development of quantum computing presents a significant challenge to existing cryptographic systems, such as RSA and Elliptic Curve Cryptography, which rely on the complexity of mathematical problems for security. Shor’s algorithm, which can efficiently solve these problems, emphasizes the need for cryptographic solutions that are resistant to quantum threats. This study aims to investigate the potential of Quantum Cryptography, with a specific focus on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), to strengthen network security in response to emerging quantum computing risks. Despite the theoretical potential of QKD, there remains a gap in its practical application, particularly in terms of scalability, high implementation costs, and sensitivity to environmental factors, which have hindered its widespread adoption. The novelty of this research lies in the comprehensive approach it takes, combining theoretical analysis of QKD protocols, simulations using Qiskit, and comparisons with traditional cryptographic methods. This provides a more robust understanding of QKD effectiveness in different network scenarios. The study reveals that the BB84 protocol consistently outperforms the E91 protocol in terms of key generation efficiency and noise resilience. However, despite its unmatched security capabilities, QKD faces challenges such as scalability and implementation costs. To overcome these challenges and achieve widespread adoption, integrating QKD with post quantum cryptography and developing hybrid approaches are essential. Quantum Cryptography, particularly QKD, holds the potential to become a cornerstone for securing critical infrastructure, ensuring communication security in the quantum era.
