Abstract

We study the motion of a heavy impurity immersed in a weakly interacting BEC using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPe). We construct a perturbative solution to the GPe in powers of impurity velocity in the case when the boson-impurity potential is tuned to unitarity and calculate the effective mass of the polaron. In addition, we calculate the interaction energy of two unitary polarons which are sufficiently far apart. Our formalism also reproduces the results for both the mass and interaction energy obtained at weak boson-impurity coupling.

Exact results for heavy unitary Bose polarons

Nikolay Yegovtsev, G. E. Astrakharchik, Pietro Massignan +1 more

We consider the problem of unitary Bose polarons, i.e., impurities interacting via a potential with infinite scattering length with a bath of weakly interacting bosons. We provide an analytic expression for the energy of a heavy impurity whose interaction potential has a range larger than the healing length of the bath. Furthermore, we perform numerically exact diffusion Monte Carlo calculations and we demonstrate that the simple Gross-Pitaevskii theory provides a remarkably accurate description of heavy unitary Bose polarons throughout the whole experimentally relevant range of gas densities.

Effective mass and interaction energy of heavy Bose polarons at unitarity

Nikolay Yegovtsev, Victor Gurarie

The authors study the effective mass of a heavy impurity moving through a Bose-Einstein condensate, and the condensate-induced attraction between two such impurities in the regime of strong boson-impurity interactions. This problem turns out to be analytically solvable in the regime of small gas densities.

Universal Aspects of a Strongly Interacting Impurity in a Dilute Bose Condensate

Pietro Massignan, Nikolay Yegovtsev, Victor Gurarie

We study the properties of an impurity immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas, i.e., of a Bose polaron. In the perturbatively tractable limit of weak impurity-boson interactions many of its properties are known to depend only on the scattering length. Here we demonstrate that for strong (unitary) impurity-boson interactions all quasiparticle properties of a heavy Bose polaron, such as its energy, its residue, its Tan's contact, and the number of bosons trapped nearby the impurity, depend on the impurity-boson potential via a single parameter characterizing its range.

Analytical study of a finite-range impurity in a one-dimensional Bose gas

Taha Alper Yogurt, Matthew T. Eiles

One-dimensional Bose gases present an interesting setting to study the physics of Bose polarons, as density fluctuations play an enhanced role due to reduced dimensionality. Theoretical descriptions of this system have predominantly relied on contact pseudopotentials to model the impurity-bath interaction, leading to unphysical results in the strongly coupled limit. In this work, we analytically solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, using a square-well potential instead of a zero-range potential, for the ground-state wave function of a static impurity. We compute perturbative corrections arising from infinitesimally slow impurity motion. The polaron energy and effective mass remain finite in the strongly coupled regime, in contrast to the divergent behavior obtained using a contact potential. In this limit, we characterize the polaron properties in terms of the dimensionless ratio w ̃ ≡ w / ξ between the interaction range w of the impurity-bath potential and the coherence length ξ of the Bose gas. The effective mass exhibits a 1 / w ̃ scaling. The energy of the attractive polaron scales as − 1 / w ̃ 3 , whereas the repulsive polaron features subleading corrections to the dark soliton energy at the order w ̃ 3 .

Asymptotic Freedom of Two Heavy Impurities in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Dong-Chen Zheng, Wen, Lin, Renyuan Liao

We consider two heavy impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate, and calculate the self-energy using the Wilsonian renormalization. The polaron energy, quasiparticle residue and damping rate are extracted from the self-energy. We demonstrate that various effective potentials emerge from the polaron energy under the specific conditions. In the limit of large separation between the impurities, the polaron spectrum converges to the results for a single impurity, exhibiting an attractive-repulsive crossover across the Feshbach resonance. The boundary of this crossover is identified through the analysis of the damping rate. We highlight that repulsive-dominant polarons can exist as long as the impurities are sufficiently close, even when the impurity-boson interactions are attractive. Additionally, we observe that the two impurities become asymptotically free in the repulsive polaron regime. These results are verifiable and offer a fresh perspective on the interaction dynamics between two polarons.

POLARONS IN SPINOR BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATES

Yucong YIN, Boyang LIU

This study investigates the polaron states formed by an impurity immersed in a spin-1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. Employing the Fröhlich Hamiltonian framework, we systematically calculated the ground-state energy and effective mass of polarons in both weak-coupling and strong-coupling regimes. For the weakly interacting regime, the analysis was conducted using second-order perturbation theory. In the strong-coupling regime, we constructed an analytical approximation for the polaron states and performed variational calculations to determine their energy and effective mass. Furthermore, we discussed the transition from the mobile state to the self-trapped state of the polaron in the strong-coupling region. We also estimate the signatures of polaron effects in spinor BEC for the future experiments.
