Abstract

Advances in hybrid fractional quantum Hall (FQH)-superconductor platforms pave the way for realisation of parafermionic modes. We analyse signatures of these non-abelian anyons in transport measurements across devices with \mathbb{Z}_6 ℤ 6 parafermions (PFs) coupled to an external electrode. Simulating the dynamics of these open systems by a stochastic quantum jump method, we show that a current readout over sufficiently long times constitutes a projective measurement of the fractional charge shared by two PFs. Interaction of these topological modes with the FQH environment, however, may cause poisoning events affecting this degree of freedom which we model by jump operators that describe incoherent coupling of PFs with FQH edge modes. We analyse how this gives rise to a characteristic three-level telegraph noise in the current, constituting a very strong signature of PFs. We discuss also other forms of poisoning and noise caused by interaction with fractional quasiparticles in the bulk of the Hall system. We conclude our work with an analysis of four-PF devices, in particular on how the PF fusion algebra can be observed in electrical transport experiments.

Interferometric Signatures of Zero Modes in Fractional Quantum Hall-Superconductor Heterostructures

Junyi Cao, Ramanjit Sohal, Angela Kou +1 more

Fractional quantum Hall-superconductor (FQH-SC) heterostructures are predicted to host defect-bound parafermion zero modes (PZMs). We propose two related configurations to probe their fusion structure. In a Josephson junction coupled to a single quantum point contact (QPC), quasiparticle tunneling switches the defect fusion channel, producing stochastic transitions between branches of the fractional Josephson spectrum. Embedding the junction in a two-QPC Fabry-Pérot interferometer provides a complementary probe. Weak zero mode tunneling produces fusion-channel-dependent interference while strong tunneling makes the interferometer probe a superposition of fusion channels and strongly suppresses the signal: in the topological limit it vanishes exactly, revealing the defects' non-Abelian nature even when the parent FQH state is Abelian.

Anomalous periodicity and parafermion hybridization in superconducting qubits

Alessio Calzona, Matteo Carrega, Luca Chirolli

Topological quantum computation relies on a protected degenerate subspace enabling complicated operations in a noise-resilient way. To this end, hybrid platforms based on non-Abelian quasiparticles such as parafermions hold great promise. These are predicted to emerge at the interface between fractional quantum Hall states and superconductors and therefore naturally couple to superconducting qubits. Here, we study a parafermionic fluxonium circuit and show that the presence of topological states yields a striking periodicity in the qubit spectrum. In addition, peculiar and marked signatures of different parafermion coupling, associated with multiple tunneling of fractional quasiparticles, can be detected in the qubit microwave spectrum. Finite parafermion coupling can reduce the full degeneracy of the non-Abelian manifold, and we show that this configuration can be used to assess the remaining degree of protection of the system.

Numerical Observation of Parafermion Zero Modes and their Stability in 2D Topological States

Mohammad-Sadegh Vaezi, Abolhassan Vaezi

The possibility of realizing non-Abelian excitations (non-Abelions) in two-dimensional (2D) Abelian states of matter has generated a lot of interest recently. A well-known example of such non-Abelions are parafermion zeros modes (PFZMs) which can be realized at the endpoints of the so called genons in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states or fractional Chern insulators (FCIs). In this letter, we discuss some known signatures of PFZMs and also introduce some novel ones. In particular, we show that the topological entanglement entropy (TEE) shifts by a quantized value after crossing PFZMs. Utilizing those signatures, we present the first large scale numerical study of PFZMs and their stability against perturbations in both FQH states and FCIs within the density-Matrix-Renormalization-Group (DMRG) framework. Our results can help build a closer connection with future experiments on FQH states with genons.

Zero Mode Operators and Charge-Conjugation Defects in Non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall-Superconductor Heterostructures

Junyi Cao, Eduardo Fradkin

We study zero modes bound to charge-conjugation defects in fractional quantum Hall-superconductor (FQH-SC) heterostructures built from Abelian and non-Abelian FQH states. Although the associated defects are well described by $G$-crossed braided tensor categories, a local operator description of their zero modes is not generally known. We generalize the bulk-to-boundary construction of localized zero mode operators to FQH-SCs with non-Abelian parent topological orders, mapping bulk Wilson operators in the folded theory to localized zero mode operators in the one-dimensional FQH-SC theory. This construction distinguishes zero mode anyons from the local zero mode operators that act on the defect Hilbert space and yields a generalized zero mode algebra. It also determines the fusion-channel dependence of tunneling: tunneling of zero mode operators probes bulk monodromy, while direct zero mode anyon transfer probes $G$-crossed associativity data. Applying this framework, we recover the $\mathbb{Z}_{2m}$ parafermion zero mode structure of fermionic Laughlin FQH-SCs at filling $ν=1/m$, obtain a $\mathbb{Z}_2^{(n)}\times\mathbb{Z}_N$ structure for generalized Moore-Read states at filling $ν=1/m$, with $N=2m$ for fermionic states and $N=m$ for bosonic states, and find a $\mathrm{Fib}\times\mathbb{Z}_N$ structure for the $k=3$ Read-Rezayi state at filling $ν=3/(3M+2)$, with $N=2(3M+2)$ for fermionic states and $N=(3M+2)/2$ for bosonic states. In the Read-Rezayi case, zero mode operator tunneling and direct zero mode anyon transfer yield distinct universal amplitude ratios between the neutral fusion channels, providing a characteristic signature of the underlying Fibonacci defect structure.

Dynamical and statistical properties of anyons in fractional quantum hall effect

Quang Trung Ha

The quantum Hall effect has been the prototypical example for many emerging fields of Physics, including the study of topological phases of matter, topological order, and topological insulators. The objects of interest in this thesis are anyons, which are elementary excitations in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluids. Anyons are quasiparticles with fractional charge and fractional statistics. The latter prop- erty makes it a subject of immense interest due to application in fault-tolerant quantum computing. Here, we employ a perspective that anyons are the appro- priate degree of freedom to describe the relevant physics of FQH systems. This is because when a topological phase is assumed and the energy gap goes to infinity, anyons (“quasiholes”) are the only possible elementary excitations, since they are not energetically punished by the correspondng model Hamiltonian. With respect to a realistic Hamiltonian, however, this choice of degree of freedom depends on the exact effective interaction in the system. For example, while the Laughlin state is the model state at filling factor n + 1/3 (where n is some integer), when the effective electron-electron interaction is more long-ranged, the quasiholes of a Gaffnian state may be excited and become the better degree of freedom to describe physics in the same filling factor. This perspective results in a surprising observa- tion that a Laughlin quasihole may fractionalize under certain conditions, leading to a quasiparticle of charge e/6 that can potentially be detected in experiments. Another important aspect of anyons is their intrinsic spin and the corresponding spin-statistics relation, which must account for the fact that FQH anyons are not point particles, but objects with finite sizes and intricate internal structures. Our investigation leads to a rigorous derivation of the general spin-statistics relation for anyons in Abelian FQH phases. Furthermore, we show it is possible to fully capture the important features of the statistics by a conformal Hilbert space (CHS) description. Our analysis provides the necessary tools to study such geometric effects, which we use to investigate how disorder in a realistic system may affect different experimental schemes for measuring anyon statistics.

Parafermionic Zero Modes in Ultracold Bosonic Systems

Mohammad F. Maghrebi, Sriram Ganeshan, D. J. Clarke +2 more

Exotic topologically protected zero modes with parafermionic statistics (also called fractionalized Majorana modes) have been proposed to emerge in devices fabricated from a fractional quantum Hall system and a superconductor. The fractionalized statistics of these modes takes them an important step beyond the simplest non-Abelian anyons, Majorana fermions. Building on recent advances towards the realization of fractional quantum Hall states of bosonic ultracold atoms, we propose a realization of parafermions in a system consisting of Bose-Einstein-condensate trenches within a bosonic fractional quantum Hall state. We show that parafermionic zero modes emerge at the end points of the trenches and give rise to a topologically protected degeneracy. We also discuss methods for preparing and detecting these modes.
