Abstract

We grow the web of dualities for conformal field theories (CFTs) in 2+1 spacetime dimensions to include quantum critical transitions of Dirac fermions. Our construction uses the seed duality, equating a free Dirac fermion with a complex boson coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field, to express various Gross-Neveu-Yukawa (GNY) critical points of N fermions in terms of the same number of complex bosons and partner gauge fields. In some instances, monopole operators appear explicitly in the dual action, such as for the superconducting transition of a single Dirac fermion, which is a CFT with emergent supersymmetry. We match phase diagrams, symmetries and their anomalies. By further gauging certain symmetries, we derive offspring dualities. For example, starting with the duality for the regular GNY transition of 2 Dirac fermions, we arrive at the duality between a Neel-to-VBS deconfined quantum critical point and a gauged-Gross-Neveu transition. Finally, we use a large-N expansion for monopole operators, and compare with known scaling dimensions in the simplest single-flavour GNY transition.

Evidence for web of dualities from monopole operators

Shai M. Chester, Éric Dupuis, William Witczak‐Krempa

We give evidence for the web of 3d bosonization dualities in conformal field theories (CFTs) by computing monopole operator scaling dimensions in ($2+1$)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED3) with Chern-Simons level $k$ and $N$ complex bosons in a large-$N$, $k$ expansion. We first consider the $k=0$ case, where we show that scaling dimensions previously computed to subleading order in $1/N$ can be extrapolated to $N=1$ and matched to $O(2)$ Wilson-Fisher CFT scaling dimensions with around 5% error, which is evidence for particle-vortex duality. We then generalize the subleading calculation to large $N$, $k$ and fixed $k/N$, extrapolate to $N=k=1$, and consider monopole operators that are conjectured to be dual to nondegenerate scalar operators in a theory of a single Dirac fermion. We find matches typically with 1% error or less, which is strong evidence of this so-called ``seed'' duality that implies a web of 3d bosonization dualities among CFTs.

Deconfined criticality in the QED3 Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model: The 1/N expansion revisited

Rufus Boyack, Ahmed Rayyan, Joseph Maciejko

The critical properties of the ${\mathrm{QED}}_{3}$ Gross-Neveu-Yukawa (GNY) model in 2 + 1 dimensions with $N$ flavors of two-component Dirac fermions are computed to first order in the $1/N$ expansion. For the specific case of $N=2$, the critical point is conjectured to be dual to the N\'eel-to-valence-bond-solid (VBS) deconfined critical point of quantum antiferromagnets on the square lattice. It is found that Aslamazov-Larkin diagrams, missed by previous $\ensuremath{\epsilon}$- and $1/N$-expansion studies with four-component fermions, give important contributions to the scaling dimensions of various operators. With the inclusion of these diagrams, the resummed scaling dimensions of the adjoint fermion bilinear and scalar field at the ${\mathrm{QED}}_{3}$ GNY critical point are in reasonable agreement with numerical studies of the N\'eel-to-VBS transition, in support of the duality conjecture.

Self-duality protected multicriticality in deconfined quantum phase transitions

Da-Chuan Lu, Cenke Xu, Yi‐Zhuang You

Duality places an important constraint on the renormalization group flows and the phase diagrams. For self-dual theories, the self-duality can be promoted as a symmetry, this leads to the multicriticalities. This work investigates a description of the deconfined quantum criticality, the ${N}_{f}=2\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathrm{QED}}_{3}$, as an example of self-dual theories, and its multicritical behavior under perturbative deformations. The multicriticality is described by the theory with Gross-Neveu couplings and falls in a different universality class than the standard deconfined quantum criticality. We systematically calculate the scaling dimensions of various operators in the 3D quantum electrodynamics with the Chern-Simons term and Gross-Neveu couplings by the large-$N$ renormalization group analysis. Specifically, we find certain Drelativistic four-fermion interactions which correspond to the dimer-dimer interactions in the lattice model will drive the deconfined quantum criticality to the first-order transition, this result is consistent with previous numerical studies.

Critical behavior of the QED3 -Gross-Neveu model: Duality and deconfined criticality

Lukas Janssen, Yin-Chen He

We study the critical properties of the ${\mathrm{QED}}_{3}$-Gross-Neveu model with $2N$ flavors of two-component Dirac fermions coupled to a massless scalar field and a U(1) gauge field. For $N=1$, this theory has recently been suggested to be dual to the SU(2) noncompact ${\mathrm{CP}}^{1}$ model that describes the deconfined phase transition between the N\'eel antiferromagnet and the valence bond solid on the square lattice. For $N=2$, the theory has been proposed as an effective description of a deconfined critical point between chiral and Dirac spin liquid phases, and may potentially be realizable in spin-$1/2$ systems on the kagome lattice. We demonstrate the existence of a stable quantum critical point in the ${\mathrm{QED}}_{3}$-Gross-Neveu model for all values of $N$. This quantum critical point is shown to escape the notorious fixed-point annihilation mechanism that renders plain ${\mathrm{QED}}_{3}$ (without scalar-field coupling) unstable at low values of $N$. The theory exhibits an upper critical space-time dimension of four, enabling us to access the critical behavior in a controlled expansion in the small parameter $\ensuremath{\epsilon}=4\ensuremath{-}D$. We compute the scalar-field anomalous dimension ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\ensuremath{\phi}}$, the correlation-length exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}$, as well as the scaling dimension of the flavor-symmetry-breaking bilinear $\overline{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{z}\ensuremath{\psi}$ at the critical point, and compare our leading-order estimates with predictions of the conjectured duality.

Wilson-Fisher fixed points in the presence of Dirac fermions

Igor F. Herbut

Wilson–Fisher expansion near upper critical dimension has proven to be an invaluable conceptual and computational tool in our understanding of the universal critical behavior in the [Formula: see text] field theories that describe low-energy physics of the canonical models, such as Ising, XY, and Heisenberg. Here, I review its application to a class of the Gross–Neveu–Yukawa (GNY) field theories, which emerge as possible universal description of a number of quantum phase transitions in electronic two-dimensional systems such as graphene and d-wave superconductors. GNY field theories may be viewed as minimal modifications of the [Formula: see text] field theories in which the order parameter is coupled to relativistic Dirac fermions through Yukawa term and which still exhibit critical fixed points in the suitably formulated Wilson–Fisher [Formula: see text]-expansion. I discuss the unified GNY field theory for a set of different symmetry-breaking patterns, with focus on the semimetal-Néel-ordered-Mott insulator quantum phase transition in the half-filled Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice, for which a comparison between the state-of-the-art [Formula: see text]-expansion, quantum Monte Carlo, large N, and functional renormalization-group calculations can be made.

Anomalous Dimensions of Monopole Operators at the Transitions between Dirac and Topological Spin Liquids

Éric Dupuis, Rufus Boyack, William Witczak‐Krempa

Monopole operators are studied in a large family of quantum critical points between Dirac spin liquids and topological quantum spin liquids (QSLs): chiral and Z 2 QSLs.These quantum phase transitions are described by conformal field theories (CFTs): quantum electrodynamics in 2 þ 1 dimensions with 2N flavors of two-component massless Dirac fermions and a four-fermion interaction term. For the transition to a chiral spin liquid, it is the Gross-Neveu interaction (QED 3 -GN), while for the transitions to Z 2 QSLs, it is a superconducting pairing term with general spin and valley structure (generalized QED 3 -Z 2 GN).Using the state-operator correspondence, we obtain monopole scaling dimensions to subleading order in 1=N.For monopoles with a minimal topological charge q ¼ 1=2, the scaling dimension is 2N × 0.26510 at leading order, with the quantum correction being 0.118911(7) for the chiral spin liquid, and 0.102846(9) for the simplest Z 2 case (the expression is also given for a general pairing term).Although these two anomalous dimensions are nearly equal, the underlying quantum fluctuations possess distinct origins. The analogous result in QED 3 is also obtained, and we find a subleading contribution of -0.038138ð5Þ, which is slightly different from the value -0.0383 first obtained in the literature. The scaling dimension of a QED 3 -GN monopole with minimal charge is very close to the scaling dimensions of other operators predicted to be equal by a conjectured duality between QED 3 -GN with 2N ¼ 2 flavors and the CP 1 model.Additionally, nonminimally charged monopoles with equal charges on both sides of the duality have similar scaling dimensions.By studying the large-q asymptotics of the scaling dimensions in QED 3 , QED 3 -GN, and QED 3 -Z 2 GN, we verify that the constant Oðq 0 Þ coefficient precisely matches the universal nonperturbative prediction for CFTs with a global U(1) symmetry. Finally, we identify numerous open questions regarding the fate of monopoles and their hierarchies at transitions to spin liquids and ordered phases.
