Phase space ensembles for classical and quantum-classical systems

Abstract

We develop a so-called theory of ensembles in phase space and use it to investigate the construction of a quantum-classical hybrid theory. We use Galilei covariance and the Lie algebra of the Galilei group as a guide to constructing the hybrid model presented here. In particular, we chose the interaction term between the classical and the quantum sector so that the equations are Galilei covariant. Our approach points out a possible connection between two previously unrelated hybrid systems.

Galilean covariance of quantum-classical hybrid systems of the Sudarshan type

A. D. Bermúdez Manjarres, Nathaly Marín–Medina

We revisit quantum-classical hybrid systems of the Sudarshan type under the light of Galilean covariance. We show that these kinds of hybrids cannot be given as a unitary representation of the Galilei group and at the same time conserve the total linear momentum unless the interaction term only depends on the relative canonical velocities.

Statistical ensembles in the Hamiltonian formulation of hybrid quantum-classical systems

Nikola Burić, Istok P. Mendaš, Duska B Popovic +2 more

General statistical ensembles in the Hamiltonian formulation of hybrid quantum-classical systems are analyzed. It is argued that arbitrary probability densities on the hybrid phase space must be considered as the class of possible physically distinguishable statistical ensembles of hybrid systems. Nevertheless, statistical operators associated with the hybrid system and with the quantum subsystem can be consistently defined. Dynamical equations for the statistical operators representing the mixed states of the hybrid system and its quantum subsystem are derived and analyzed. In particular, these equations irreducibly depend on the total probability density on the hybrid phase space.

The group structure of dynamical transformations between quantum reference frames

Angel Ballesteros, Flaminia Giacomini, Giulia Gubitosi

Recently, it was shown that when reference frames are associated to quantum systems, the transformation laws between such quantum reference frames need to be modified to take into account the quantum and dynamical features of the reference frames. This led to a relational description of the phase space variables of the quantum system of which the quantum reference frames are part of. While such transformations were shown to be symmetries of the system's Hamiltonian, the question remained unanswered as to whether they enjoy a group structure, similar to that of the Galilei group relating classical reference frames in quantum mechanics. In this work, we identify the canonical transformations on the phase space of the quantum systems comprising the quantum reference frames, and show that these transformations close a group structure defined by a Lie algebra, which is different from the usual Galilei algebra of quantum mechanics. We further find that the elements of this new algebra are in fact the building blocks of the quantum reference frames transformations previously identified, which we recover. Finally, we show how the transformations between classical reference frames described by the standard Galilei group symmetries can be obtained from the group of transformations between quantum reference frames by taking the zero limit of the parameter that governs the additional noncommutativity introduced by the quantum nature of inertial transformations.

A quantum-classical theory with nonlinear and stochastic dynamics

Nikola Burić, Duska B Popovic, Milan Radonjić +1 more

The method of constrained dynamical systems on the quantum-classical phase space is utilized to develop a theory of quantum-classical hybrid systems. Effects of the classical degrees of freedom on the quantum part are modeled using an appropriate constraint, and the interaction also includes the effects of neglected degrees of freedom. Dynamical law of the theory is given in terms of nonlinear stochastic differential equations with Hamiltonian and gradient terms. The theory provides a successful dynamical description of the collapse during quantum measurement.

Markovian dynamics for a quantum/classical system and quantum trajectories

Alberto Barchielli

Abstract Quantum trajectory techniques have been used in the theory of open systems as a starting point for numerical computations and to describe the monitoring of a quantum system in continuous time. We extend this technique to develop a general approach to the dynamics of quantum/classical hybrid systems. By using two coupled stochastic differential equations, we can describe a classical component and a quantum one which have their own intrinsic dynamics and which interact with each other. A mathematically rigorous construction is given, under the restriction of having a Markovian joint dynamics and of involving only bounded operators on the Hilbert space of the quantum component. An important feature is that, if the interaction allows for a flow of information from the quantum component to the classical one, necessarily the dynamics is dissipative. We show also how this theory is connected to a suitable hybrid dynamical semigroup, which reduces to a quantum dynamical semigroup in the purely quantum case and includes Liouville and Kolmogorov–Fokker–Planck equations in the purely classical case. Moreover, this semigroup allows to compare the proposed stochastic dynamics with various other proposals based on hybrid master equations. Some simple examples are constructed in order to show the variety of physical behaviors which can be described; in particular, a model presenting hidden entanglement is introduced.

Hybrid Koopman C ∗ –formalism and the hybrid quantum–classical master equation *

Carlos Bouthelier-Madre, Jesús Clemente-Gallardo, L González-Bravo +1 more

Abstract Based on Koopman formalism for classical statistical mechanics, we propose a formalism to define hybrid quantum–classical dynamical systems by defining (outer) automorphisms of the C ∗ algebra of hybrid operators and realizing them as linear transformations on the space of hybrid states. These hybrid states are represented as density matrices on the Hilbert space obtained from the hybrid C ∗ –algebra by the GNS construction. We also classify all possible dynamical systems which are unitary and obtain the possible hybrid Hamiltonian operators.
