Abstract

The properties of stable Luttinger liquid phases in models with a nonconserved number of particles are investigated. We study the Luttinger liquid phases in one-dimensional models of hard-core boson and spinless fermion chains where particles can be created and annihilated three by three on adjacent sites. We provide an intuitive and systematic method based on the flow equation approach, which accounts for additional terms in the correlations generated by the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$-symmetric interactions. We find that despite the emergence of U(1) symmetry under renormalization, the observables are still affected by its breaking in the bare Hamiltonian. In particular, the standard bosonization mapping becomes insufficient to capture the full behavior of correlation functions.

Stable Luttinger liquids and emergent $U(1)$ symmetry in constrained quantum chains

Ruben Verresen, Ashvin Vishwanath, Frank Pollmann

We explore the effect of local constraints on one-dimensional bosonic and fermionic ground state phases. Motivated by recent experiments on Rydberg chains, we constrain the occupation of neighboring sites in known phases of matter. Starting from Kitaev's topological superconductor wire, we find that a soft constraint induces a stable gapless Luttinger liquid phase. While Luttinger and Fermi liquids are usually unstable to superconducting proximity effects, the constraint suppresses pair creations, allowing for an emergent $U(1)$ symmetry and gaplessness. We substantiate this intuitive picture using field theoretical and Bethe ansatz methods. In particular, in the hard constraint limit, the model is explicitly $U(1)$-symmetric and integrable. For the corresponding spin-$1/2$ chains related by a Jordan-Wigner transformation, the Luttinger liquid is stabilized by the $\mathbb Z_2$ spin flip symmetry. Longer-range constraints stabilize gapless phases even without $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry, connecting to the seminal work by Fendley, Sengupta and Sachdev [Physical Review B 69, 075106 (2004)], clarifying how the gapless floating phase observed therein can be vastly extended.

Origin of nonsymmorphic bosonization formulas in generalized antiferromagnetic Kitaev spin- 12 chains from a renormalization-group perspective

Wang Yang, Chao Xu, Alberto Nocera +1 more

Recently, in the Luttinger liquid phase of the one-dimensional generalized antiferromagnetic Kitaev spin-1/2 model, it has been found that the Abelian bosonization formulas of the local spin operators only respect the exact discrete nonsymmorphic symmetry group of the model, not the emergent U(1) symmetry. In this work, we perform a renormalization group (RG) study to provide explanations for the origin of the U(1) breaking terms in the bosonization formulas. We find that the lack of U(1) symmetry originates from the wave-function renormalization effects in the spin operators along the RG flow induced by the U(1) breaking interactions in the microscopic Hamiltonian. In addition, the RG analysis can give predictions to the signs and order of magnitudes of the coefficients in the bosonization formulas. Our work is helping to understand the rich nonsymmorphic physics in one-dimensional Kitaev spin models.

Nonsymmorphic Luttinger liquids in generalized antiferromagnetic Kitaev spin- 12 chains

Wang Yang, Chao Xu, Shenglong Xu +2 more

We perform a detailed study on the consequences of the nonsymmorphic symmetries in the Luttinger phase of the one-dimensional (1D) spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model with an antiferromagnetic Kitaev interaction. Although the low-energy Hamiltonian has an emergent U(1) symmetry, the bosonization formulas for the spin operators contain ten nonuniversal coefficients which only respect the discrete nonsymmorphic symmetries and can be determined by our density matrix renormalization group simulations to a high degree of accuracy. Using the nonsymmorphic bosonization formulas, the response to weak magnetic field is analyzed, and the zigzag phase in the 2D Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model is recovered by weakly coupling an infinite number of 1D chains. Furthermore, we find a line of critical points with an emergent $\mathrm{SU}{(2)}_{1}$ conformal symmetry located on the boundary of the Luttinger liquid phase. Our work reveals the rich physics related to nonsymmorphic symmetries in strongly correlated quantum magnetic models, and demonstrates the usefulness of 1D analysis for understanding the 2D Kitaev physics.

One-dimensional strongly interacting Luttinger liquid of lattice spinless fermions

I. N Karnaukhov, A. A Ovchinnikov

We consider the spinless fermion model with hard-core repulsive potential between particles extended on a few lattice sites δ. The Luttinger-liquid behavior is studied for different values of a hard-core radius. We derive a critical exponent Θ of the one-particle correlation function ⟨ c i † c j ⟩ for an arbitrary electron density and coupling constant. Our results show that at high density the behavior of fermions can be described as a strongly interacting Luttinger liquid with Θ > 1. As a result, the residual Fermi surface disappears.

We consider the spinless fermion model with hard-core repulsive potential between particles extended on a few lattice sites delta. The Luttinger-liquid behavior is studied for different values of a hard-core radius. We derive a critical exponent Theta of the one-particle correlation function [c(i)(dagger)c(j)] for an arbitrary electron density and coupling constant. Our results show that at high density the behavior of fermions can be described as a strongly interacting Luttinger liquid with Phi > 1. As a result, the residual Fermi surface disappears.

Quantum-critical electrodynamics of Luttinger fermions

Santanu Dey, Joseph Maciejko

We study the quantum electrodynamics of Luttinger fermions with quadratic band-crossing dispersion in three dimensions. The model can be viewed as the low-energy effective theory of a putative U(1) quantum spin liquid with fermionic Luttinger spinons, or as an extension of the Luttinger-Abrikosov-Beneslavskii (LAB) model that accounts for transverse gauge fluctuations with finite photon velocity. Aided by a renormalization group analysis below four dimensions, we elucidate the presence and stability of quantum critical phenomena in this model. We find that the non-Fermi liquid LAB phase is stable against gauge fluctuations and can thus also be viewed as a U(1) spin liquid with gapless Luttinger spinons. We discover a multicritical point with Lifshitz scaling that corresponds to a time-reversal symmetry-breaking quantum phase transition from the LAB state to a chiral spin liquid with spinon Landau levels and birefringent emergent photons. This multicritical point is characterized by a finite fermion-photon coupling in the infrared and can be viewed as a fermionic analog of the Rokhsar-Kivelson point in three-dimensional quantum dimer models.
