Abstract

In this paper, we consider the local unitary classification of the class of qudit bipartite mixed states for which no information can be obtained locally. These states are represented by symmetrical density matrices in which both tracial states are maximally mixed. Interestingly, this symmetry facilitates the local unitary classification of two-qubit states. However, the same formalism fails in the case of systems of higher dimensions. We consider a broader set of states by introducing a family of qudit bipartite mixed states with maximally mixed marginals. For this family of states, we determine several constants which are in variant under local unitary transformations so can be used for entanglement classification. Finally, we consider the two-qutrit case and in particular, a two-parameter family of states for which the local unitary classification is complete. We relate this classification to known entanglement measures such as purity and negativity.

Bounds on the entanglement of two-qutrit systems from fixed marginals

Giuseppe Baio, Dariusz Chruściński, Paweł Horodecki +2 more

We discuss the problem of characterizing upper bounds on entanglement in a bipartite quantum system when only the reduced density matrices (marginals) are known. In particular, starting from the known two-qubit case, we propose a family of candidates for maximally entangled mixed states with respect to fixed marginals for two qutrits. These states are extremal in the convex set of two-qutrit states with fixed marginals. Moreover, it is shown that they are always quasidistillable. As a by-product we prove that any maximally correlated state that is quasidistillable must be pure. Our observations for two qutrits are supported by numerical analysis.

Maximally entangled mixed states of two qubits

Frank Verstraete, Koenraad M. R. Audenaert, Bart De Moor

We consider mixed states of two qubits and show under which global unitary operations their entanglement is maximized. This leads to a class of states that is a generalization of the Bell states. Three measures of entanglement are considered: entanglement of formation, negativity, and relative entropy of entanglement. Surprisingly all states that maximize one measure also maximize the others. We give a complete characterization of these generalized Bell states and prove that these states for fixed eigenvalues are all equivalent under local unitary transformations. Furthermore we characterize all nearly entangled states closest to the maximally mixed state and derive a lower bound on the volume of separable mixed states.

Bargmann Invariants Are Insufficient for Complete Local-Unitary Orbit Discrimination

Lin Zhang, Bing Xie

Bargmann invariants constructed from a bipartite density operator and its two lifted marginals are polynomial invariants of local-unitary conjugation. We determine the precise information encoded in these invariants. Whenever one subsystem is a qubit, the ordinary marginal-word family determines the full spectrum of the partial transpose and hence decides whether the state has the positive-partial-transpose property. In $2\otimes2$ and $2\otimes3$ systems, this yields complete separability criteria. For the two-qubit system, a finite subfamily additionally separates local-unitary orbits, and a finite extension generates the polynomial invariant ring. These three tasks already diverge for qubit-qutrit states: we exhibit full-rank, locally maximally mixed states that agree on all ordinary marginal-word invariants yet have different operator-Schmidt ranks, together with a quartic correlation invariant that separates them. When both local dimensions are at least three, the analogous collapse on the locally maximally mixed sector produces isospectral pairs consisting of one separable state and one entangled state with negative partial transpose. The ordinary Bargmann algebra therefore coincides with the full local unitary invariant ring if and only if both subsystems are qubits. The missing data are geometric: they encode the placement of global eigenspaces relative to the tensor-product decomposition

Local Equivalence for a Class of Bipartite Quantum Mixed States

X. H. Wang, Sergio A Albeverio, L. Cattaneo +1 more

We study the equivalence of bipartite mixed states under local unitary transformations. A complete set of invariants under local unitary transformations is presented for a class of mixed states in CM ⊗ CN composite systems. It is shown that two density matrices in this class are locally equivalent if and only if all these invariants have equal values for these density matrices.

Uncountably many inequivalent maximally entangled measurements for two qutrits

Elna Svegborn, Jef Pauwels, Nicolas Gisin +1 more

Every two-qubit measurement basis composed of maximally entangled eigenstates can be transformed into the Bell basis via local unitary operations. For higher dimensions, in contrast, there exist inequivalent bases composed of maximally entangled eigenstates. Here, we provide a single-parameter family of two-qutrit maximally entangled measurement bases, and demonstrate that none of the bases are equivalent to each other under local unitaries. These bases are constructed from the continuous family of symmetric informationally complete sets of states in dimension three. By studying the local unitary bases that generate the family of two-qutrit maximally entangled measurement bases, we construct the first examples of wild error bases in the smallest dimension where these can exist. Finally, we discuss how distinct measurements in the family lead to differences in performance in several scenarios relevant in quantum information.

Certifying separability and entanglement classes of not-completely-permutation-symmetric qudit states

Artur Barasiński, Mateusz Nowotarski

We analyze the entanglement properties for the not-completely-permutation-symmetric states of quantum systems composed of two subsystems with an equal but arbitrary finite local Hilbert space dimension. We investigate both pure and mixed states with such a symmetry obtained by relaxing the symmetry requirement of the axisymmetric states. For such states we discuss the entanglement classification with respect to stochastic local operations and classical communication and establish the entanglement quantitatively by means of concurrence and negativity. In particular, we determine the separability criterion in the frame of various methods, including the $k$-positive map witness, optimal Schmidt-number witnesses, and entanglement measures.
