Fusion of conformal defects in interacting theories

Abstract

We study fusion of two scalar Wilson defects. We propose that fusion holds at a quantum level by showing that bare one-point functions stay invariant. This is an expected result as the path integral stays invariant under fusion of the two defects. The difference instead lies in renormalization of local quantities on the defects. Those on the fused defect takes into account UV divergences in the fusion limit when the two defects approach eachother, in addition to UV divergences in the coincident limit of defect-local fields and in the near defect limits of bulk-local fields. At the fixed point of the corresponding RG flow the two conformal defects have fused into a single conformal defect.

At the fixed point of the corresponding RG flow the two conformal defects have fused into a single conformal defect identical to one of the original scalar Wilson defects. Topological defect lines and renormalization group flows in two dimensions

Chi‐Ming Chang, Ying-Hsuan Lin, Shu-Heng Shao +2 more

A bstract We consider topological defect lines (TDLs) in two-dimensional conformal field theories. Generalizing and encompassing both global symmetries and Verlinde lines, TDLs together with their attached defect operators provide models of fusion categories without braiding. We study the crossing relations of TDLs, discuss their relation to the ’t Hooft anomaly, and use them to constrain renormalization group flows to either conformal critical points or topological quantum field theories (TQFTs). We show that if certain non-invertible TDLs are preserved along a RG flow, then the vacuum cannot be a non-degenerate gapped state. For various massive flows, we determine the infrared TQFTs completely from the consideration of TDLs together with modular invariance.

Renormalization group defects for boundary flows

Anatoly Konechny

Recently, Gaiotto (2012 arXiv:1201.0767) considered conformal defects which produce an expansion of infrared local fields in terms of the ultraviolet (UV) ones for a given renormalization group flow. In this paper, we propose that for a boundary RG flow in two dimensions there exist boundary condition changing fields (RG defect fields) linking the UV and the infrared (IR) conformal boundary conditions which carry similar information on the expansion of boundary fields at the fixed points. We propose an expression for a pairing between IR and UV operators in terms of a four-point function with two insertions of the RG defect fields. For the boundary flows in minimal models triggered by ψ 13 perturbation, we make an explicit proposal for the RG defect fields. We check our conjecture by a number of calculations done for the example of ( p , 2) → ( p − 1, 1)⊕( p + 1, 1) flows.

Towards a C-theorem in defect CFT

Nozomu Kobayashi, Tatsuma Nishioka, Yoshiki Sato +1 more

Abstract We explore a C-theorem in defect conformal field theories (DCFTs) that unify all the known conjectures and theorems until now. We examine as a candidate C-function the additional contributions from conformal defects to the sphere free energy and the entanglement entropy across a sphere in a number of examples including holographic models. We find the two quantities are equivalent, when suitably regularized, for codimension-one defects (or boundaries), but differ by a universal constant term otherwise. Moreover, we find in a few field theoretic examples that the sphere free energy decreases but the entanglement entropy increases along a certain renormalization group (RG) flow triggered by a defect localized perturbation which is assumed to have a trivial IR fixed point without defects. We hence propose a C-theorem in DCFTs stating that the increment of the regularized sphere free energy due to the defect does not increase under any defect RG flow. We also provide a proof of our proposal in several holographic models of defect RG flows.

Fusion of Integrable Defects and the Defect $g$-Function

Yang He, Yunfeng Jiang, Yuxiao Liu

We study exact defect $g$-functions for integrable line defects in two-dimensional integrable quantum field theory and use them to probe defect fusion. We consider three settings: fusion of purely transmitting topological defects, fusion of non-topological defects with reflection and transmission, and fusion of a defect with an integrable boundary. For topological defects, the separated logarithmic $g$-function is additive, and the fusion limit is controlled by the multiplicative composition of transmission factors. For non-topological defects, separation-dependent phases in the Bethe-Yang equations produce oscillatory finite-size effects, while the fused defect is described by effective reflection and transmission amplitudes. In the Ising examples studied here, fusion involving non-topological defects lowers the finite localized contribution to the entropy, whereas topological defect-boundary fusion leaves it unchanged.
