An algebraic approach to intertwined quantum phase transitions in the Zr isotopes

Abstract

The algebraic framework of the interacting boson model with configuration mixing is employed to demonstrate the occurrence of intertwined quantum phase transitions (IQPTs) in the _{40} 40 Zr isotopes with neutron number 52-70. The detailed quantum and classical analyses reveal a QPT of crossing normal and intruder configurations superimposed on a QPT of the intruder configuration from U(5) to SU(3) and a crossover from SU(3) to SO(6) dynamical symmetries.

Multiple quantum phase transitions in the Zr isotopes

N. Gavrielov, A. Leviatan, FRANCESCO IACHELLO

We present a detailed analysis of spectra and other observables for the entire chain of Zr isotopes, from neutron number 52 to 70, in the framework of the interacting boson model with configuration mixing. The results suggest a remarkable interplay of multiple quantum phase transitions (QPTs). One type of QPT involves an abrupt crossing of normal and intruder configurations, superimposed on a second type of QPT involving gradual shape-changes within each configuration.

Quantum and classical analyses of intertwined phase transitions in odd-mass Nb isotopes

A. Leviatan

Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in odd-mass Nb isotopes are investigated in the framework of the interacting boson-fermion model with configuration mixing. A quantum analysis reveals a Type I QPT (gradual shape-evolution within the intruder configuration) superimposed on a Type II QPT (abrupt crossing of normal and intruder states), thus demonstrating the occurrence of intertwined QPTs. A classical analysis highlights the implications for the single particle motion in the deformed field generated by the even-even Zr cores.

Intertwined Quantum Phase Transitions

N. Gavrielov, A. Leviatan, FRANCESCO IACHELLO

We introduce the notion of intertwined quantum phase transitions (IQPTs), for which shape-changes and configuration-changes in the ground state of a system are intertwined. We demonstrate the relevance of IQPTs to the Zr isotopes, where one of the most complex situations encountered in nuclear physics occurs, with coexisting Type I and Type II quantum phase transitions, and ground state shapes changing from spherical to prolate axially deformed and finally to gamma-unstable. Comparison with experimental data provides the first evidence for IQPTs in physical systems.

Intertwined Quantum Phase Transitions in Bose and Bose-Fermi Systems

A. Leviatan

Abstract Pronounced structural changes within individual configurations (Type I QPT), superimposed on an abrupt crossing of these configurations (Type II QPT), define the notion of intertwined quantum phase transitions (QPTs). We discuss and present evidence for such a scenario in finite Bose and Bose-Fermi systems. The analysis is based on algebraic models with explicit configuration mixing, where the two types of QPTs describe shape-phase transitions in-between different dynamical symmetries and shape-coexistence with crossing.

Quantum phase transitions studied within the interacting boson model

Pavel Cejnar, Jan Jolie

We study quasicritical phenomena in transitions between two "quantum phases" of a finite boson system, described by the interacting boson model 1 used in nuclear physics. The model is formulated in the algebraic framework and has a simple geometrical interpretation; the "phases" represented by dynamical symmetries U(5) and SU(3) correspond to spherical and deformed nuclear shapes. The quasicriticality of the U(5)-SU(3) transition is shown to be connected with the following phenomena simultaneously occurring in a narrow parameter region between the symmetries: (a) abrupt structural changes of eigenstates, (b) multiple avoided crossing of levels, (c) peaked density of exceptional points, (d) qualitative changes of the corresponding classical potential. We show that these spectroscopic features influence the dynamics of intersymmetry transitions in the model parameter space if the parameters themselves become dynamical variables.

Lie algebra symmetries and quantum phase transitions in nuclei

Vkbk Ota

In this paper, an overview of some aspects of quantum phase transitions (QPT) in nuclei is given and they are: (i) QPT in interacting boson model (sdIBM), (ii) QPT in two-level models, (iii) critical point E(5) and X(5) symmetries, (iv) QPT in a simple solvable model with three-body forces. In addition, some open problems are also given.
