Abstract

We construct a class of exact eigenstates of the Hamiltonian obtained by projecting the Hubbard interaction term onto the flat band subspace of a generic lattice model. These exact eigenstates are many-body states in which an arbitrary number of localized fermionic particles coexist with a sea of mobile Cooper pairs with zero momentum. By considering the dice lattice as an example, we provide evidence that these exact eigenstates are, in fact, a manifestation of local integrals of motions of the projected Hamiltonian. In particular, the spin and particle densities retain memory of the initial state for a very long time if localized unpaired particles are present at the beginning of the time evolution. This shows that many-body localization of quasiparticles and superfluidity can coexist even in generic two-dimensional lattice models with flat bands, for which it is not known how to construct local conserved quantities. Our results open interesting perspectives on the old condensed-matter problem of the interplay between superconductivity and localization.

Quasiparticle localization and ergodicity breaking in flat-band lattice models

Koushik Swaminathan

In lattice models, destructive interference can quench single-particle motion and produce (nearly) dispersionless Bloch bands, known as flat bands. Suppressing kinetic energy enhances the role of interactions and can lead to pairing, constrained dynamics, and localization-like behavior even in translationally invariant settings. This thesis studies attractive Hubbard-type interactions in such flat-band systems using an isolated-band (projected) description, which yields an effective Hamiltonian in a Wannier-orbital basis. The π-flux dice lattice is a convenient focus because its two lowest bands are perfectly flat and degenerate, and their subspace admits compactly localized Wannier functions. This makes the projection straightforward to implement and yields a projected Hamiltonian with a simple, short-range structure. A one-dimensional reference model is used alongside the dice lattice to separate and benchmark the effects of different processes. In Publication I, we construct a class of exact many-body eigenstates of the projected Hamiltonian of generic lattice models with flat bands in which localized unpaired quasiparticles coexist with a background of paired particles in the zero-momentum state. This general result motivates the study of a specific model, the π-flux dice-lattice. Using exact diagonalization and realtime evolution from few-particle initial states, we show that two-body bound states behave ergodically. At the same time, the density and spin distribution retain strong memory of the initial quasiparticle positions at long times. These results demonstrate localization-like dynamics in a translationally invariant flat-band model, where memory arises from projection-induced constraints rather than quenched disorder. In Publication II, we introduce a one-dimensional on-site/bond singlet model whose terms mirror those of the projected dice-lattice Hamiltonian, with tunable couplings controlling their relative strengths. Exact diagonalization shows that, for some couplings, the spectrum and dynamics of the on-site/bond-singlet model closely reproduce those of the projected dice lattice. We then use spectral statistics to probe how the different dynamical regimes manifest in energy-level correlations. In Publication III, we apply spectral statistics to the projected dice lattice using higher-order spacing and gap-ratio diagnostics. We find a robust parity dependence: even particle-number sectors show multi-block GOE behavior within fixed symmetry sectors, while odd particle-number sectors exhibit exact doublets and inter-doublet correlations that are GUE at even orders. The appearance of distinct random-matrix ensembles (GOE and GUE) within the same physical model is an unusual and interesting feature, which calls for a deeper understanding of the hidden symmetry structure of the Hamiltonians obtained by projecting onto the flat-band subspace in the dice lattice and other lattice models with flat bands realized with ultracold gases in optical lattices and in the newly discovered class of moiré materials.

Preformed pairs in flat Bloch bands

Murad Tovmasyan, Sebastiano Peotta, Long Liang +2 more

In a flat Bloch band, the kinetic energy is quenched and single particles cannot propagate since they are localized due to destructive interference. Whether this remains true in the presence of interactions is a challenging question because a flat dispersion usually leads to highly correlated ground states. Here we compute numerically the ground-state energy of lattice models with completely flat band structure in a ring geometry in the presence of an attractive Hubbard interaction. We find that the energy as a function of the magnetic flux threading the ring has a half-flux quantum ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}}_{0}/2=hc/(2e)$ period, indicating that only bound pairs of particles with charge $2e$ are propagating, while single quasiparticles with charge $e$ remain localized. For some one-dimensional lattice models, we show analytically that in fact the whole many-body spectrum has the same periodicity. Our analytical arguments are valid for both bosons and fermions, for generic interactions respecting some symmetries of the lattice and at arbitrary temperatures. Moreover, for the same one-dimensional lattice models, we construct an extensive number of exact conserved quantities. These conserved quantities are associated to the occupation of localized single quasiparticle states and force the single-particle propagator to vanish beyond a finite range. Our results suggest that in lattice models with flat bands preformed pairs dominate transport even above the critical temperature of the transition to a superfluid state.

Coexistence of ergodic and nonergodic behavior and level spacing statistics in a one-dimensional model of a flat band superconductor

Meri Teeriaho, Ville-Vertti Linho, Koushik Swaminathan +1 more

Motivated by recent studies of the projected dice lattice Hamiltonian [K. Swaminathan , ], we introduce the on-site/bond singlet (OBS) model, a one-dimensional model of a flat band superconductor, in order to better understand the quasiparticle localization and interesting coexistence of ergodic and nonergodic behavior present in the former model. The OBS model is the sum of terms that have direct counterparts in the projected dice lattice Hamiltonian, each of which is parameterized by a coupling constant. Exact diagonalization reveals that the energy spectrum and nonequilibrium dynamics of the OBS model are essentially the same as that of the dice lattice for some values of the coupling constants. The quasiparticle localization and breaking of ergodicity manifest in a striking manner in the level spacing distribution. Its near Poissonian form provides evidence for the existence of local integrals of motion and establishes the OBS model as a nontrivial integrable generalization of the projected Creutz ladder Hamiltonian. These results show that level spacing statistics is a promising tool to study quasiparticle excitations in flat band superconductors.

Many-body flatband localization

Carlo Danieli, Alexei Andreanov, Sergej Flach A

We generate translationally invariant systems exhibiting many-body localization from all-bands-flat single-particle lattice Hamiltonians dressed with suitable short-range many-body interactions. This phenomenon, dubbed many-body flatband localization, is based on symmetries of both single-particle and interaction terms in the Hamiltonian, and it holds for any interaction strength. We propose a generator of corresponding Hamiltonians which covers both interacting bosons and fermions for arbitrary lattice dimensions, and we provide explicit examples of such models in one and two lattice dimensions. We also explicitly construct an extensive set of local integrals of motion for this set of models. Our results can be further generalized to long-range interactions as well as to systems lacking translational invariance.

Obstructed Cooper pairs in flat band systems -- weakly-coherent superfluids and exact spin liquids

Tamaghna Hazra, Verma, Nishchhal, Schmalian, Jörg

Superconductivity in a partially filled flat band presents a vexing conceptual hurdle because the absence of a Fermi surface precludes a weak-coupling regime where one can extend insights from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer picture of a Fermi surface instability. We approach the strongly correlated problem of flat band superconductivity from the strong coupling limit of local attractive interactions on line-graph lattices, whose non-interacting bandstructures host exactly flat bands due to frustrated hopping. In this limit, the pair kinetic energy which sets the superfluid stiffness is expected to scale inversely with the pair binding interaction. Here we demonstrate a striking counterexample. We show that when doped charges propagate on the line-graph of a lattice with strong pairing interaction and broken time-reversal symmetry, they bind into obstructed Cooper pairs whose motion is frustrated by destructive interference. As a result, the leading-order pair kinetic energy vanishes identically in the strong-coupling expansion, producing a flat bosonic band of compact localised pair states, zero superfluid stiffness at leading order, and an extensively degenerate many-body ground state manifold. At quarter filling, the frustrated pair dynamics maps onto a quantum dimer model which has a $d$-wave resonating-valence-bond ground state when time-reversal is broken. The pairing Hamiltonian in this limit thus has a topologically ordered spin liquid ground state which becomes exact at the analytically solvable Rokhsar-Kivelson point with long-range entanglement and deconfined holon excitations. Interestingly, we find exact compact localised eigenstates and extensive degeneracies in the many-body eigenstates of this emergent dimer model. Our results establish a disorder-free mechanism for interaction-driven localisation, in which strong pairing collapses the kinetic energy of Cooper pairs.

Many-body superconductivity in topological flat bands

Jonah Herzog-Arbeitman, Aaron Chew, Kukka-Emilia Huhtinen +2 more

In a flat band superconductor, bosonic excitations disperse while unpaired electrons are immobile. To study this strongly interacting system, we construct a family of multi-band Hubbard models with exact eta-pairing ground states in all space groups. We analytically compute their many-body excitations and find that the Cooper pair bound states obey an effective single-boson hopping Hamiltonian written in terms of the non-interacting wavefunctions. These bound states possess a unique zero-energy excitation whose quadratic dispersion is determined by the minimal quantum metric. The rest of the bound state spectrum is classified by topological quantum chemistry, which we use to identify Cooper pairs with Weyl nodes, higher angular momentum pairing, and fragile topology. Broadening the band dispersion, we find the strongest pairing occurs at half filling and not at the highest density of states. Our analytical results prove that the elementary fermionic and bosonic excitations, corresponding respectively to pairing and coherence, are governed by distinct properties of the flat band, rigorously establishing its unique phenomenology. Superconductivity in flat bands is a central feature of quantum geometric effects, supported by mean-field theory and numerics. Here, the authors exhibit a large family of flat band Hubbard models whose ground states, Bogoliubov-de-Gennes particles, and Cooper pairs are exactly solvable with analytically calculable dispersions.
