Abstract

There are various research strategies used for non-Hermitian systems, which typically involve introducing non-Hermitian terms to preexisting Hermitian Hamiltonians. It can be challenging to directly design non-Hermitian many-body models that exhibit unique features not found in Hermitian systems. In this Letter, we propose a new method for constructing non-Hermitian many-body systems by generalizing the parent Hamiltonian method into non-Hermitian regimes. This allows us to build a local Hamiltonian using given matrix product states as its left and right ground states. We demonstrate this method by constructing a non-Hermitian spin-1 model from the asymmetric Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki state, which preserves both chiral order and symmetry-protected topological order. Our approach opens up a new paradigm for systematically constructing and studying non-Hermitian many-body systems, providing guiding principles for exploring new properties and phenomena in non-Hermitian physics.

Parent Hamiltonian and intrinsic phase transition in non-Hermitian photonic systems

Yuntao Xiao, Yuchen Guo, Xiaojian Huang +6 more

Non-Hermitian systems host phenomena absent in Hermitian physics, but realizing Hamiltonians with intrinsic non-Hermitian properties remains challenging. The theoretical method of non-Hermitian parent Hamiltonian (NH-PH) enables the construction of a non-Hermitian system from a pair of matrix product states (MPSs) with tailored properties. Here, we report the first experimental generation of NH-PHs. This generation starts from MPSs that represent asymmetric Affleck--Kennedy--Lieb--Tasaki (AKLT) states. The construction is validated with single photons via imaginary-time evolution of the generated NH-PH to obtain its left and right ground states. We then characterize the properties of the system by measuring four different order parameters that probe non-reciprocal correlations, chiral imbalance, and conventional antiferromagnetic correlations. Furthermore, extending the framework to a larger system with a different model, we observe an intrinsic non-Hermitian phase transition, manifested by abrupt jumps of an order parameter when the designated zero-energy modes cease to be the globally lowest-energy states. Our work provides the first experimental realization and characterization of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with controllable and customizable properties, opening new avenues for exploring intrinsic non-Hermitian phenomena across diverse physical platforms.

Simple Hamiltonians for Matrix Product State models

Norbert Schuch, András Molnár, David Pérez-Garcı́a

Matrix Product States (MPS) and Tensor Networks provide a general framework for the construction of solvable models. The best-known example is the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model, which is the ground state of a 2-body nearest-neighbor parent Hamiltonian. We show that such simple parent Hamiltonians for MPS models are, in fact, much more prevalent than hitherto known: The existence of a single example with a simple Hamiltonian for a given choice of dimensions already implies that any generic MPS with those dimensions possesses an equally simple Hamiltonian. We illustrate our finding by discussing a number of models with nearest-neighbor parent Hamiltonians, which generalize the AKLT model on various levels.

Non-Hermitian parent Hamiltonian from a generalized quantum covariance matrix

Y. C. Tang, W. Zhu

Quantum inverse problem is defined as how to determine a local Hamiltonian from a single eigenstate. This question is valid not only in Hermitian system but also in non-Hermitian system. So far, most attempts are limited to Hermitian systems, while the possible non-Hermitian solution remains outstanding. In this work, we generalize the quantum covariance matrix method to the cases that are applicable to non-Hermitian systems, through which we are able to explicitly reconstruct the non-Hermitian parent Hamiltonian from an arbitrary pair of biorthogonal eigenstates. As concrete examples, we successfully apply our approach in spin chain with Lee-Yang singularity and a non-Hermitian interacting fermion model. Some generalization and further application of our approach are also discussed. Our work provides a systematical and efficient way to construct non-Hermitian Hamiltonian from a single pair of biorthogonal eigenstates and shed light on future exploration on non-Hermitian physics.

Variational Matrix Product State Approach for Non-Hermitian System Based on a Companion Hermitian Hamiltonian

Zhen Guo, Zheng-Tao Xu, Meng Li +2 more

Non-Hermitian systems exhibiting topological properties are attracting growing interest. In this work, we propose an algorithm for solving the ground state of a non-Hermitian system in the matrix product state (MPS) formalism based on a companion Hermitian Hamiltonian. If the eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian system are known, the companion Hermitian Hamiltonian can be directly constructed and solved using Hermitian variational methods. When the eigenvalues are unknown, a gradient descent along with the companion Hermitian Hamiltonian yields both the ground state eigenenergy and the eigenstate. With the variational principle as a solid foundation, our algorithm ensures convergence and provides results in excellent agreement with the exact solutions of the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (nH-SSH) model as well as its interacting extension. The approach we present avoids solving any non-Hermitian matrix and overcomes numerical instabilities commonly encountered in large non-Hermitian systems.

Large classes of quantum scarred Hamiltonians from matrix product states

Sanjay Moudgalya, Edward O'Brien, Bogdan Andrei Bernevig +2 more

The authors develop a general formalism to systematically construct parent Hamiltonians with quasiparticle excited states starting from a matrix product state (MPS) wave function. The resulting parent Hamiltonians are generically nonintegrable, and the quasiparticle excited states are thus examples of quantum many-body scars of the Hamiltonian. This method is used to recover well-known quantum scarred models, such as the AKLT spin chain, as well as to construct many new families of models, thus illustrating the close connection between parent Hamiltonians of MPS and quantum scarred models.

Determining the non-Hermitian parent Hamiltonian from a single eigenstate

Xu-Dan Xie, Zheng‐Yuan Xue, Dan-Bo Zhang

A quantum state for being an eigenstate of some local Hamiltonian should be constrained by zero energy variance and consequently, the constraint is rather strong that a single eigenstate may uniquely determine the Hamiltonian. For non-Hermitian systems, it is natural to expect that determining the Hamiltonian requires a pair of both left and right eigenstates. Here, we observe that it can be sufficient to determine a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian from a single right or left eigenstate. Our approach is based on the quantum covariance matrix, where the solution of Hamiltonian corresponds to the complex null vector. Our scheme favors non-Hermitian Hamiltonian learning on experimental quantum systems, as only the right eigenstates there can be accessed. Furthermore, we use numerical simulations to examine the effects of measurement errors and show the stability of our scheme.
