Abstract

Inspired by the covering-space method in path integrals on multiply connected spaces, we here present a universal formula of time-evolution kernels for continuous- and discrete-time quantum walks on orbit spaces. In this note, we focus on the case in which walkers' configuration space is the orbit space $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}/\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$, where $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ is an arbitrary lattice and $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ is a discrete group whose action on $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ has no fixed points. We show that the time-evolution kernel on $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}/\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ can be written as a weighted sum of time-evolution kernels on $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$, where the summation is over the orbit of initial point in $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ and weight factors are given by a one-dimensional unitary representation of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$. Focusing on one dimension, we present a number of examples of the formula. We also present universal formulas of resolvent kernels, canonical density matrices, and unitary representations of arbitrary groups in quantum walks on $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}/\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$, all of which are constructed in exactly the same way as for the time-evolution kernel.

Quantum walks and orbital states of a Weyl particle

Makoto Katori, Soichi Fujino, Norio Konno

The time-evolution equation of a one-dimensional quantum walker is exactly mapped to the three-dimensional Weyl equation for a zero-mass particle with spin $1∕2$, in which each wave number $k$ of the walker's wave function is mapped to a point $\mathbf{q}(k)$ in the three-dimensional momentum space and $\mathbf{q}(k)$ makes a planar orbit as $k$ changes its value in $[\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi})$. The integration over $k$ providing the real-space wave function for a quantum walker corresponds to considering an orbital state of a Weyl particle, which is defined as a superposition (curvilinear integration) of the energy-momentum eigenstates of a free Weyl equation along the orbit. Konno's novel distribution function of a quantum walker's pseudovelocities in the long-time limit is fully controlled by the shape of the orbit and how the orbit is embedded in the three-dimensional momentum space. The family of orbital states can be regarded as a geometrical representation of the unitary group U(2) and the present study will propose a new group-theoretical point of view for quantum-walk problems.

Path integral approach to one-dimensional discrete-time quantum walk

Karthik S. Joshi, S. K. Srivatsa, R. Srikanth

Discrete-time quantum walk in one-dimension is studied from a path-integral perspective. This enables derivation of a closed-form expression for amplitudes corresponding to any coin-position basis of the state vector of the quantum walker at an arbitrary step of the walk. This provides a new approach to the foundations and applications of quantum walks.

Molchanov's Formula and Quantum Walks: A Probabilistic Approach

Hoang Vu

This paper establishes a robust link between quantum dynamics and classical ones by deriving probabilistic representation for both continuous time and discrete time quantum walks. We first adapt Molchanov formula, originally employed in the study of Schrodinger operators on multidimensional integer lattice, to characterize the evolution of continuous time quantum walks. Extending this framework, we develop a probabilistic method to represent discrete time quantum walks on an infinite integer line, bypassing the locality constraints that typically inhibit direct application of Molchanov formula. The validity of our representation is empirically confirmed through a benchmark analysis of the Hadamard walk, demonstrating high fidelity with traditional unitary evolution. Our results suggest that this probabilistic lens offer a powerful alternative for learning multidimensional quantum walks and provides new analytical pathways for investigating quantum systems via classical stochastic processes.

Path-sum solution of the Weyl quantum walk in 3 + 1 dimensions

Giacomo Mauro D’Ariano, Nicola Mosco, Paolo Perinotti +1 more

We consider the Weyl quantum walk in 3+1 dimensions, that is a discrete-time walk describing a particle with two internal degrees of freedom moving on a Cayley graph of the group [Formula: see text], which in an appropriate regime evolves according to Weyl's equation. The Weyl quantum walk was recently derived as the unique unitary evolution on a Cayley graph of [Formula: see text] that is homogeneous and isotropic. The general solution of the quantum walk evolution is provided here in the position representation, by the analytical expression of the propagator, i.e. transition amplitude from a node of the graph to another node in a finite number of steps. The quantum nature of the walk manifests itself in the interference of the paths on the graph joining the given nodes. The solution is based on the binary encoding of the admissible paths on the graph and on the semigroup structure of the walk transition matrices. This article is part of the themed issue 'Second quantum revolution: foundational questions'.

Discrete-time quantum walks in synthetic dimensions

Piergiorgio Ferraro, Caio B. Naves, Jonas Larson

In this work we introduce discrete-time quantum walks in state space, more precisely on Fock-state lattices. Fock-state lattices provide a natural and clean setting for implementing lattice models, particularly in quantum optical systems. Thus, contrary to the common setting where the walker resides in real space or phase space, here the walk takes place in a synthetic space. We present a general formalism based on Lie algebras and their properties. For each Lie algebra one can associate both a phase space and a Fock-state lattice, and by understanding how these spaces are related, together with the action of generalized displacement operators, we construct the discrete unitary operator that generates the walk. In this framework the displacement operators replace the usual nearest-neighbor shifts and lead to state-dependent tunneling on the lattice. By considering several examples we demonstrate ballistic spreading and other characteristic features of discrete-time quantum walks, such as coin-walker entanglement and symmetry-induced interference patterns. We also show that different algebraic structures can give rise to qualitatively different dynamics, including anomalous behavior such as super-ballistic spreading as well as localization effects.

The generator and quantum Markov semigroup for quantum walks

Chul Ki Ko, Hyun Jae Yoo

The quantum walks in the lattice spaces are represented as unitary evolutions. We find a generator for the evolution and apply it to further understand the walks. We first extend the discrete time quantum walks to continuous time walks. Then we construct the quantum Markov semigroup for quantum walks and characterize it in an invariant subalgebra. In the meanwhile, we obtain the limit distributions of the quantum walks in one-dimension with a proper scaling, which was obtained by Konno by a different method.
