Relative asymptotic oscillations of the out-of-time-ordered correlator as a quantum chaos indicator

Abstract

A detailed numerical study reveals that the asymptotic values of the standard-deviation-to-mean ratio of the out-of-time-ordered correlator in energy eigenstates can be successfully used as a measure of the quantum chaoticity of the system. We employ a finite-size fully connected quantum system with two degrees of freedom, namely, the algebraic u(3) model, and demonstrate a clear correspondence between the energy-smoothed relative oscillations of the correlators and the ratio of the chaotic part of the volume of phase space in the classical limit of the system. We also show how the relative oscillations scale with the system size and conjecture that the scaling exponent can also serve as a chaos indicator.

Quantum chaos in finite many-body systems

Jakub Novotný

In this work, we show, that relative oscillations in asymptotic times of microcanonical Out-of-Time-Order correlators (OTOCs) are suppressed by chaos with the size of the sys- tem. Therefore they can serve as an indicator of quantum chaos in quantum systems. We demonstrate this phenomenon on numerical results of the Out-of-Time-Order correlators from a model with hamiltonian based on the u(3) algebra. Firstly we prove, that this model can be used not only for the description of molecular vibrations, but also Bose- Einstein condensate. Then we employ several methods for the analysis of both quantum and classical chaos, namely spectral statistics such as Nearest Neighbour Spacing Distri- bution and Brody distribution, Inverse Participation Ratio, Poincaré sections, Lyapunov exponent, and the chaotic fraction of classical phase space. We compare these results with relative oscillations of microcanonical Out-of-Time-Order correlators and show, that their suppression corresponds with the chaoticity of the quantum system and the fraction of chaotic regions of the classical phase space. 1

Quantum chaos in the Dicke model and its variants

Devvrat Tiwari, Subhashish Banerjee

Recently, the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) has gained much attention as an indicator of quantum chaos. In the semi-classical limit, its exponential growth rate resembles the classical Lyapunov exponent. The quantum–classical correspondence has been supported for the one-body chaotic systems as well as realistic systems with interactions, as in the Dicke model, a model of multi-two-level atoms and cavity field interactions. To this end, we calculate the OTOC for different variations of the Dicke model in an open quantum system setting. The connection between the superradiant phase transition of the Dicke model and the OTOC is studied. Further, we establish a relation between the OTOC and the second-order coherence function. This becomes important for the experimental studies of the OTOC and quantum chaos in the models of quantum optics.

Out-of-time-order correlator in coupled harmonic oscillators

Tetsuya Akutagawa, Koji Hashimoto, Toshiaki Sasaki +1 more

Abstract Exponential growth of thermal out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) is an indicator of a possible gravity dual, and a simple toy quantum model showing the growth is being looked for. We consider a system of two harmonic oscillators coupled nonlinearly with each other, and numerically observe that the thermal OTOC grows exponentially in time. The system is well-known to be classically chaotic, and is a reduction of Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. The exponential growth is certified because the growth exponent (quantum Lyapunov exponent) of the thermal OTOC is well matched with the classical Lyapunov exponent, including their energy/temperature dependence. Even in the presence of the exponential growth in the OTOC, the energy level spacings are not sufficient to judge a Wigner distribution, hence the OTOC is a better indicator of quantum chaos.

On the Emergence of Chaotic Behaviour in Quantum Systems

Hasan Al-Husieni

Quantum chaos remains a challenging concept because classical signatures of chaos do not directly transfer to quantum systems. This thesis investigates which indicators of chaos are shared between classical and quantum mechanics and how they can be used to characterise non-integrable many-body systems. We examine ergodicity and thermalisation by means of the Eigenstate Thermalisation Hypothesis (ETH) as signatures of non-integrability, and study the Out-of-Time-Ordered Correlator (OTOC) as a probe of information scrambling and as a measure of sensitivity to initial conditions. We briefly discuss the appearance of chaotic wavefunctions and observations such as quantum scars and quantum ergodicity in individual eigenmodes of the Bunimovich stadium potential. Using the OTOC, we discuss extensions of the Lyapunov exponent to quantum systems and apply these ideas to the Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev (SYK) model. In the large-N limit, and using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we find that the model might potentially be the dual of a black hole and that it is maximally chaotic. We conclude by discussing additional proposed signatures of quantum chaos and prospects for experimental realisations of the SYK model.

Gauging classical and quantum integrability through out-of-time-ordered correlators

Emiliano M. Fortes, Ignacio García-Mata, Rodolfo A. Jalabert +1 more

Out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) have been proposed as a probe of chaos in quantum mechanics, on the basis of their short-time exponential growth found in some particular setups. However, it has been seen that this behavior is not universal. Therefore, we query other quantum chaos manifestations arising from the OTOCs, and we thus study their long-time behavior in systems of completely different nature: quantum maps, which are the simplest chaotic one-body system, and spin chains, which are many-body systems without a classical limit. It is shown that studying the long-time regime of the OTOCs it is possible to detect and gauge the transition between integrability and chaos, and we benchmark the transition with other indicators of quantum chaos based on the spectra and the eigenstates of the systems considered. For systems with a classical analog, we show that the proposed OTOC indicators have a very high accuracy that allow us to detect subtle features along the integrability-to-chaos transition.

Out-of-time ordered correlator for a chaotic many-body quantum system

Hans A. Weidenmüller

Abstract Using the parametric representation of a chaotic many-body quantum system derived earlier, we calculate explicitly the large-time dependence and asymptotic value of the out-of-time correlator (OTOC) of that system. The dependence on time t is determined by Δ t / ℏ . Here Δ is the energy correlation width within which the Bohigas–Giannoni–Schmit conjecture applies. We conjecture that Δ is universally related to the leading Ljapunov coefficient of the corresponding classical system by Δ = ℏ λ max . Then the large-time behavior of OTOC is given by the dimensionless parameter λ max t .
