Abstract

We consider how the reduced dynamics of an open quantum system coupled to an environment is realized in the Poincar\'e symmetry. The reduced dynamics is described by a dynamical map, which is a quantum channel (a completely positive and trace-preserving linear map) given by tracing out the environment from the total unitary evolution without initial correlations. We investigate the dynamical map invariant under the Poincar\'e transformations and discuss how the invariance constrains the form of the map. Based on the unitary representation theory of the Poincar\'e group, we develop a systematic way to construct the dynamical map with the Poincar\'e invariance. Using this method, we derive such a dynamical map for a spinless massive particle, and the conservation of the Poincar\'e generators is discussed. We then find the map with the Poincar\'e invariance and the four-momentum conservation. Further, we show that the conservation of the angular momentum and the boost operator makes the map of a spinless massive particle unitary.

Markovian quantum master equation with Poincaré symmetry

Kaito Kashiwagi, Akira Matsumura

We investigate what kind of Markovian quantum master equation (QME) in the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad form is realized under Poincar\'e symmetry. The solution of the Markovian QME is given by a quantum dynamical semigroup, for which we introduce invariance under Poincar\'e transformations. Using the invariance of the dynamical semigroup and applying the unitary representation of the Poincar\'e group, we derive the Markovian QME for a relativistic massive spin-0 particle. Introducing the field operator of the massive particle and examining its evolution, we find that the field follows a dissipative Klein-Gordon equation. In addition, we show that any two local operators for spacelike separated regions commute with each other. This means that the microcausality condition is satisfied for the dissipative model of the massive particle.

Consequences of space-time invariances in quantum mechanics and direct interaction theories

Patricia Ann Kalyniak

The problem of describing a quantum mechanical system is considered. For a system which is invariant under the Poincaré (inhomogeneous Lorentz) transformations this description is provided by the generators of those transformations, which satisfy the usual commutation relations. General expressions for the centre of mass position and internal angular momentum operators, in terms of these generators, are obtained. The generators of the Poincaré transformations are written in terms of the fundamental dynamical variables for several systems. The systems considered are those consisting of a single free spinless particle, a single free particle with spin, a single free Dirac particle, n noninteracting particles, and ft interacting particles. In each case, the centre of mass position and internal angular momentum are given in terms of the fundamental dynamical variables of the system. For the first two systems listed above, these two operators are found to be equal to the Cartesian coordinates and spin of the particle, respectively. In the case of the Dirac particle, these operators are seen to be related to the Cartesian coordinates and spin of the particle via the Pryce-Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. Following Bakamjian and Thomas, interaction is introduced to the n particle system via a single operator which depends only on internal variables. The condition of "asymptotic covariance" of the scattering operator is discussed for two particle scattering. The scattering operator for a two particle system with no bound states and with Poincaré generators of the Bakamjian-Thomas form is seen to be asymptotically covariant.

On the Use of Total State Decompositions for the Study of Reduced Dynamics

Andrea Smirne, Nina Megier, Bassano Vacchini

The description of the dynamics of an open quantum system in the presence of initial correlations with the environment needs different mathematical tools than the standard approach to reduced dynamics, which is based on the use of a time-dependent completely positive trace preserving (CPTP) map. Here, we take into account an approach that is based on a decomposition of any possibly correlated bipartite state as a conical combination involving statistical operators on the environment and general linear operators on the system, which allows one to fix the reduced-system evolution via a finite set of time-dependent CPTP maps. In particular, we show that such a decomposition always exists, also for infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces, and that the number of resulting CPTP maps is bounded by the Schmidt rank of the initial global state. We further investigate the case where the CPTP maps are semigroups with generators in the Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan form; for two simple qubit models, we identify the positivity domain defined by the initial states that are mapped into proper states at any time of the evolution fixed by the CPTP semigroups.

Deviation from linear reduced dynamics always occurs for each non-factorisable system-environment unitary evolution

Iman Sargolzahi

In the simplest approximation, the reduced dynamics of a quantum system $S$ interacting with its environment $E$ is considered to be given by a completely positive map. But, in general, this is not the case. In fact, the reduced dynamics of the system in not even linear, in general. Whether the reduced dynamics is linear or not is determined by two factors: the set of possible initial states of the system-environment $\mathcal{S}=\left\lbrace ρ_{SE} \right\rbrace $, and the joint system-environment unitary evolution $U$. When $U$ is factorisable as $U=U_S\otimes U_E$, then we can choose $\mathcal{S}=\mathcal{D}$, where $\mathcal{D}$ is the set of all system-environment density operators. In other words, when $U$ is factorisable, the reduced dynamics of the system $S$ is linear (in fact unitary) for arbitrary initial state of the system-environment $ρ_{SE}$. We show that this result cannot be generalized to any non-factorisable $U$: For any non-factorisable unitary evolution of the whole system-environment $U$, the set $\mathcal{S}$ must be chosen as a proper subset of $\mathcal{D}$ to achieve linear reduced dynamics. As a byproduct, considering a convex set of possible initial states of the system-environment $\mathcal{S}$ such that $\mathrm{Tr}_{E} \ \mathcal{S}=\mathrm{Tr}_{E} \ \mathcal{D}$, we show that when the reduced dynamics of the system, for one system-environment unitary evolution $U_1$, is positive, but not completely positive, this implies that reduced dynamics is not linear for another $U_2$.

Dynamical maps for reduced states of indistinguishable particles

Leonardo da Silva Souza

In the present thesis, we examine two subjects in the theory of open quantum systems. The first subject deals with the description of the dynamics of open systems initially correlated with the environment. In the theory of open quantum systems, maps characterizing the dynamics of a quantum system in contact with the environment are usually thought to be completely positive. However, this is not necessarily true if the system and its environment are initially correlated, unless we restrict the domain on which the map acts, in other words, only a subset of the set of states of the system gets mapped to other states by the dynamical map. We present a framework for the construction of reduced dynamical maps for subsystems of indistinguishable fermionic particles. We show that in this scenario, a reduced map in the Kraus representation is possible for some sets of states where the only non-classical correlation present is exchange. The second subject studied is related to the characterization of non-Markovian dynamics with the divisibility and entanglement criteria. We obtain the analytical expression for the Kraus decomposition of the quantum map of an environment modeled by an arbitrary quadratic fermionic Hamiltonian acting on one or two qubits, we derive simple functions to examine the non positivity of the intermediate map. In the particular case of an environment represented by the Ising Hamiltonian, we discuss the two sources of non-Markovianity in the model, one due to the finite size of the lattice, and another due to the kind of interactions.

G-CONSISTENT SUBSETS AND REDUCED DYNAMICAL QUANTUM MAPS

Russell R. Ceballos

A quantum system which evolves in time while interacting with an external environ- ment is said to be an open quantum system (OQS), and the influence of the environment on the unperturbed unitary evolution of the system generally leads to non-unitary dynamics. This kind of open system dynamical evolution has been typically modeled by a Standard Prescription (SP) which assumes that the state of the OQS is initially uncorrelated with the environment state. It is here shown that when a minimal set of physically motivated assumptions are adopted, not only does there exist constraints on the reduced dynamics of an OQS such that this SP does not always accurately describe the possible initial cor- relations existing between the OQS and environment, but such initial correlations, and even entanglement, can be witnessed when observing a particular class of reduced state transformations termed purity extractions are observed. Furthermore, as part of a more fundamental investigation to better understand the minimal set of assumptions required to formulate well defined reduced dynamical quantum maps, it is demonstrated that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between the set of initial reduced states and the set of admissible initial system-environment composite states when G-consistency is enforced. Given the discussions surrounding the requirement of complete positivity and the reliance on the SP, the results presented here may well be found valuable for determining the ba- sic properties of reduced dynamical maps, and when restrictions on the OQS dynamics naturally emerge.
