Fermion Doubling in Dirac Quantum Walks

Chaitanya Gupta, Anthony J. Short

We consider discrete spacetime models known as quantum walks, which can be used to simulate Dirac particles. In particular we look at fermion doubling in these models, in which high momentum states yield additional low energy solutions which behave like Dirac particles. The presence of doublers carries over to the `second quantised' version of the walks represented by quantum cellular automata, which may lead to spurious solutions when introducing interactions. Moreover, we also consider pseudo-doublers, which have high energy but behave like low energy Dirac particles, and cause potential problems regarding the stability of the vacuum. To address these issues, we propose a family of quantum walks, that are free of these doublers and pseudo-doublers, but still simulate the Dirac equation in the continuum limit. However, there remain a small number of additional low energy solutions which do not directly correspond to Dirac particles. While the conventional Dirac walk always has a zero probability for the walker staying at the same point after a single time step, we obtain the family of walks by allowing this probability to be non-zero.

Fragile single-cone Dirac quantum walks in two dimensions

C. W. J. Beenakker, J. Sánchez Férnan, J. Tworzydło

It is known that a one-dimensional (1D) quantum walk gives a local space-time discretization of the massless Dirac equation with a single quasi-energy cone (no fermion doubling at low energies), keeping the fundamental symmetries (chiral and time-reversal) of the continuum theory. We show that the analogous 2D construction is fundamentally more fragile. Local two-band quantum walks can have an unpaired Dirac cone, but the protecting symmetries then cease to be ordinary on-site symmetries: They become non-symmorphic, involving half-lattice translations, and are broken by generic spatial inhomogeneities. In particular, we demonstrate that the 2D Dirac quantum walk based on the Ho-Chalker network model can be gapped by potential scattering, as is evidenced by the breakdown of reflectionless Klein tunneling. The symmorphic symmetry obstruction is sharp: If we allow for couplings that are no longer strictly finite-range but decay exponentially with distance, we can construct a 2D quantum walk with a single Dirac cone and on-site chiral and time-reversal symmetries.

More general correlation functions of twist fields from Ward identities in the massive Dirac theory

James Silk

Following on from previous work we derive the nonlinear differential equations of more general correlators of U (1) twist fields in two-dimensional massive Dirac theory. Using the conserved charges of the double-copy model equations parametrizing the correlators of twist fields with arbitrary twist parameter are found. This method also gives a parametrization of the correlation functions of general, fermionic, descendent twist fields. The equations parametrizing correlators of primary twist fields are compared to those of the literature and evidence is presented to confirm that these equations represent the correct parametrization.
