Abstract

In view of making progress towards establishing a holographic duality for theories defined on a discrete tiling of the hyperbolic plane, we consider a recently proposed boundary spin chain Hamiltonian with aperiodic couplings that are chosen such as to reflect the inflation rule, i.e. the construction principle, of the bulk tiling. As a remnant of conformal symmetry, the spin degrees of freedom are arranged in multiplets of the dihedral group under which the bulk lattice is invariant. For the boundary Hamiltonian, we use strong-disorder RG techniques and evaluate correlation functions, the entanglement entropy and mutual information for the case that the ground state is in an aperiodic singlet phase. We find that two-point functions decay as a power-law with exponent equal to one. Furthermore, we consider the case that the spin variables transform in the fundamental representation of SO(N), leading to a gapless system, and find that the effective central charge obtained from the entanglement entropy scales as lnN, reflecting the number of local degrees of freedom. We also determine the dependence of this central charge on the parameters specifying the bulk tiling. Moreover, we obtain an analytical expression for the mutual information, according to which there is no phase transition at any finite value of the distance between the two intervals involved.

Towards explicit discrete holography: Aperiodic spin chains from hyperbolic tilings

Pablo Basteiro, Giuseppe Di Giulio, Johanna Erdmenger B +3 more

We propose a new example of discrete holography that provides a new step towards establishing the AdS/CFT duality for discrete spaces. A class of boundary Hamiltonians is obtained in a natural way from regular tilings of the hyperbolic Poincaré disk, via an inflation rule that allows to construct the tiling using concentric layers of tiles. The models in this class are aperiodic spin chains, whose sequences of couplings are obtained from the bulk inflation rule. We explicitly choose the aperiodic XXZ spin chain with spin 1/2 degrees of freedom as an example. The properties of this model are studied by using strong disorder renormalization group techniques, which provide a tensor network construction for the ground state of this spin chain. This can be regarded as discrete bulk reconstruction. Moreover we compute the entanglement entropy in this setup in two different ways: a discretization of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula and a generalization of the standard computation for the boundary aperiodic Hamiltonian. For both approaches, a logarithmic growth of the entanglement entropy in the subsystem size is identified. The coefficients, i.e. the effective central charges, depend on the bulk discretization parameters in both cases, albeit in a different way.

Critical spin models from holographic disorder

Dimitris Saraidaris, A. Jahn

Discrete models of holographic dualities, typically modeled by tensor networks on hyperbolic tilings, produce quantum states with a characteristic quasiperiodic disorder not present in continuum holography. In this work, we study the behavior of XXZ spin chains with such symmetries, showing that lessons learned from previous non-interacting (matchgate) tensor networks generalize to more generic Hamiltonians under holographic disorder: While the disorder breaks translation invariance, site-averaged correlations and entanglement of the disorder-free critical phase are preserved at a plateau of nonzero disorder even at large system sizes. In particular, we show numerically that the entanglement entropy curves in this disordered phase follow the expected scaling of a conformal field theory (CFT) in the continuum limit. This property is shown to be non-generic for other types of quasiperiodic disorder, only appearing when our boundary disorder ansatz is described by a "dual" bulk hyperbolic tiling. Our results therefore suggest the existence of a whole class of critical phases whose symmetries are derived from models of discrete holography.

CDGM Discrete Holographic Principle: Tensor Network Realization of Hyperbolic Geometry, the RT Formula, and Boundary Conformal Field Theory

Changwu Wang

This project aims to construct a rigorous, computable, and testable discrete holographic duality model within the CDGM framework. Based on the discretization of the {5,4} tiling of the two-dimensional hyperbolic plane, the bulk network is exactly mapped to a multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) tensor network on the boundary, with explicit constructions of isometry tensors and disentanglers. Anticipated results include: the entanglement entropy of a boundary region satisfies the discrete RT formula with a relative error less than 0.5% in the thermodynamic limit; the boundary two-point correlation function exhibits power-law decay with a scaling exponent consistent with a free scalar conformal field theory. This preregistration establishes a timestamped record of the research plan; full derivations and numerical details will be presented in subsequent publications.

Entanglement scaling behaviors of free fermions on hyperbolic lattices

Xiang-You Huang, Yao Zhou, Peng Ye

Recently, tight-binding models on hyperbolic lattices (discretized anti–de Sitter space) have gained significant attention, leading to hyperbolic band theory and non-Abelian Bloch states. In this paper, we investigate these quantum systems from the perspective of quantum information, focusing particularly on the scaling of entanglement entropy (EE) that has been regarded as a powerful quantum-information probe into exotic phases of matter. It is known that on a d -dimensional translation-invariant Euclidean lattice, the EE of band insulators scales as an area law ( ∼ L d − 1 , where L is the linear size of the boundary between two subsystems). Meanwhile, the EE of metals [with a finite density of state (DOS)] scales as the renowned Gioev-Klich-Widom scaling law ( ∼ L d − 1 ln L ). The appearance of logarithmic divergence, as well as the analytic form of the coefficient c , is mathematically controlled by the Widom conjecture of asymptotic behavior of Toeplitz matrices and can be physically understood via the Swingle's argument. However, the hyperbolic lattice, which generalizes translational symmetry, results in the inapplicability of these analytic approaches and the potential nontrivial behavior of the EE. Here we make an initial attempt through numerical simulation. Remarkably, we find that both cases adhere to the area law, indicating the effect of background hyperbolic geometry that influences quantum entanglement. To achieve the results, we first apply the vertex-inflation method to generate a hyperbolic lattice on the Poincaré disk, and then apply the Haydock recursion method to compute the DOS. Finally, we study the scaling of the EE for different bipartitions via exact diagonalization and perform finite-size scaling. We also investigate how the coefficient of the area law is correlated to the bulk gap in the gapped case and to the DOS in the gapless case, respectively. Future directions are discussed.

Central charges of aperiodic holographic tensor-network models

A. Jahn, Zoltán Zimborás, Jens Eisert

Central to the AdS/CFT correspondence is a precise relationship between the curvature of an anti--de Sitter (AdS) space-time and the central charge of the dual conformal field theory (CFT) on its boundary. Our work shows that such a relationship can also be established for tensor network models of AdS/CFT based on regular bulk geometries, leading to an analytical form of the maximal central charges exhibited by the boundary states. We identify a class of tensors based on Majorana dimer states that saturate these bounds in the large curvature limit, while also realizing perfect and block-perfect holographic quantum error correcting codes. Furthermore, the renormalization group description of the resulting model is shown to be analogous to the strong disorder renormalization group, thus giving an example of an exact quantum error correcting code that gives rise to a well-understood critical system. These systems exhibit a large range of fractional central charges, tunable by the choice of bulk tiling. Our approach thus provides a precise physical interpretation of tensor network models on regular hyperbolic geometries and establishes quantitative connections to a wide range of existing models.

Entanglement entropy in aperiodic singlet phases

Róbert Juhász, Zoltán Zimborás

We study the average entanglement entropy of blocks of contiguous spins in aperiodic XXZ chains which possess an aperiodic singlet phase at least in a certain limit of the coupling ratios. In this phase, where the ground state constructed by a real space renormalization group method consists (asymptotically) of independent singlet pairs, the average entanglement entropy is found to be a piecewise linear function of the block size. The enveloping curve of this function is growing logarithmically with the block size, with an effective central charge in front of the logarithm which is characteristic for the underlying aperiodic sequence. The aperiodic sequence producing the largest effective central charge is identified, and the latter is found to exceed the central charge of the corresponding homogeneous model. For marginal aperiodic modulations, numerical investigations performed for the XX model show a logarithmic dependence, as well, with an effective central charge varying continuously with the coupling ratio.
