Abstract

Quantum sensing improves the accuracy of measurements of relevant parameters by exploiting the unique properties of quantum systems. The divergent susceptibility of physical systems near a critical point for quantum phase transition enables criticality-enhanced quantum sensing. The quantum Rabi model (QRM), composed of a single qubit coupled to a single bosonic field, represents a good candidate for realizing such critical enhancement for its simplicity, but it is experimentally challenging to achieve the ultrastrong qubit-field coupling required to realize the critical phenomena. In this work, we explore an alternative to construct the analog of the QRM for the sensing, exploiting the criticality appearing in the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model whose bosonic field is parametrically driven, not necessitating the ultrastrong coupling condition, thus to some extent relaxing the requirement for practical implementation.

Enhancing light-matter coupling for exploring chaos in the quantum Rabi model

Yan-Song Hu, Yuan Qiu, Ye-Hong Chen +2 more

Accessing chaos in the quantum Rabi model (QRM) usually requires operating far from resonance, combined with ultra- or deep-strong light-matter coupling. This makes direct experiments challenging. In this manuscript, we propose a solution to this challenge by employing an anti-squeezing transformation to the bosonic field. Specifically, we demonstrate that this transformation maps a weakly coupled, two-photon driven Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM) to an effective deep-strong-coupling QRM in the squeezed-light frame. Using out-of-time-order correlator, Husimi distribution, and linear entanglement entropy, we numerically probe chaos in this coupling-enhanced platform and observe the similar chaotic phenomena as in the ideal QRM. We also find the coupling-enhanced model can drive the system deeper into the chaotic regime. This establishes coupling-enhanced method as a practical approach to study QRM chaos without requiring intrinsic ultra-strong coupling.

Critical Sensing with a Single Bosonic Mode Without Boson–Boson Interactions

Ken Chen, Jiahao Lu, Xin Zhu +4 more

Abstract Critical phenomena of quantum systems are useful for enhancement of quantum sensing. However, experimental realizations of criticality enhancement are confined to very few systems, owing to the stringent requirements, including the thermodynamical or scaling limit, and fine control of interacting quantum subsystems or particles. Here, a simple critical quantum sensing scheme is proposed that requires neither of these conditions. The critical system is realized with a single parametrically‐driven bosonic mode involving many non‐interacting bosons. The quantum Fisher information is calculated, which confirms the criticality‐enabled enhancement. The response of one of the quadratures to the variation of the control parameter is further detailed. The numerical results reveal that its inverted variance exhibits a diverging behavior at the critical point. Based on the presently available control techniques of parametric driving, it is expected that scheme can be realized in different systems, e.g., ion traps and superconducting circuits.

Quantum Phase Transition in a Modified Jaynes-Cummings Model

Moorad Alexanian

We introduce a modified Jaynes-Cummings model with single-photon cavity radiation field but with the atomic system instead of exchanging a single photon as in the Jaynes-Cummings model, it exchanges instead a squeezed photon with squeezing parameter r. This allows us to interpolate between the Rabi model (r = ∞) and the Jaynes-Cummings model (r = 0) by varying r. The model exhibits a quantum phase transition. Accordingly, the quantum phase transition realized in the Rabi model, giving rise to superradiance, also occurs in the Jaynes-Cummings model.

Enhancement of quantum sensing in a cavity-optomechanical system around the quantum critical point

Shao-Bo Tang, Hao Qin, Bingbing Liu +5 more

The precision of quantum sensing could be improved by exploiting quantum phase transitions, where the physical quantity tends to diverge when the system approaches the quantum critical point. This critical enhancement phenomenon has been applied to the quantum Rabi model, showing a promising sensing enhancement without the need for complex initial state preparation. In this work, we present a quantum phase transition in the coupling cavity-mechanical oscillator system when the coupling strength crosses a critical point, determined by the effective detuning of the cavity and frequency of the mechanical mode. By utilizing this critical phenomenon, we obtain a prominent enhancement of quantum sensing, such as the position and momentum of the mechanical oscillator. This result provides an alternative method to enhance the quantum sensing of some physical quantities, such as mass, charge, and weak force, in a large mass system.

Ultrastrong Jaynes-Cummings model

Jin‐Feng Huang, Jie‐Qiao Liao, Le‐Man Kuang

We propose a reliable scheme to realize the ultrastrong Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model by simultaneously modulating the resonance frequencies of the two-level system and the bosonic mode in the ultrastrong quantum Rabi model. We find that in both the high- and low-frequency modulation regimes, the counter-rotating terms can be completely suppressed without reducing the coupling strength of the rotating-wave terms, and hence the ultrastrong JC Hamiltonian is achieved. The ultrastrong JC interaction can not only be used to implement ultrafast quantum operations such as ultrafast quantum state transfer and quantum logic gates but also will open up a new route to the demonstration of quantum phase transition associated with the JC Hamiltonian across the deep-strong-coupling point. Some discussions on the experimental implementation of this scheme with circuit-QED systems are presented.

Critical Quantum Metrology in the Non-Linear Quantum Rabi Model

Zu‐Jian Ying, Simone Felicetti, Gang Liu +1 more

The quantum Rabi model (QRM) with linear coupling between light mode and qubit exhibits the analog of a second-order phase transition for vanishing mode frequency which allows for criticality-enhanced quantum metrology in a few-body system. We show that the QRM including a nonlinear coupling term exhibits much higher measurement precisions due to its first-order-like phase transition at finite frequency, avoiding the detrimental slowing-down effect close to the critical point of the linear QRM. When a bias term is added to the Hamiltonian, the system can be used as a fluxmeter or magnetometer if implemented in circuit QED platforms.
