Abstract

We present a class of exactly solvable tri-junctions of one- and two-dimensional spin systems. Based on the geometric criterion for solvability, we clarify the sufficient condition for the junctions so that the spin Hamiltonian becomes equivalent to Majorana quadratic forms. Then we examine spin tri-junctions using the obtained solvable models. We consider the transverse magnetic field Ising spin chains and reveal how Majorana zero modes appear at the tri-junctions of the chains. Local terms of the tri-junction crucially affect the appearance of Majorna zero modes, and the tri-junction may support Majorana zero mode even if the bulk spin chains do not have Majorana end states. We also examine tri-junctions of two-dimensional SO(5)-spin lattices and discuss Majorana fermions along the junctions.

Stevens operator class of exactly solvable one-dimensional spin models

Andrei A. Zvyagin, Victor V. Slavin

The new class of exactly solvable models of one-dimensional spin chains is found. Interactions of spins with crystalline electric fields (CEF) and spin-spin coupling between neighboring sites are taken into account for those models. Spin-spin coupling includes higher-order spin operators (the Stevens operators) and describes the interaction between z th components of the spins. We show that essential parts of the Hamiltonians of these models can be written in terms of exactly solvable transverse field Ising model (TFIM), in which certain combinations of the parameters of spin-spin interactions play the role of the TFIM exchange constant, and components of the CEFs play the role of external transverse magnetic field of the TFIM. The obtained results are valid for any values of spin (or total moments for rare-earth ions) and for the wide class of CEFs. The requirement for the exact solvability is that the space of single spin states should be split by the CEF into the subspaces with dimensions ≤ 2 (i.e., the only singlets and doublets are allowed). Cases of integer and half-integer spins are considered. For finite-size chains with integer spins and open ends we show numerically that energy spectra always contain the states whose energies do not depend on the CEF (the magnetic field for the TFIM). The energies (per spin) of these states decay as L − 1 , where L is the chain length. This behavior qualitatively distinguishes these states from known Majorana edge states and strong zero modes, where the energy decreases exponentially in L .

Geometric criterion for solvability of lattice spin systems

Masahiro Ogura, Yukihisa Imamura, Naruhiko Kameyama +2 more

We present a simple criterion for solvability of lattice spin systems on the basis of graph theory and simplicial homology. The lattice systems satisfy algebras with graphical representations. It is shown that the null spaces of adjacency matrices of the graphs provide conserved quantities of the systems. Furthermore, when the graphs belong to a class of simplicial complexes, the Hamiltonians are found to be mapped to bilinear forms of Majorana fermions, from which the full spectra of the systems are obtained. In the latter situation, we find a relation between conserved quantities and the first homology group of the graph, and the relation enables us to interpret the conserved quantities as flux excitations of the systems. The validity of our theory is confirmed in several known solvable spin systems including the one-dimensional (1D) transverse-field Ising chain, the 2D Kitaev honeycomb model, and the 3D diamond lattice model. We also present new solvable models on a 1D trijunction, 2D and 3D fractal lattices, and the 3D cubic lattice.

Exact zero modes in interacting Majorana X - and Y -junctions

Bowy La Rivière, Rik Mulder, Natalia Chepiga

Abstract We report the emergence of exact zero modes (EZMs) in junctions of two, three and four short interacting Majorana wires, equivalent to a chain with an impurity bond, Y - and X - junctions respectively. These EZMs arise from incommensurate short-range correlations and manifest as exact level crossings between in-gap states upon continuously tuning the interaction strength. In a junction of two chains the EZMs and parity switching appear as soon as the coupling across a junction is positive. This conclusion has a broad implication including the existence of EZM in quench- disordered systems. Remarkably, for junctions with multiple chains the in-gap states group up into sets of parity pairs–pairs of quasi-degenerate states with opposite parity attributed to the effective interaction of the outer edges of the junction. In the Y -junction with four in-gap states, we report EZMs not only within each parity pair but also between them. We demonstrate that this is attributed to an additional Majorana fermion localized at the center of the junction and protected by fermion parity symmetry. Therefore, coupling between the Majorana fermions at the outer edges of the junction is mediated by the central one. We argue that this is a generic feature of junctions with an odd number of arms. Surprisingly, in the X -junction we identify eight in-gap states arising from two Majorana degrees of freedom localized at the junction center. In contrast to the Y -junction, however, we show that the emergence of Majorana modes at the center of the X -junction is not topologically protected. As a result, the system parameters can be tuned such that the Majorana modes are expelled from the junction center and remain localized exclusively at the outer edges of the system.

Majorana Fermion Realization of a Two-Channel Kondo Effect in a Junction of Three Quantum Ising Chains

Alexei M. Tsvelik

It is shown that a junction of three critical quantum Ising chains (Delta junction) can be described as a two-channel Kondo model with a spin S=1/2 localized at the junction, which is composed of the respective Ising, zero energy boundary Majorana modes.

Majorana Edge States and Braiding in an Exactly Solvable One-dimensional Spin Model

Zhao-Yang Dong, Jianxin Li

We derive an exactly solvable one-dimensional (1D) spin model from the three-band Hubbard model with a strong spin-orbit coupling by introducing U(1) gauge fields to the isospin states. We find that it has a topological nontrivial phase characterized by Majorana end modes which are protected by a new Z_2 topological invariant related to the parity of the lattice sites (odd or even number of sites) in the spin chain. With the protection of this Z_2 topological invariant, a novel braiding of two Majorana edge states in this strictly geometric 1D chain is realized. We also discuss the possible realization of the gauge fields.

Majorana fermions in the nonuniform Ising-Kitaev chain : exact solution

B. N. Narozhny

A quantum computer based on Majorana qubits would contain a large number of zero-energy Majorana states. This system can be modelled as a connected network of the Ising-Kitaev chains alternating the “trivial” and “topological” regions, with the zero-energy Majorana fermions localized at their interfaces. The low-energy sector of the theory describing such a network can be formulated in terms of leading-order couplings between the Majorana zero modes. I consider a minimal model exhibiting effective couplings between four Majorana zero modes – the nonuniform Ising-Kitaev chain, containing two “topological” regions separated by a “trivial” region. Solving the model exactly, I show that for generic values of the model parameters the four zero modes are localized at the four interface points of the chain. In the special case where additional inversion symmetry is present, the Majorana zero modes are “delocalized” between two interface points. In both cases, the low-energy sector of the theory can be formulated in terms of the localized Majorana fermions, but the couplings between some of them are independent of their respective separations: the exact solution does not support the “nearest-neighbor” form of the effective low-energy Hamiltonian.
