Automated quantum software engineering

Aritra Sarkar

Abstract As bigger quantum processors with hundreds of qubits become increasingly available, the potential for quantum computing to solve problems intractable for classical computers is becoming more tangible. Designing efficient quantum algorithms and software in tandem is key to achieving quantum advantage. Quantum software engineering is challenging due to the unique counterintuitive nature of quantum logic. Moreover, with larger quantum systems, traditional programming using quantum assembly language and qubit-level reasoning is becoming infeasible. Automated Quantum Software Engineering (AQSE) can help to reduce the barrier to entry, speed up development, reduce errors, and improve the efficiency of quantum software. This article elucidates the motivation to research AQSE (why), a precise description of such a framework (what), and reflections on components that are required for implementing it (how).

Quantum Software Engineering 101

Shaukat Ali

Quantum Software Engineering (QSE) focuses on developing cost-effective quantum software for quantum computers. It is a relatively new area of research, with current studies primarily aimed at designing, developing, testing, and maintaining quantum software. Interest in QSE has been steadily increasing; thus, introducing this topic to the ICSE conference audience will further engage young researchers, senior researchers, and practitioners interested in QSE. This technical briefing will introduce quantum computing, followed by the QSE overview. It will then explore QSE in detail from various perspectives, including quantum software requirements engineering, modeling, coding, testing, and debugging. Overall, this technical briefing aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of QSE as well as future research directions.

Quantum Software: The Brain of Quantum — Guest Editor’s Introduction

Iaakov Exman

Quantum Software, its engineering and its applications are becoming more and more indispensable components of the current knowledge baggage of researchers and industrial professionals. Given the continuous accelerating developments of Quantum Computing, and the vastness of available knowledge, one needs efficient methods to dedicate the limited available personal time to the correct choice of selective information. This Special Issue on “Quantum Computing and Software Engineering” offers a small, but diverse set of papers covering theoretical, practical software system design and a pragmatic survey of Quantum Software Engineering, being a map pointing to references of relevance, aiming to answer the issue of choice of selective information.

Towards Process Centered Architecting for Quantum Software Systems

Aakash Ahmad, Arif Ali Khan, Muhammad Waseem +2 more

Quantum Software Engineering (QSE) is a recent trend - focused on unifying the principles of quantum mechanics and practices of software engineering - to design, develop, validate, and evolve quantum age software systems and applications. Software architecture for quantum computing (a.k. a. quantum software architectures (QSA)) supports the design, development, and maintenance etc. phases of quantum software systems using architectural components and connectors. QSA can enable quantum software designers and developers to map the operations of Qubits to architectural components and connectors for implementing quantum software. This research aims to explore the role of QSAs by investigating (i) architectural process having architecting activities, and (ii) human roles that can exploit available tools to automate and customise architecture-centric implementation of quantum software. Results of this research can facilitate knowledge transfer, enabling researchers and practitioners, to address challenges of architecture-centric implementation of quantum software systems.

Automated Quantum Software and AI Engineering

Nazanin Siavash, Armin Moin

In this paper, we conduct a systematic literature review of (semi-) automated approaches to Quantum Software Engineering (QSE) and Quantum Artificial Intelligence (QAI). Prior work in the literature indicated that both Software Engineering (SE) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) practices may become more efficient by using (semi-) automated approaches. This also holds in the Quantum Computing (QC), Quantum Information Science (QIS), and Quantum Engineering (QE) world, as well as in hybrid quantum-classical applications. In fact, automation is even more crucial in such cases since there is a limited number of developers and AI experts (e.g., data scientists) who possess the required knowledge and skills in QC. Moreover, in hybrid setups, automation may help decide what part of the application should be deployed on quantum hardware and on which of the available quantum platforms, if applicable. This can be a significant help to achieve productivity leap and efficiency even for subject matter experts. Unlike prior literature reviews and surveys, this work focuses on automation in SE and AI for quantum and hybrid quantum-classical applications and identifies the recent trends and future directions through a systematic literature review. We are interested in methods and techniques that can enable a broader development and deployment of quantum and hybrid AI-enabled software systems.
