Abstract

Abstract We consider two necessary and sufficient conditions for macrorealism recently appeared in the literature, known as no-signaling-in-time and arrow-of-time conditions, respectively, and study them in the context of neutrino flavor transitions, within both the plane wave description and the wave packet approach. We then compare the outcome of the above investigation with the implication of various formulations of Leggett–Garg inequalities. In particular, we show that the fulfillment of the addressed conditions for macrorealism in neutrino oscillations implies the fulfillment of the Leggett–Garg inequalities, whereas the converse is not true. Finally, in the framework of wave packet approach, we also prove that, for distances longer than the coherence length, the no-signaling-in-time condition is always violated whilst the Leggett–Garg inequalities are not.

No-signaling-in-time condition for three-flavor neutrino oscillations

Massimo Blasone, Fabrizio Illuminati, Luciano Petruzziello +2 more

Macrorealism is a fundamental concept in quantum foundations, capturing basic features of our everyday experience. Among the main tools introduced to test violations of macrorealism are the Leggett-Garg inequalities. These inequalities provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a certain data set including the correlators measured in a number of different experimental runs (weak version of macrorealism). Leggett-Garg inequalities have proved useful for detecting violations of macrorealism in neutrino oscillation experiments. However, it is interesting to investigate a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for strong macrorealism - no-signaling-in-time and arrow-of-time conditions - in order to obtain a more complete characterization of macrorealism in the context of neutrino oscillations. In particular, here we extend previous study of the no-signaling-in-time condition to the case of three-flavor neutrino oscillations, including the CP-violating phase of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix.

Revealing violations of macrorealism in flavor oscillations: Leggett-Garg inequalities and no-signaling-in-time conditions

Massimo Blasone A, Fabrizio Illuminati, Luciano Petruzziello +2 more

Abstract. We briefly review recent developments in the study of the quantum nature of flavor mixing; in particular, the attention will be devoted to neutrino and neutral meson oscillations. We employ Leggett-Garg type inequalities and no-signaling-in-time conditions to probe the intrinsic quantumness of such a physical manifestation, showing how the analysis is not affected by the wave-packet spreading (for neutrinos) and the intrinsic particle instability (for mesons).

Tests of macrorealism in meson oscillation physics

Massimo Blasone A, Fabrizio Illuminati, Luciano Petruzziello +2 more

Macrorealism formalizes the seemingly intuitive notion that, in contrast with the principles of quantum mechanics, a physical system can be in a definite state at any given time and moreover its dynamical evolution is independent of the measurements performed on it. In this study, we carry out a comparative analysis between three-time Leggett--Garg-type inequalities and the conditions of no-signaling-in-time and arrow-of-time for macrorealism within the context of meson oscillations. Our findings indicate that, under given initial conditions, no violations of Leggett--Garg inequalities are observed. However, no-signaling-in-time conditions are found to be violated, thereby revealing the impossibility of applying a macrorealistic description to the physics of meson oscillations.

Condition for macroscopic realism beyond the Leggett-Garg inequalities

Johannes Kofler, Časlav Brukner

In 1985, Leggett and Garg put forward the concept of macroscopic realism (macrorealism) and, in analogy to Bell's theorem, derived a necessary condition in terms of inequalities, which are now known as the Leggett-Garg inequalities. In this paper, we discuss another necessary condition called no-signaling in time. It solely bases on comparing the probability distribution for a macrovariable at some time for the cases where previously a measurement has or has not been performed. Although the concept is analogous to the no-signaling condition in the case of Bell tests, it can be violated according to quantum mechanical predictions even in situations where no violation of Leggett-Garg inequalities is possible.

Various formulations of inequivalent Leggett–Garg inequalities

Swati Kumari, A. K. Pan

Abstract In two-party, two-input and two-output measurement scenario only relevant Bell’s inequality is the Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt (CHSH) form. They also provide the necessary and sufficient conditions (NSCs) for local realism. Any other form, such as, Clauser–Horne and Wigner forms reduce to the CHSH one. The standard Leggett–Garg inequalities, proposed for testing incompatibility between macrorealism and quantum theory, are often considered to be the temporal analog of CHSH inequalities. However, they do not provide the NSCs for macrorealism. There is thus scope of formulating new macrorealist inequalities inequivalent and stronger than the standard Leggett–Garg inequalities. In this paper, we propose two different classes of macrorealistic inequalities. A class of inequalities which are equivalent to the standard ones in macrorealist model but inequivalent and stronger in quantum theory, and the other class of inequalities are inequivalent to the all the other formulations of Leggett–Garg inequalities both in macrorealist model and in quantum theory. The latter class of macrorealist inequalities reveals the incompatibility between macrorealism and quantum theory for specific cases even when any other formulation of Leggett–Garg inequalities fails to do so. We extend the formulations of inequivalent Leggett–Garg inequalities to the four-time and two-time measurement scenarios. Further, we provide a brief discussion about the alternative formulation of macrorealism known as the no-signaling in time (NSIT) conditions.

Lüders Bounds of Leggett–Garg Inequalities, PT$\mathcal {PT}$‐ Symmetric Evolution and Arrow‐of‐Time

Asmita Kumari, A. K. Pan

Abstract Leggett–Garg inequalities (LGIs) test the incompatibility between the notion of macrorealism and quantum theory. For unitary dynamics, the optimal quantum violation of a Leggett–Garg inequality is constrained by the Lüders bound. However, the LGIs do not provide the necessary and sufficient condition of macrorealism. A suitably formulated set of no‐signaling in time conditions along with the arrow‐of‐time condition provides the same. In this paper, two formulations in the three‐time Leggett–Garg scenario, are studied namely, the standard LGIs and the recently formulated variant of LGIs when the system evolves under PT‐symmetric Hamiltonian. It is first demonstrated that the quantum violations of both forms of LGIs exceed their respective Lüders bounds and can even reach their algebraic maximum. It is further shown that for the case of standard Leggett–Garg inequality, the violation of Lüders bound can be obtained when both no‐signaling in time and arrow‐of‐time conditions are violated. Interestingly, for the case of a variant of LGIs, for suitable choices of relevant parameters, the quantum violation can even be obtained when only the arrow‐of‐time is violated. However, all no‐signaling in time conditions are satisfied. Such a feature is hitherto unexplored.
