The Quantum Mechanical Problem of a Particle on a Ring with Delta Well

Abstract

The problem of a spin-free electron with mass $m$, charge $e$ confined onto a ring of radius $R_0$ and with an attractive Dirac delta potential with scaling factor (depth) $κ$ in non-relativistic theory has closed form analytical solutions. The single bound state function is of the form of a hyperbolic cosine that however contains a parameter $d>0$ which is the single positive real solution of the transcendental equation $\coth(d) = λd$ for non zero real $λ=\frac{2}{πκ}$. The energy eigenvalue of the bound state $\varepsilon=-\frac{d^2}{2π^2}\approx \frac{q e m R_0}{2 \hbar^2}$. In addition a discretly infinite set of unbounded solutions exists, formally these solutions are obtained from the terms for the bound solution by substituting $d \to i d $ yielding $\cot(d) = λd$ as characteristic equation with the corresponding set of solutions $d_k, k\in\mathbb{N}$, the respective state functions can be obtained via $\cosh(x)\overset{x \to i x}{\longrightarrow}\cos(x)$.

Quantum solutions for the delta ring and delta shell

Luis F. Castillo-Sánchez, Julio C. Gutiérrez-Vega

The quantum description of a free particle subject to a delta circular ring and a delta spherical shell is studied. We determine the bound eigenstates and energy spectra for different angular momentum states. The normalization constants of the bound states and the transmission and reflection coefficients of the scattering states are calculated in closed form. The ground state of the delta ring is always present regardless of the potential strength. In contrast, the delta shell requires a threshold of the delta strength for the first eigenstate to appear. For the ring and the shell, the wave functions tend to be degenerate at high energies, and the effect of angular momentum on the wave functions becomes negligible. This work generalizes the standard problem of the one-dimensional delta potential studied in textbooks.

A Quantum Physics Jeopardy Problem of a One-Bound-State Double Dirac Delta Potential with a Centrifugal, Angular-Momentum-Like Tail

Spiros Konstantogiannis

Starting from a simple, one-parameter, symmetric wave function, we derive an attractive double Dirac delta potential with a centrifugal, angular-momentum-like tale, which has only one bound state, the energy of which can be set to zero.

Approximate $\kappa$ -state solutions of the Dirac equation in spatially dependent mass for the Eckart potential including the Yukawa tensor interaction

Sameer M. Ikhdair

We investigate the analytical approximation to arbitrary -state solutions of the Dirac equation with the position-dependent mass particle in the Eckart potential including the Yukawa tensor interaction in the framework of a parametric Nikiforov–Uvarov method. By taking a proper approximation to deal with the centrifugal term, the analytical relativistic energy eigenvalues and the corresponding normalized two-spinor components of the wave function are obtained in closed form. The relativistic and non-relativistic bound state solutions for some special cases, such as the Hulthén potential and the generalized Morse potential, are easily obtained from our general solution.

Renormalization of the singular attractive 1∕r4 potential

Mary Alberg, Michel Bawin, Fabian Brau

We study the radial Schr\"odinger equation for a particle of mass $m$ in the field of a singular attractive ${g}^{2}∕{r}^{4}$ potential with particular emphasis on the bound-states problem. Using the regularization method of Beane et al. [Phys. Rev. A 64, 042103 (2001)], we solve analytically the corresponding ``renormalization-group flow'' equation. We find in agreement with previous studies that its solution exhibits a limit cycle behavior and has infinitely many branches. We show that a continuous choice for the solution corresponds to a given fixed number of bound states and to low-energy phase shifts that vary continuously with energy. We study in detail the connection between this regularization method and a conventional method modifying the short-range part of the potential with an infinitely repulsive hard core. We show that both methods yield bound-states results in close agreement even though the regularization method of Beane et al. does not include explicitly any new scale in the problem. We further illustrate the use of the regularization method in the computation of electron bound states in the field of neutral polarizable molecules without dipole moment. We find the binding energy of $s$-wave polarization bound electrons in the field of ${\mathrm{C}}_{60}$ molecules to be 17 meV for a scattering length corresponding to a hard-core radius of the size of the molecule radius $(\ensuremath{\sim}3.37\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{\AA{}})$. This result can be further compared with recent two-parameter fits using the Lennard-Jones potential yielding binding energies ranging from 3 to 25 meV.

The Dirac equation with position-dependent mass for the modified Pschl-Teller potential and its solution

Yasuk, Bahar

The Dirac-modified Poschl-Teller problem with position dependent mass is investigated within the framework of the asymptotic iteration method in N dimensions. Any -state solutions are obtained by using the exponential approximation for the centrifugal term. The energy eigenvalues and two-component spinor corresponding eigenfunctions are determined for different  screening parameters explicitly. The corresponding eigenfunctions obtained in the form of hypergeometric functions are normalized and plotted for different quantum states. Effects on modified Poschl-Teller potential, bound state energy eigenvalues and normalized corresponding eigenfunctions of the  screening parameters are investigated and its results are discussed.    Key words: Dirac equation, position-dependent mass (PDM), Poschl-Teller (PT) potential, asymptotic iteration method, bound state.
