Abstract

We present a Lie algebraic approach to a Hamiltonian class covering driven, parametric quantum harmonic oscillators where the parameter set-mass, frequency, driving strength, and parametric pumping-is time-dependent. Our unitary-transformation-based approach provides a solution to our general quadratic time-dependent quantum harmonic model. As an example, we show an analytic solution to the periodically driven quantum harmonic oscillator without the rotating wave approximation; it works for any given detuning and coupling strength regime. For the sake of validation, we provide an analytic solution to the historical Caldirola-Kanai quantum harmonic oscillator and show that there exists a unitary transformation within our framework that takes a generalized version of it onto the Paul trap Hamiltonian. In addition, we show how our approach provides the dynamics of generalized models whose Schrödinger equation becomes numerically unstable in the laboratory frame.

Unitary relations in time-dependent harmonic oscillators

Dae-Yup Song

For a harmonic oscillator with time-dependent (positive) mass and frequency, a unitary operator is shown to transform the quantum states of the system to those of a harmonic oscillator system of unit mass and time-dependent frequency, as well as operators. For a driven harmonic oscillator, a unitary transformation which relates the driven system and a system of the same mass and frequency without a driving force is given, as a generalization of previous results, in terms of the solution of classical equation of motion of the driven system. Thus transformations give a simple way of finding exact wavefunctions of a driven harmonic oscillator system, provided the quantum states of the corresponding system of unit mass are given.

Exact quantum states of a general time-dependent quadratic system from classical action

Dae-Yup Song

A generalization of a driven harmonic oscillator with time-dependent mass and frequency, by adding total time-derivative terms to the Lagrangian, is considered. The generalization, which gives a general quadratic Hamiltonian system, does not change the classical equation of motion. Based on the observation by Feynman and Hibbs, the propagators (kernels) of the systems are calculated from the classical action, in terms of solutions of the classical equation of motion: two homogeneous solutions and one particular solution. The kernels are then used to find wave functions that satisfy the Schr\"odinger equation. One of the wave functions is shown to be that of a Gaussian pure state. In every case considered, we prove that the kernel does not depend on the way of choosing the classical solutions, while the wave functions depend on the choice. The generalization, which gives a rather complicated quadratic Hamiltonian, is simply interpreted as applying unitary transformation to the driven harmonic oscillator system in the Hamiltonian formulation.

Squeezing and resonance in a generalized Caldirola-Kanai type quantum parametric oscillator

Şirin A. Büyükaşık

The evolution operator of a Caldirola-Kanai type quantum parametric oscillator with a generalized quadratic Hamiltonian is obtained using the Wei-Norman Lie algebraic approach, and time evolution of the eigenstates of a harmonic oscillator and Glauber coherent states is found explicitly. Behavior of this oscillator is investigated under the influence of the external mixed term B(t)(q^p^+p^q^)/2, which affects the squeezing properties of the wave packets, and linear terms D0(t)q^, E0(t)p^ responsible for their displacement in time. According to this, we construct all exact quantum models with different parameters B(t), for which the structure of the Caldirola-Kanai oscillator in position space is preserved. Then, for each model, we obtain explicit solutions and analyze the squeezing and displacement properties of the wave packets according to the frequency modification by B(t) and periodic forces in the corresponding classical equation of motion.

Continuous-time quantum harmonic oscillator state engineering

E. García Herrera, F. Torres-Leal, B. M. Rodríguez-Lara

Abstract The center of mass motion of trapped ions and neutral atoms is suitable for approximation by a time-dependent driven quantum harmonic oscillator whose frequency and driving strength may be controlled with high precision. We show the time evolution for these systems with continuous differentiable time-dependent parameters in terms of the three basic operations provided by its underlying symmetry, rotation, displacement, and squeezing, using a Lie algebraic approach. Our factorization of the dynamics allows for the intuitive construction of protocols for state engineering, for example, creating and removing displacement and squeezing, as well as their combinations, optimizing squeezing, or more complex protocols that work for slow and fast rates of change in the oscillator parameters.

Quantum behavior of general time-dependent quadratic systems linearly coupled to a bath

Jason Twamley

In this paper we solve for the quantum propagator of a general time-dependent system quadratic in both position and momentum, linearly coupled to an infinite bath of harmonic oscillators. We work in the regime where the quantum optical master equation is valid. We map this master equation to a Schr\"odinger equation on super-Hilbert space and utilize Lie-algebraic techniques to solve for the dynamics in this space. We then map back to the original Hilbert space to obtain the solution of the quantum dynamics. The Lie-algebraic techniques used are preferable to the standard Wei-Norman methods in that only coupled systems of first-order ordinary differential equations and purely algebraic equations need only be solved. We look at two examples.

Harmonic oscillators coupled time-dependent

Diego Ximenes Macedo

In this work we present the classical and quantum solutions of time-dependent coupled harmonic oscillators. In these systems the masses, frequencies and coupling parameter (k) are functions of time. Four systems are investigated. To obtain the classical solutions we use a coordinate and momentum transformations along with a canonical transformation to write the original Hamiltonian as the sum of two Hamiltonians of uncoupled harmonic oscillators with modified time-dependent frequencies and unitary masses. We find the analytical expression for position and velocity of each oscillator of the systems. To obtain the exact quantum solutions we use a unitary transformation and the Lewis and Riesenfeld invariant method. The wave functions obtained are written in terms of a c-number quantity () which is solution of the Milne-Pinney equation. For each system we solve the respective Milne-Pinney equation and discuss how the quantum fluctuations and the uncertainty product evolve with time.
