A large class of gapped phases of matter can be described by topological finite group gauge theories. In this paper, we show how such gauge theories possess a higher-group global symmetry, which we study in detail. We derive the d d -group global symmetry and its ’t Hooft anomaly for topological finite group gauge theories in (d+1) ( d + 1 ) space-time dimensions, including non-Abelian gauge groups and Dijkgraaf-Witten twists. We focus on the 1-form symmetry generated by invertible (Abelian) magnetic defects and the higher-form symmetries generated by invertible topological defects decorated with lower dimensional gauged symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. We show that due to a generalization of the Witten effect and charge-flux attachment, the 1-form symmetry generated by the magnetic defects mixes with other symmetries into a higher group. We describe such higher-group symmetry in various lattice model examples. We discuss several applications, including the classification of fermionic SPT phases in (3+1)D for general fermionic symmetry groups, where we also derive a simpler formula for the [O_5] ∈ H^5(BG, U(1)) [ O 5 ] ∈ H 5 ( B G , U ( 1 ) ) obstruction that has appeared in prior work. We also show how the d d -group symmetry is related to fault-tolerant non-Pauli logical gates and a refined Clifford hierarchy in stabilizer codes. We discover new logical gates in stabilizer codes using the d d -group symmetry, such as a controlled Z gate in the (3+1) D \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 toric code.

(3+1)D topological phases of matter can host a broad class of non-trivial topological defects of codimension-1, 2, and 3, of which the well-known point charges and flux loops are special cases. The complete algebraic structure of these defects defines a higher category, and can be viewed as an emergent higher symmetry. This plays a crucial role both in the classification of phases of matter and the possible fault-tolerant logical operations in topological quantum error-correcting codes. In this paper, we study several examples of such higher codimension defects from distinct perspectives. We mainly study a class of invertible codimension-2 topological defects, which we refer to as twist strings. We provide a number of general constructions for twist strings, in terms of gauging lower dimensional invertible phases, layer constructions, and condensation defects. We study some special examples in the context of \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 gauge theory with fermionic charges, in \mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 × ℤ 2 gauge theory with bosonic charges, and also in non-Abelian discrete gauge theories based on dihedral ( D_n D n ) and alternating ( A_6 A 6 ) groups. The intersection between twist strings and Abelian flux loops sources Abelian point charges, which defines an H^4 H 4 cohomology class that characterizes part of an underlying 3-group symmetry of the topological order. The equations involving background gauge fields for the 3-group symmetry have been explicitly written down for various cases. We also study examples of twist strings interacting with non-Abelian flux loops (defining part of a non-invertible higher symmetry), examples of non-invertible codimension-2 defects, and examples of the interplay of codimension-2 defects with codimension-1 defects. We also find an example of geometric, not fully topological, twist strings in (3+1)D A_6 A 6 gauge theory.
Gauge theories are important descriptions for many physical phenomena and systems in quantum computation. Automorphism of gauge group naturally gives global symmetries of gauge theories. In this work we study such symmetries in gauge theories induced by automorphisms of the gauge group, when the gauge theories have nontrivial topological actions in different spacetime dimensions. We discover the automorphism symmetry can be extended, become a higher group symmetry, and/or become a non-invertible symmetry. We illustrate the discussion with various models in field theory and on the lattice. In particular, we use automorphism symmetry to construct new transversal non-Clifford logical gates in topological quantum codes. In particular, we show that 2+1d ZN qudit Clifford stabilizer models can implement non-Clifford transversal logical gate in the 4th level ZN qudit Clifford hierarchy for N≥3, extending the generalized Bravyi-König bound proposed in the companion paper [arXiv:2511.02900] for qubits.
A bstract We use the intrinsic one-form and two-form global symmetries of (3+1) d bosonic field theories to classify quantum phases enriched by ordinary (0-form) global symmetry. Different symmetry-enriched phases correspond to different ways of coupling the theory to the background gauge field of the ordinary symmetry. The input of the classification is the higher-form symmetries and a permutation action of the 0-form symmetry on the lines and surfaces of the theory. From these data we classify the couplings to the background gauge field by the 0-form symmetry defects constructed from the higher-form symmetry defects. For trivial two-form symmetry the classification coincides with the classification for symmetry fractionalizations in (2 + 1) d . We also provide a systematic method to obtain the symmetry protected topological phases that can be absorbed by the coupling, and we give the relative ’t Hooft anomaly for different couplings. We discuss several examples including the gapless pure U(1) gauge theory and the gapped Abelian finite group gauge theory. As an application, we discover a tension with a conjectured duality in (3 + 1) d for SU(2) gauge theory with two adjoint Weyl fermions.
We discuss the codimension-1 defects of (2+1)D bosonic topological phases, where the defects can support fermionic degrees of freedom. We refer to such defects as fermionic defects, and introduce a certain subclass of invertible fermionic defects called “gauged Gu-Wen SPT defects” that can shift self-statistics of anyons. We derive a canonical form of a general fermionic invertible defect, in terms of the fusion of a gauged Gu-Wen SPT defect and a bosonic invertible defect decoupled from fermions on the defect. We then derive the fusion rule of generic invertible fermionic defects. The gauged Gu-Wen SPT defects give rise to interesting logical gates of stabilizer codes in the presence of additional ancilla fermions. For example, we find a realization of the CZ logical gate on the (2+1)D \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 toric code stacked with a (2+1)D ancilla trivial atomic insulator. We also investigate a gapped fermionic interface between (2+1)D bosonic topological phases realized on the boundary of the (3+1)D Walker-Wang model. In that case, the gapped interface can shift the chiral central charge of the (2+1)D phase. Among these fermionic interfaces, we study an interesting example where the (3+1)D phase has a spatial reflection symmetry, and the fermionic interface is supported on a reflection plane that interpolates a (2+1)D surface topological order and its orientation-reversal. We construct a (3+1)D exactly solvable Hamiltonian realizing this setup, and find that the model generates the \mathbb{Z}_8 ℤ 8 classification of the (3+1)D invertible phase with spatial reflection symmetry and fermion parity on the reflection plane. We make contact with an effective field theory, known in literature as the exotic invertible phase with spacetime higher-group symmetry.
A fundamental problem in fault-tolerant quantum computation is the tradeoff between universality and dimensionality, exemplified by the the Bravyi-König bound for n-dimensional topological stabilizer codes. In this work, we extend topological Pauli stabilizer codes to a broad class of n-dimensional Clifford hierarchy stabilizer codes. These codes correspond to the (n+1)D Dijkgraaf-Witten gauge theories with non-Abelian topological order. We construct transversal non-Clifford gates through automorphism symmetries represented by cup products. In 2D, we obtain the first transversal non-Clifford logical gates including T and CS for Clifford stabilizer codes, using the automorphism of the twisted Z23 gauge theory (equivalent to D4 topological order). We also combine it with the just-in-time decoder to fault-tolerantly prepare the logical T magic state in O(d) rounds via code switching. In 3D, we construct a transversal logical T gate in a non-Clifford stabilizer code at the third level of the Clifford hierarchy, located on a tetrahedron corresponding to a twisted Z24 gauge theory. Our constructions surpass the Bravyi-König bound by achieving the logical gates in the (n+1)-th level of Clifford hierarchy in n spatial dimension.
Topological quantum field theory (TQFT) provides a unifying framework for describing topological phases of matter and for constructing quantum error-correcting codes, playing a central role across high-energy physics, condensed matter, and quantum information. A central challenge is to formulate topological order on lattices and to extract the properties of topological excitations from microscopic Hamiltonians. In this work, we construct new classes of lattice gauge theories as Pauli stabilizer models, realizing a wide range of TQFTs in general dimensions. We develop a lattice description of extended excitations and systematically determine their generalized statistics. Our main example is the (4+1)D fermionic-loop toric code, obtained by condensing the e2m2-loop in the (4+1)D Z4 toric code. We show that the loop excitation exhibits fermionic loop statistics: the 24-step loop-flipping process yields a phase of −1. Our Pauli stabilizer models realize all twisted 2-form gauge theories in (4+1)D, the higher-form Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFT classified by H5(B2G,U(1)). Beyond (4+1)D, the fermionic-loop toric codes form a family of Z2 topological orders in arbitrary dimensions, realized as explicit Pauli stabilizer codes using Z4 qudits. Finally, we develop a Pauli-based framework that defines generalized statistics for extended excitations in any dimension, yielding computable lattice unitary processes to detect nontrivial statistics. For example, we propose anyonic membrane statistics in (6+1)D, as well as fermionic membrane and volume statistics in arbitrary dimensions. We construct new families of Z2 topological orders: the fermionic-membrane toric code and the fermionic-volume toric code. In addition, we demonstrate that p-dimensional excitations in 2p+2 spatial dimensions can support anyonic p-brane statistics for only even p.
