Abstract

We investigate the relaxation dynamics of equal-time correlations in the antiferromagnetic phase of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain following a global quantum quench of the anisotropy parameter. We focus, in particular, on the relaxation dynamics starting from an initial N\'eel state. Using state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group simulations, the exact solution of an effective free-fermion model, and the quench-action approach within the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, we show that the late-time relaxation is characterized by a power-law decay $\ensuremath{\sim}{t}^{\ensuremath{-}3/2}$ independent of anisotropy. This is in contrast to the previously studied exponential decay of the antiferromagnetic order parameter. Remarkably, the effective model describes the numerical data extremely well even on a quantitative level if higher-order corrections to the leading asymptotic behavior are taken into account.

Relaxation after quantum quenches in the spin- 1 2 Heisenberg XXZ chain

Maurizio Fagotti, Mario Collura, Fabian H. L. Eßler +1 more

We consider the time evolution after quantum quenches in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg XXZ quantum spin chain with Ising-type anisotropy. The time evolution of short-distance spin-spin correlation functions is studied by numerical tensor network techniques for a variety of initial states, including N\'eel and Majumdar-Ghosh states and the ground state of the XXZ chain at large values of the anisotropy. The various correlators appear to approach stationary values, which are found to be in good agreement with the results of exact calculations of stationary expectation values in appropriate generalized Gibbs ensembles. In particular, our analysis shows how symmetries of the post-quench Hamiltonian that are broken by particular initial states are restored at late times.

Long time dynamics following a quench in an integrable quantum spin chain: Local versus nonlocal operators and effective thermal behavior

Davide Rossini, Sei Suzuki, Giuseppe Mussardo +2 more

We study the dynamics of the quantum Ising chain following a zero-temperature quench of the transverse field strength. Focusing on the behavior of two-point spin correlation functions, we show that the correlators of the order parameter display an effective asymptotic thermal behavior; i.e., they decay exponentially to zero with a phase coherence rate and a correlation length dictated by the equilibrium law with an effective temperature set by the energy of the initial state. On the contrary, the two-point correlation functions of the transverse magnetization or the density-of-kinks operator decay as a power law and do not exhibit thermal behavior. We argue that the different behavior is linked to the locality of the corresponding operator with respect to the quasiparticles of the model: nonlocal operators, such as the order parameter, behave thermally, while local ones do not. We study which features of the two-point correlators are a consequence of the integrability of the model by analyzing their robustness with respect to a sufficiently strong integrability-breaking term.

Relaxation of Antiferromagnetic Order in Spin- 1 / 2 Chains Following a Quantum Quench

Peter Barmettler, Matthias Punk, Vladimir Gritsev +2 more

We study the unitary time evolution of antiferromagnetic order in anisotropic Heisenberg chains that are initially prepared in a pure quantum state far from equilibrium. Our analysis indicates that the antiferromagnetic order imprinted in the initial state vanishes exponentially. Depending on the anisotropy parameter, oscillatory or nonoscillatory relaxation dynamics is observed. Furthermore, the corresponding relaxation time exhibits a minimum at the critical point, in contrast to the usual notion of critical slowing down, from which a maximum is expected.

Quantum quenches in the anisotropic spin-\frac{1}{2} Heisenberg chain: different approaches to many-body dynamics far from equilibrium

Peter Barmettler, Matthias Punk, Vladimir Gritsev +2 more

Recent experimental achievements in controlling ultracold gases in optical lattices open a new perspective on quantum many-body physics. In these experimental setups, it is possible to study coherent time evolution of isolated quantum systems. These dynamics reveal new physics beyond the low-energy properties that are usually relevant in solid-state many-body systems. In this paper, we study the time evolution of antiferromagnetic order in the Heisenberg chain after a sudden change of the anisotropy parameter, using various numerical and analytical methods. As a generic result, we find that the order parameter, which can show oscillatory or non-oscillatory dynamics, decays exponentially except for the effectively non-interacting case of the XX limit. For weakly ordered initial states, we also find evidence for an algebraic correction to the exponential law. The study is based on numerical simulations using a numerical matrix product method for infinite system sizes (iMPS), for which we provide a detailed description and an error analysis. Additionally, we investigate in detail the exactly solvable XX limit. These results are compared to approximative analytical approaches including an effective description by the XZ model as well as by mean-field, Luttinger-liquid and sine-Gordon theories. The comparison reveals which aspects of non-equilibrium dynamics can, as in equilibrium, be described by low-energy theories and which are the novel phenomena specific to quantum quench dynamics. The relevance of the energetically high part of the spectrum is illustrated by means of a full numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian.

Quantum phase transitions in a spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain with long-range interactions and modulated single-ion anisotropy

Jie Ren, Wen‐Long You, Andrzej M. Oleś

We study the phase diagram of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain with isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions decaying with a power law $\ensuremath{\propto}{r}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ $(\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\ge}1)$ accompanied by modulated single-ion anisotropy. Employing the techniques of the density-matrix renormalization group, the effects of long-range interactions and single-ion anisotropy on a variety of correlations are investigated. In order to check the consistency, the fidelity susceptibilities are evaluated across quantum phase transitions. The quantum critical points are faithfully detected and orders of phase transitions are determined. The correlation-length critical exponent is extracted from scaling functions of the fidelity susceptibility. The presence of long-range interactions leads to a quantitative change of the phase boundaries and reduces the order of the phase transition under certain conditions. A direct first-order transition between the periodic N\'eel phase and the large-$D$ phase occurs for slowly decaying antiferromagnetic interactions.

Quench Dynamics of the Anisotropic Heisenberg Model

Wenshuo Liu, Natan Andrei

We develop an analytical approach for the study of the quench dynamics of the anisotropic Heisenberg model (XXZ model) on the infinite line. We present the exact time-dependent wave functions after a quench in an integral form for any initial state and for any anisotropy Δ by means of a generalized Yudson contour representation. We calculate the evolution of several observables from two particular initial states: starting from a local Néel state we calculate the time evolution of the antiferromagnetic order parameter-staggered magnetization; starting from a state with consecutive flipped spins (1) we calculate the evolution of the local magnetization and express it in terms of the propagation of magnons and bound state excitations, and (2) we predict the evolution of the induced spin currents. These predictions can be confronted with experiments in ultracold gases in optical lattices. We also show how the "string" solutions of Bethe ansatz equations emerge naturally from the contour approach.
