Abstract

We have investigated the spin-1/2 XY frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg honeycomb model, which features an intermediate region in its ground state phase diagram that is not well understood. The two dominant phases in the diagram are the quantum spin-liquid (QSL) and the antiferromagnetic Ising order. Quantum correlations suggest that the QSL phase is likely to exhibit entanglement. To explore this possibility, we utilized numerical Lanczos and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods to calculate concurrence, quantum discord (QD), and entanglement entropy. The results of our study indicate the existence of quantum entanglement within the intermediate region, implying a greater probability for the dominance of the quantum spin-liquid (QSL) phase over the antiferromagnetic Ising order. This discovery underscores the importance of considering quantum correlations in comprehending the model's behavior and provides insight into the complex nature of quantum systems.

Entanglement and quantum correlations in the XX spin-1/2 honeycomb lattice

Sahar Satoori, S. Mahdavifar, Javad Vahedi

The ground state phase diagram of the dimerized spin-1/2 XX honeycomb model in presence of a transverse magnetic field (TF) is known. With the absence of the magnetic field, two quantum phases, namely, the Néel and the dimerized phases have been identified. Moreover, canted Néel and the paramagnetic (PM) phases also emerge by applying the magnetic field. In this paper, using two powerful numerical exact techniques, Lanczos exact diagonalization, and Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods, we study this model by focusing on the quantum correlations, the concurrence, and the quantum discord (QD) among nearest-neighbor spins. We show that the quantum correlations can capture the position of the quantum critical points in the whole range of the ground state phase diagram consistent with previous results. Although the concurrence and the QD are short-range, informative about long-ranged critical correlations. In addition, we address a "magnetic-entanglement" behavior that starts from an entangled field around the saturation field.

Unexpected z -Direction Ising Antiferromagnetic Order in a Frustrated Spin- 1/2 J1−J2 XY Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

Zhenyue Zhu, David A. Huse, Steven R. White

Using the density matrix renormalization group on wide cylinders, we study the phase diagram of the spin-1/2 XY model on the honeycomb lattice, with first-neighbor (J1=1) and frustrating second-neighbor (J2>0) interactions. For the intermediate frustration regime 0.22≲J2≲0.36, we find a surprising antiferromagnetic Ising phase, with ordered moments pointing along the z axis, despite the absence of any S(z)S(z) interactions in the Hamiltonian. Surrounding this phase as a function of J2 are antiferromagnetic phases with the moments pointing in the x-y plane for small J2 and a close competition between an x-y plane magnetic collinear phase and a dimer phase for large values of J2. We do not find any spin-liquid phases in this model.

Quantum phases of the frustrated XY models on the honeycomb lattice

Zhenyue Zhu, Steven R. White

Searching for spin-liquid states has long been attracting both experimentalists and theorists. In this paper, we review recent density matrix renormalization group studies of the spin-½ XY model on the honeycomb lattice, with first-neighbor (J1 = 1) and frustrating second-neighbor (J2 > 0) interactions. For the intermediate frustration regime 0.22 ≲ J2 ≲ 0.36, there exists a surprising antiferromagnetic Ising phase, with ordered moments pointing along the z-axis, despite the absence of any SzSz interactions in the Hamiltonian. Surrounding this phase as a function of J2 are antiferromagnetic phases with the moments pointing in the xy-plane for small J2 and a close competition between an xy-plane magnetic collinear phase and a dimer phase for large values of J2. No spin-liquid phases was found in the XY model even with the third-neighbor (J3 > 0) interactions.

Quantum phase diagram of the spin-1 J1−J2 Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice

Shou-Shu Gong, Wei Kang Zhu, D. N. Sheng

Strongly correlated systems with geometric frustrations can host the emergent phases of matter with unconventional properties. Here, we study the spin $S=1$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with the antiferromagnetic first- (${J}_{1}$) and second-neighbor (${J}_{2}$) interactions ($0.0\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\le}0.5$) by means of density-matrix renormalization group. In the parameter regime ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.27$, the system sustains a N\'eel antiferromagnetic phase. At the large ${J}_{2}$ side ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.32$, a stripe antiferromagnetic phase is found. Between the two magnetic ordered phases $0.27\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.32$, we find a nonmagnetic intermediate region with a plaquette valence-bond order. Although our calculations are limited within a six unit-cell width on cylinder, we present evidence that this plaquette state could be a strong candidate for this nonmagnetic region in the thermodynamic limit. We also briefly discuss the nature of the quantum phase transitions in the system. We gain further insight into the nonmagnetic phases in the spin-1 system by comparing its phase diagram with the spin-$1/2$ system.

Phase diagram of the frustrated quantum- XY model on the honeycomb lattice studied by series expansions: Evidence for proximity to a bicritical point

J. Oitmaa, Rajiv R. P. Singh

We study the nearest-neighbor exchange (${J}_{1}$) and second-nearest-neighbor exchange (${J}_{2}$) $XY$ antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice using ground state series expansions around N\'eel, columnar, and dimer phases. The conventional two-sublattice $XY$ N\'eel order at small ${J}_{2}$ vanishes at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.22\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01$ in agreement with results from density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies. Near the transition, we find evidence for an approximate emergent symmetry between $XY$ and Ising degrees of freedom, namely the nearest-neighbor Ising and $XY$ spin correlations become nearly equal. This suggests that the system is close to a bicritical point separating $XY$ and Ising orders. At still larger ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}$ the columnar and dimer energies are found to be nearly degenerate. At even larger ${J}_{2}$ the columnar phase is obtained. The ground state energies in all three phases are in good agreement with the values found in the DMRG studies.

Candidate quantum disordered intermediate phase in the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the maple-leaf lattice

Lasse Gresista, Ciarán Hickey, Simon Trebst +1 more

Quantum antiferromagnets on geometrically frustrated lattices have long attracted interest for the formation of quantum disordered states and the possible emergence of quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground states. Here we turn to the nearest-neighbor spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the maple-leaf lattice, which is known to relieve frustration by the formation of canted ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ magnetic order or valence bond crystal order when varying the bond anisotropy. Employing a pseudofermion functional renormalization group approach to assess its ground state phase diagram in detail, we present evidence for a QSL regime sandwiched between these two limiting phases. The formation of such a QSL might signal proximity to a possible deconfined quantum critical point from which it emerges, and that is potentially accessible by tuning the exchange couplings. Our conclusions are based on large-scale simulations involving a careful finite-size scaling analysis of the behavior of magnetic susceptibility and spin-spin correlation functions under renormalization group flow.
