Abstract

In this work we employ the split-step technique combined with a Legendre pseudospectral representation to solve various time-dependent GrossPitaevskii equations (GPE). Our findings based on the numerical accuracy of this approach applied for one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) problems show that it can provide accurate and stable solutions. Moreover, this approach has been applied to study the dynamics of the Bose-Einstein condensate which is modeled with the GPE. The breathing of condensate with a repulsive and attractive interactions trapped in 1D and 2D harmonic potentials has been simulated as well.

Bose-Einstein condensation dynamics from the numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

Sadhan K. Adhikari, Paulsamy Muruganandam

We study certain stationary and time-evolution problems of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates using the numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with both spherical and axial symmetries. We consider time-evolution problems initiated by suddenly changing the interatomic scattering length or harmonic trapping potential in a stationary condensate. These changes introduce oscillations in the condensate which are studied in detail. We use a time iterative split-step method for the solution of the time-dependent GP equation, where all nonlinear and linear non-derivative terms are treated separately from the time propagation with the kinetic energy terms. Even for an arbitrarily strong nonlinear term this leads to extremely accurate and stable results after millions of time iterations of the original equation.

Bose-Einstein Condensation Dynamics from the Numerical Solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation by the Pseudospectral Method

Paulsamy Muruganandam, Sadhan K. Adhikari

We study certain stationary and time-evolution problems of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates of weakly interacting alkali atoms described by a nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. We suggest a pseudospectral method involving Laguerre polynomials to solve the time dependent GP for a spherically symmetric trap potential. The radial wavefunction and energy values have been calculated for different nonlinearities. Further, we study the effect of suddenly changing the interatomic scattering length or harmonic oscillator trap potential in the condensate. We also investigate the frequency of oscillation due to the variation in the strength of nonlinearity.

A Fourth-Order Time-Splitting Laguerre--Hermite Pseudospectral Method for Bose--Einstein Condensates

Weizhu Bao, Jie Shen

A fourth-order time-splitting Laguerre--Hermite pseudospectral method is introduced for Bose--Einstein condensates (BECs) in three dimensions with cylindrical symmetry. The method is explicit, time reversible, and time transverse invariant. It conserves the position density and is spectral accurate in space and fourth-order accurate in time. Moreover, the new method has two other important advantages: (i) it reduces a three-dimensional (3-D) problem with cylindrical symmetry to an effective two-dimensional (2-D) problem; (ii) it solves the problem in the whole space instead of in a truncated artificial computational domain. The method is applied to vector Gross--Pitaevskii equations (VGPEs) for multicomponent BECs. Extensive numerical tests are presented for the one-dimensional (1-D) GPE, the 2-D GPE with radial symmetry, the 3-D GPE with cylindrical symmetry, as well as 3-D VGPEs for two-component BECs, to show the efficiency and accuracy of the new numerical method.

Numerical solution to the time-independent gross-Pitaevskii Equation

Tsogbayar Tsednee, B. Tsednee, Tsookhuu Khinayat

We solve the time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equation modeling the Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an anistropic harmonic potential using a pseudospectral method. Numerically obtained values for an energy and a chemical potential for the condensate with positive and negative scattering length have been compared with those from the literature. The results show that they are in good agreement when an atomic interaction is not too strong.

Stationary states of the BEC in the harmonic magnetic trap

Sukh Ochir, Khenmedekh Lochin

In this paper we calculated the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) using imaginary time split operator method. The 3D GPE is reduced according to the symmetry to the 1D and 2D equations. These equations are solved numerically propagating the solution in the imaginary time using Crank-Nicholson split time code.

Spectral method for the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic trap

Claude M. Dion, Eric Cancès B

We study the numerical resolution of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a nonlinear Schrödinger equation used to simulate the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates. Considering condensates trapped in harmonic potentials, we present an efficient algorithm by making use of a spectral-Galerkin method, using a basis set of harmonic-oscillator functions, and the Gauss-Hermite quadrature. We apply this algorithm to the simulation of condensate breathing and scissor modes.
