Abstract

Abstract Unitary fusion categories formalise the algebraic theory of topological quantum computation. These categories come naturally enriched in a subcategory of the category of Hilbert spaces, and by looking at this subcategory, one can identify a collection of generators for implementing quantum computation. We represent such generators for the Fibonacci and Ising models, namely the encoding of qubits and the associated braid group representations, with the ZX-calculus and show that in both cases, the Yang–Baxter equation is directly connected to an important rule in the complete ZX-calculus known as the P-rule, which enables one to interchange the phase gates defined with respect to complementary bases. In the Ising case, this reduces to a familiar rule relating two distinct Euler decompositions of the Hadamard gate as <?CDATA $\pi/2$?> π / 2 Z- and X-phase gates, whereas in the Fibonacci case, we give a previously unconsidered exact solution of the P-rule involving the Golden ratio. We demonstrate the utility of these representations by giving graphical derivations of the single-qubit braid equations for Fibonacci anyons and the single- and two-qubit braid equations for Ising anyons. We furthermore present a fully graphical procedure for simulating and simplifying braids with the ZX-representation of Fibonacci anyons.

Bicategorical aspects of topological quantum computation

Ahmadi, Fatimah Rita

Topological quantum computation offers a paradigm shift for fault-tolerant quantum computation. It proposes encoding qubits in the mutual states of quasiparticles (called anyons) of 2-dimensional topologically ordered matter. Unitary ribbon fusion categories describe the algebraic theory of anyons. Although the category of an anyonic theory specifies suitable computational spaces, qubits, and quantum gates, it does not precisely formalise the category of topological quantum computation (TQC). We describe the TQC category using the elements of categorical quantum mechanics (CQM). Given the qubit-based graphical calculus accompanying CQM, called the ZX-calculus, we present the details of the ZX-representation of Fibonacci and Ising anyons. Finally, we propose a bicategorical approach to convene anyonic theory and TQC in one (bi)category. In the second part of the thesis, we discuss how the bicategory of module categories formalises boundary types and their excitations. We show theorems that reduce the data to physically meaningful data. A 2-category capable of describing topological quantum computation with point-like and string-like excitations is speculated to be a fusion 2-category. We discuss the available definition in the literature. The paper particularly lacks a rigorous definition for additive 2-categories; in this thesis, we give a definition. We propose the idea of typing higher-ranked matrices in additive 2-categories. Lastly, we overview the complete definition of monoidal 2-categories and recover Kapranov and Voevodsky's definition from the algebraic definition of tricategory by Gurski. This definition and the detailed list of data are the complete ingredients physicists need for quantum computation with higher dimensional excitations.

Topological Quantum Computation via Non-Abelian Anyon Braid Group Representations — E8 Intelligence Research

FINDING: Anyon braiding forms the computational substrate for topological quantum computation, with non-Abelian statistics encoded in braid group representations rather than local qubit states. | MATH: Braid group \(B_n\) generators \(\sigma_i\) satisfy \(\sigma_i\sigma_{i+1}\sigma_i = \sigma_{i+1}\sigma_i\sigma_{i+1}\) (Yang–Baxter equation); non-Abelian anyons carry unitary representations \(U(\sigma_i)\) with \(U(\sigma_i)U(\sigma_j)=U(\sigma_j)U(\sigma_i)\) for \(|i-j|\geq 2\). Fibonacci anyons: fusion rule \(\tau \times \tau = 1 + \tau\), Hilbert space dimension grows as Fibonacci sequence \(F_n\), golden ratio \(\phi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618\) appears as asymptotic dimension growth rate.
