Abstract

Abstract In this work we study families of generalised coherent states constructed from SL(2,R) subalgebras of the Virasoro algebra in two-dimensional conformal field theories. We derive the energy density and entanglement entropy and discuss their equivalence with analogous quantities computed in locally excited states. Moreover, we analyze their dual, holographic geometries and reproduce entanglement entropies from the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription. Finally, we outline possible applications of this universal class of states to operator growth and inhomogeneous quenches.

Holographic entanglement entropy beyond coherent states

Curtis T. Asplund

We study entanglement entropy for a class of states in quantum field theory that are entangled superpositions of coherent states with well-separated supports, analogous to Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen or Bell states. We calculate the contributions beyond the area law in a simple model. In the case of strongly coupled conformal field theories, we argue that these states are holographically dual to superpositions of bulk geometries. We note that for these states one can use the Ryu-Takayanagi holographic entanglement entropy formula to calculate some terms in the entanglement entropy, but that there can be additional O(N^2) contributions. We argue that this class of states includes those generated by local quenches and thus that these cannot be described by a classical dual geometry. These considerations may be important for more fine grained treatments of holographic thermalization.

Holographic entanglement entropy from 2d CFT: heavy states and local quenches

Curtis T. Asplund, Alice Bernamonti, Federico Galli +1 more

We consider the entanglement entropy in 2d conformal field theory in a class of excited states produced by the insertion of a heavy local operator. These include both high-energy eigenstates of the Hamiltonian and time-dependent local quenches. We compute the universal contribution from the stress tensor to the single interval Renyi entropies and entanglement entropy, and conjecture that this dominates the answer in theories with a large central charge and a sparse spectrum of low-dimension operators. The resulting entanglement entropies agree precisely with holographic calculations in three-dimensional gravity. High-energy eigenstates are dual to microstates of the BTZ black hole, so the corresponding holographic calculation is a geodesic length in the black hole geometry; agreement between these two answers demonstrates that these individual microstates of holographic CFTs effectively thermalize at the level of the single-interval entanglement entropy. For local quenches, the dual geometry is a highly boosted black hole or conical defect. On the CFT side, the rise in entanglement entropy after a quench is directly related to the monodromy of a Virasoro conformal block.

Holographic entanglement entropy for a large class of states in 2D CFT

Bin Chen, Jie-qiang Wu

In this paper, we study the entanglement entropy in a large class of states of two-dimensional conformal field theory in the the large central charge limit. This class of states includes the states created by the insertion of a finite number of local heavy operators. By using the monodromy analysis, we obtain the leading order entanglement entropy for the general state. We show that it is exactly captured by the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, by using the Wilsonian line prescription in the Chern-Simons formulation of the AdS3 gravity.

Holographic entanglement entropy : structure and applications from noncommutative field theories to energy conditions

Charles Rabideau

The holographic Ryu-Takayanagi formula for entanglement entropy connects the entanglement of a field theory to the geometry of a dual gravitational theory in a straightforward and universal way. The first part of this thesis applies this formula to study the entanglement entropy in strongly coupled noncommutative field theories. It is found that the ground state of these theories have substantial entanglement at the length scale of the noncommutativity. The entanglement entropy in a different perturbative regime is also computed, where in contrast it is found that noncommutative interactions do not induce long range entanglement in the ground state to leading order in perturbations theory. The second part of this thesis explores some general consequences of this holographic formula for the entanglement entropy. Identities involving entanglement entropies are related to nontrivial geometric constraints on gravitational duals. In particular, the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy is used to show that dual three dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter gravitational states must obey an averaged null energy condition. Finally, this holographic formula allows us at least in principle to express the entanglement entropy of a region in a holographic field theory in terms of the one-point functions in that theory. This is explored in the context of a two dimensional conformal field theory where explicit calculations are possible. Our results in this case allow us to extend a recent proposal that the entanglement entropy of states near the vacuum of conformal theories can be understood by propagation in an auxiliary de Sitter space.

Entanglement Entropy at Large Central Charge

Thomas Hartman

Two-dimensional conformal field theories with a large central charge and a small number of low-dimension operators are studied using the conformal block expansion. A universal formula is derived for the Renyi entropies of N disjoint intervals in the ground state, valid to all orders in a series expansion. This is possible because the full perturbative answer in this regime comes from the exchange of the stress tensor and other descendants of the vacuum state. Therefore, the Renyi entropy is related to the Virasoro vacuum block at large central charge. The entanglement entropy, computed from the Renyi entropy by an analytic continuation, decouples into a sum of single-interval entanglements. This field theory result agrees with the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for the holographic entanglement entropy of a 2d CFT, applied to any number of intervals, and thus can be interpreted as a microscopic calculation of the area of minimal surfaces in 3d gravity.

Holographic quantum scars

Diego Liška, Vladimir Gritsev, Ward Vleeshouwers +1 more

We discuss a construction of quantum many-body scars in the context of holography. We consider two-dimensional conformal field theories and use their dynamical symmetries, naturally realized through the Virasoro algebra, to construct scarred states. By studying their Loschmidt amplitude, we evaluate the states’ periodic properties. A geometrical interpretation allows us to compute the expectation value of the stress tensor and entanglement entropy of these scarred states. We show that their holographic dual is related by a diffeomorphism to empty AdS, even for energies above the black hole threshold. We also demonstrate that expectation values in the scarred states are generally non-thermal and that their entanglement entropy grows with the energy as \log(E) log ( E ) in contrast to \sqrt{E} E for the typical (bulk) states. Furthermore, we identify fixed points on the CFT plane associated with divergent or vanishing entanglement entropy in the limit where the scarred states have infinite energy.
