Geometric phases in kaon decays and baryogenesis

Abstract

We studied the formalism for construction of Bargmann invariants (BIs) as quantum mechanical geometric phases and identified the CP invariance with the rephasing invariant phases in neutral kaon system, kaon decays, baryogenesis and leptogenesis. We develop this formalism to express the CP violation in terms of the Bargmann invariants, which allow us to interpret them as geometric phases. We then comment on the application of such generalized treatment of CP phases.

Expressing CP Violation in Terms of Bargmann Invariants and Geometric Phases in Kaon Decays and Baryogenesis

Swarup Sangiri

We studied the CP violating phases in the neutral kaon oscillations and decays in the effective field theory of kaons, without going into the quark level, and connected the CP violating parameters to the Bargmann invariants and hence to the geometric phases. We extended this approach to demonstrate how the CP violating parameters appearing in the process of baryogenesis are related to the Bargmann invariants, and hence with the geometric phases of those systems. We then concluded on the applications of such a generalized treatment of CP violating phases.

Geometric phases in neutral kaon mixing and CP violation

Swarup Sangiri

We studied the formalism for construction of geometric phases (Berry phases) in the neutral kaon mixing system. We explicitly calculated the geometric phases for the [Formula: see text] conserving and [Formula: see text] violating scenarios with effective meson field theory and the [Formula: see text] violating phase δ has been shown to be of geometrical origin.

Bargmann invariants, null phase curves, and a theory of the geometric phase

Narasimhaiengar Mukunda, Arvind, Elisa Ercolessi +3 more

We present a theory of the geometric phase based logically on the Bargmann invariant of quantum mechanics, and null phase curves in ray space, as the fundamental ingredients. Null phase curves are themselves defined entirely in terms of the (third order) Bargmann invariant, and it is shown that these are the curves natural to geometric phase theory, rather than geodesics used in earlier treatments. The natural symplectic structure in ray space is seen to play a crucial role in the definition of the geometric phase. Logical consistency of the formulation is explicitly shown, and the principal properties of geometric phases are deduced as systematic consequences.

Geometric phases for finite-dimensional systems—The roles of Bargmann invariants, null phase curves, and the Schwinger–Majorana SU(2) framework

K. S. Akhilesh, Arvind, S. Chaturvedi +2 more

We present a study of the properties of Bargmann Invariants (BIs) and Null Phase Curves (NPCs) in the theory of the geometric phase for finite dimensional systems. A recent suggestion to exploit the Majorana theorem on symmetric SU(2) multispinors is combined with the Schwinger oscillator operator construction to develop efficient operator-based methods to handle these problems. The BI is described using intrinsic unitary invariant angle parameters whose algebraic properties as functions of Hilbert space dimension are analyzed using elegant group theoretic methods. The BI-geometric phase connection, extended by the use of NPCs, is explored in detail, and interesting new experiments in this subject are pointed out.

Geometric Phases in Two-Level Mixing: From Neutral Mesons to Holonomic Qubits and Topological Majorana Modes

Swarup Sangiri, Utpal Sarkar, A Taraphder

We investigate the geometric structure of a Hermitian two-level mixing Hamiltonian motivated by neutral meson oscillations and its connections with qubit, fermionic, and topological descriptions. Mapping the Hamiltonian to an effective qubit representation, we analyze the geometric phase associated with cyclic parameter evolution on the Bloch sphere. Without identifying the complex mixing phase with a physical CP-violation observable, we interpret it as a CP-like geometric parameter controlling the azimuthal orientation of the Hamiltonian vector and its reversal under phase conjugation. Third-order Bargmann invariants constructed from the eigenstates yield an associated discrete phase whose dependence on the mixing parameters is examined alongside the continuous geometric construction. The cyclic evolution is also represented as a single-qubit $R_z$ phase operation and expressed through Majorana bilinears. Extending the construction to the momentum-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian of the Kitaev chain, we relate momentum-space winding to the topological regimes and the quantized Berry (Zak) phase in the real-parameter model, while the corresponding Bargmann construction approaches the global phase in the continuum limit. Together, these results provide a geometric perspective connecting phase structure, qubit operations, fermionic representations, and momentum-space topology within related two-level Hamiltonians.

Bargmann invariants and geometric phases: A generalized connection

Eqab M. Rabei, Arvind, Narasimhaiengar Mukunda +1 more

We develop the broadest possible generalization of the well known connection between quantum-mechanical Bargmann invariants and geometric phases. The key concept is that of null phase curves in quantum-mechanical ray and Hilbert spaces. Examples of such curves are developed. Our generalization is shown to be essential for properly understanding geometric phase results in the cases of coherent states and of Gaussian states. Differential geometric aspects of null phase curves are also briefly explored.
