Abstract

Symmetric mass generation (SMG) is a mechanism to give gapless fermions a mass gap by nonperturbative interactions without generating any fermion bilinear condensation. The previous studies of SMG have been limited to Dirac/Weyl/Majorana fermions with zero Fermi volume in the free fermion limit. In this paper, we generalize the concept of SMG to Fermi liquid (FL) with a finite Fermi volume and discuss how to gap out the Fermi surfaces (FSs) by interactions without breaking the U(1) loop group symmetry or developing topological orders. We provide examples of FS SMG in both $(1+1)$-dimensional $[(1+1)\mathrm{D}]$ and $(2+1)$-dimensional FL systems when several FSs together cancel the FS anomaly. However, the U(1) loop group symmetry in these cases is still restrictive enough to rule out all possible fermion bilinear gapping terms, such that a nonperturbative interaction mechanism is the only way to gap out the FSs. This symmetric FS reconstruction is in contrast to the conventional symmetry-breaking gapping mechanism in the FL. As a side product, our model provides a pristine one-dimensional lattice regularization for the $(1+1)\mathrm{D}$ U(1) symmetric chiral fermion model (e.g., the 3-4-5-0 model) by utilizing a lattice translation symmetry as an emergent U(1) symmetry at low energy. This opens up the opportunity for efficient numerical simulations of chiral fermions in their own dimensions without introducing mirror fermions under the domain wall fermion construction.

Green's function zeros in Fermi surface symmetric mass generation

Da-Chuan Lu, Meng Zeng, Yi‐Zhuang You

The Fermi surface symmetric mass generation (SMG) is an intrinsically interaction-driven mechanism that opens an excitation gap on the Fermi surface without invoking symmetry-breaking or topological order. We explore this phenomenon within a bilayer square lattice model of spin-1/2 fermions, where the system can be tuned from a metallic Fermi liquid phase to a strongly interacting SMG insulator phase by an interlayer spin-spin interaction. The SMG insulator preserves all symmetries and has no mean-field interpretation at the single-particle level. It is characterized by zeros in the fermion Green's function, which encapsulate the same Fermi volume in momentum space as the original Fermi surface, a feature mandated by the Luttinger theorem. Utilizing both numerical and field-theoretical methods, we provide compelling evidence for these Green's function zeros across both strong and weak coupling regimes of the SMG phase. Our findings highlight the robustness of the zero Fermi surface, which offers promising avenues for experimental identification of SMG insulators through spectroscopy experiments despite potential spectral broadening from noise or dissipation.

Fermi surface symmetric mass generation: a quantum Monte-Carlo study

Wei-Xuan Chang, Sibo Guo, Yi‐Zhuang You +1 more

The symmetric mass generation (SMG) phase is an insulator in which a single-particle gap is intrinsically opened by the interaction, without involving symmetry spontaneously breaking or topological order. Here, we perform unbiased quantum Monte-Carlo simulation and systematically investigate a bilayer fermionic model hosting Fermi surface SMG in the strongly interacting regime. With increasing interaction strength, the model undergoes a quantum phase transition from an exciton insulator to an SMG phase, belonging to the (2+1)-dimensional O(4) universality class. We access the spectral properties of the SMG phase, resembling a Mott insulating phase with relatively flat dispersion and pronounced spectral broadening. The dispersion of Green's function zeros is extracted from spectral function, featuring a surface at zero frequency precisely located at the original non-interacting Fermi surface, which constitutes a hallmark of the Fermi surface SMG phase. The bilayer model we study is potentially relevant to the newly discovered high-$T_c$ superconductor $\rm{La}_3 \rm{Ni}_2 \rm{O}_7$. Our results in SMG phase qualitatively capture the salient features of spectral function unveiled in recent ARPES experiments, shedding new insight on the underlying physics of $\rm{La}_3 \rm{Ni}_2 \rm{O}_7$.

Symmetric Mass Generation in the 1+1 Dimensional Chiral Fermion 3-4-5-0 Model

Meng Zeng, Zheng Zhu, Juven Wang +1 more

Lattice regularization of chiral fermions has been a long-standing problem in physics. In this Letter, we present the density matrix renormalization group simulation of the 3-4-5-0 model of (1+1)D chiral fermions with an anomaly-free chiral U(1) symmetry, which contains two left-moving and two right-moving fermions carrying U(1) charges 3,4 and 5,0, respectively. Following the Wang-Wen chiral fermion model, we realize the chiral fermions and their mirror partners on the opposite boundaries of a thin strip of (2+1)D lattice model of multilayer Chern insulator, whose finite width implies the quantum system is effectively (1+1)D. By introducing two sets of carefully designed six-fermion local interactions to the mirror sector only, we demonstrate that the mirror fermions can be gapped out by the interaction beyond a critical strength without breaking the chiral U(1) symmetry, via the symmetric mass generation mechanism. We show that the interaction-driven gapping transition is in the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class. We determine the evolution of Luttinger parameters before the transition, which confirms that the transition happens exactly at the point when the interaction term becomes marginal. As the mirror sector is gapped after the transition, we check that the fermions in the light chiral fermion sector remain gapless, which provides the desired lattice regularization of chiral fermions.

Quantum Many-Body Lattice C-R-T Symmetry: Fractionalization, Anomaly, and Symmetric Mass Generation

Yangyang Li, Juven Wang, Yi‐Zhuang You

Charge conjugation (C), mirror reflection (R), and time reversal (T) symmetries, along with internal symmetries, are essential for massless Majorana and Dirac fermions. These symmetries are sufficient to rule out potential fermion bilinear mass terms, thereby establishing a gapless free fermion fixed point phase, pivotal for symmetric mass generation (SMG) transition. In this work, we systematically study the anomaly of C-R-T-internal symmetry in all spacetime dimensions by analyzing the projective representation (i.e. the fractionalization) of the C-R-T-internal symmetry group in the quantum many-body Hilbert space on the lattice. By discovering the fermion-flavor-number-dependent C-R-T-internal symmetry's anomaly structure, we demonstrate an alternative way to derive the minimal flavor number for SMG, which shows consistency with known results from Kähler-Dirac fermion or cobordism classification. Our findings reveal that, in general spatial dimensions, either 8 copies of staggered Majorana fermions or 4 copies of staggered Dirac fermions admit SMG. By directly searching for 4-fermion interactions that form commuting stabilizers respecting all symmetry constraints, we can prove the explicit SMG gapping retained a unique ground state in the codespace. Furthermore, we establish the correspondence between the symmetry operators of staggered fermions and free fermions, which is instrumental in facilitating the analysis of symmetry fractionalization at the field theory level.

Symmetric mass generation of interacting chiral fermions on a one-dimensional lattice without fermion doubling

V. A. Zakharov, Atsushi Ueda, Frank Verstraete +1 more

Symmetric mass generation is the interaction-induced opening of a fermion gap without spontaneous symmetry breaking. The anomaly-free 3-4-5-0 model of Wang and Wen provides a minimal one-dimensional setting for this phenomenon, but a direct lattice realization faces two obstacles: fermion doubling for local chiral discretizations and perturbative irrelevance of the six-fermion gapping interaction. We address both obstacles. First, we formulate the model on a strictly one-dimensional tangent-fermion lattice, where a nonlocal hopping produces a single chiral branch without a mirror partner while retaining an efficient tensor-network representation. Second, we add a Hubbard-type density-density interaction (Luttinger parameter $K$) that reduces the scaling dimension of the 3-4-5-0 interaction from $5$ to $5K$, making it relevant for $K<2/5$. Density-matrix renormalization group calculations show the opening of an excitation gap in this regime without the appearance of a degenerate ground state, the hallmark of symmetric mass generation.

Symmetric Mass Generation in a Bilayer Honeycomb Lattice with $\mathrm{SU}(2)\times\mathrm{SU}(2)\times\mathrm{SU}(2)/\mathbb{Z}_2$ Symmetry

Cheng-hao He, Yi-Zhuang You, Xiao Yan Xu

A central question beyond the Landau paradigm is the non-perturbative critical theory of the symmetric mass generation (SMG) transition, where strong interactions gap Dirac fermions in (2+1) dimensions without triggering spontaneous symmetry breaking or topological order. While previous studies have already provided evidence for direct SMG transitions in (2+1) dimensions, the fermion scaling dimension -- the key observable for distinguishing candidate critical theories -- has not been determined in a controlled unbiased way. In this Letter, using large-scale determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations of a bilayer honeycomb lattice model with $\mathrm{SU}(2)\times\mathrm{SU}(2)\times\mathrm{SU}(2)/\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, we establish a direct continuous transition by observing the simultaneous opening of single-particle and bosonic gaps at a critical coupling $J_c \approx 2.6$ with correlation length exponent $ν= 1.14(2)$, while an exhaustive search over all 19 symmetry-inequivalent fermion bilinear order parameters confirms the absence of any symmetry breaking. We further obtain the first controlled unbiased estimate of the fermion anomalous dimension, $η_ψ= 0.071(1)$, which deviates significantly from the large-$N$ prediction ($η_ψ\approx 0.595$) and variational Monte Carlo estimates ($η_ψ\approx 0.62$), thereby placing direct quantitative constraints on SMG criticality. By contrasting with a related $\mathrm{Spin}(5)\times\mathrm{U}(1)/\mathbb{Z}_2$ model that develops an intermediate excitonic phase, we show that pure non-Abelian symmetry plays a decisive role in stabilizing the direct SMG transition.
