Abstract

Abstract The squeezed cat state, an essential quantum resource, can be used for quantum error correction and slowing decoherence of the optical cat state. However, preparing a squeezed cat state with high generation rate, and effectively manipulating it, remain challenging. In this work, a high‐performance all‐optical in‐line squeezer is developed to prepare a squeezed cat state and manipulate the phase of the quadrature squeezing. This scheme has the advantages that the phase of the quadrature squeezing of the squeezed cat state can be manipulated by changing the working condition of the squeezer, and that a higher generation rate can be achieved via the deterministic squeezing operation of the in‐line squeezer. The generation rate of squeezed cat states reaches 2 kHz, the same as that of the initial cat state. The all‐optical in‐line squeezer proposed here removes the requirements of electro‐optic and opto‐electric conversions necessary for an off‐line squeezer, thus enabling high‐bandwidth squeezing operations on non‐Gaussian states. These results provide an efficient method to prepare and manipulate optical squeezed cat states, which makes a step closer to their applications in all‐optical quantum information processing.

Remote Preparation of Optical Cat States Based on Gaussian Entanglement

Dongmei Han, Feng-Xiao Sun, Na Wang +5 more

Abstract Remote state preparation enables one to prepare and manipulate quantum state non‐locally. As an essential quantum resource, optical cat state is usually prepared locally by subtracting photons from a squeezed vacuum state. For remote quantum information processing, it is essential to prepare and manipulate optical cat states remotely based on Gaussian entanglement, which remains a challenge. Here, experimental preparation of optical cat states based on a remotely distributed two‐mode Gaussian entangled state in a lossy channel is presented. By performing photon subtraction and homodyne projective measurement at Alice's station, an optical cat state is prepared remotely at Bob's station. Furthermore, the prepared cat state is rotated by changing Alice's measurement basis of homodyne detection, which demonstrates the remote manipulation of it. By distributing two modes of the two‐mode Gaussian entangled state in lossy channels, it is demonstrated that the remotely prepared cat state can tolerate much more loss in Alice's channel than that in Bob's channel. It is also shown that cat states with amplitudes larger than 2 can be prepared by increasing the squeezing level and subtracting photon numbers. The results make a crucial step toward remote hybrid quantum information processing involving discrete‐ and continuous‐variable techniques.

Generation of quantum states with nonlinear squeezing by Kerr nonlinearity

Šimon Bräuer, Petr Marek

In quantum optics, squeezing corresponds to the process in which fluctuations of a quadrature operator are reduced below the shot noise limit. In turn, nonlinear squeezing can be defined as reduction of fluctuations related to nonlinear combination of quadrature operators. Quantum states with nonlinear squeezing are a necessary resource for deterministic implementation of high-order quadrature phase gates that are, in turn, sufficient for advanced quantum information processing. We demonstrate that this class of states can be deterministically prepared by employing a single self-Kerr gate accompanied by suitable Gaussian processing. The required Kerr coupling depends on the energy of the initial system and can be made arbitrarily small. We also employ numerical simulations to analyze the effects of imperfections and to show to which extent can they be neglected.

Generation of large-amplitude squeezed cat states with near-unity efficiency

Simon K. Yung, Matthew S. Winnel, Timothy C. Ralph +1 more

The Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill encoding has emerged as a leading candidate for fault-tolerant quantum computation with continuous variables. For photonic architectures, the major challenge is preparing high-quality resource states, which can be deterministically synthesised from many large-amplitude cat states. Thus far, only modest-sized optical cat states have been prepared experimentally, and the implemented methods are highly probabilistic. We propose an all-optical scheme utilising quantum non-demolition interactions and photon-number measurements to prepare large-amplitude cat states with near-unity probability. Importantly, no particular photon-number outcome is postselected: all outcomes contribute to the accumulated photon number, with the protocol repeated until a required threshold is reached. We demonstrate that the scheme is robust to realistic levels of photon-loss, the dominant source of error in optical systems. Our results highlight the power of active Gaussian operations for state preparation and pave the way for efficient quantum error correction using bosonic codes.

All-optical generation of deterministic squeezed Schrödinger-cat states

Zhucheng Zhang, Lei Shao, Wangjun Lu +1 more

Quantum states are important resources and their preparations are essential prerequisites to all quantum technologies. However, they are extremely fragile due to the inevitable dissipations. Here the all-optical generation of a deterministic squeezed Schr\"odinger-cat state based on dissipation is proposed. Our system is based on the Fredkin-type interaction between three optical modes, one of which is subject to coherent two-photon driving and the others are coherent driving. We show that an effective degenerate three-wave-mixing process can be engineered in our system, which can cause the simultaneous loss of two photons, resulting in the generation of a deterministic squeezed Schr\"odinger-cat state. More importantly, by controlling the driving fields in our system, the two-photon loss can be adjustable, which can accelerate the generation of squeezed Schr\"odinger-cat states. In addition, we exploit the squeezed Schr\"odinger-cat states to estimate the phase in the optical interferometer and show that the quantum Fisher information about the phase can reach the Heisenberg limit in the limit of a large photon number. Meanwhile, it can have an order of magnitude factor improvement over the Heisenberg limit in the low-photon-number regime, which is very valuable for fragile systems that cannot withstand large photon fluxes. This work proposes an all-optical scheme to deterministically prepare the squeezed Schr\"odinger-cat state with high speed and can also be generalized to other physical platforms.

Iterative $C_Z$-gate-based protocol for squeezed Schrödinger cat state engineering

Roman Goncharov, N. G. Veselkova, Alexei D. Kiselev

Squeezed optical Schrödinger cat states constitute a key resource for both fundamental tests of quantum theory and up-to-date quantum technologies. We propose a measurement-assisted gate for the generation and manipulation of the cat states. In this scheme, an ancilla in the non-Gaussian small-amplitude (in general, squeezed) Schrödinger cat state and the target oscillator initially prepared in a squeezed vacuum (or coherent) state are subjected to a quantum nondemolition (QND) entangling operation followed by projective homodyne measurement. The proposed gate enables generation of high-fidelity squeezed Schrödinger cat states with controllable size and squeezing with tunable fidelity/success-probability trade-off. We also introduce an iterative, homodyne-conditioned $C_Z$-based protocol for cat-state amplification. The parameter regimes required to achieve the desired fidelity and the success probability are analyzed. The approach is well suited for applications in measurement-based quantum computing and hybrid quantum networks where non-Gaussian resources enhance computational and communication capabilities.
