Abstract

We investigate interplay of topological and Kondo effects in a one-dimensional Kondo–Heisenberg model with nontrivial conduction band using the density matrix renormalization group method. By analyzing the density profile, the local hybridization, and the spin/charge gap, we find that the Kondo effect can be destructed at edges of the chain by the topological end state below a finite critical Kondo coupling <?CDATA ${J}_{{\rm{K}}}^{{\rm{c}}}$?> J K c . We construct a phase diagram characterizing the transition of the end states.

Magnetic End States in a Strongly Interacting One-Dimensional Topological Kondo Insulator

Alejandro M. Lobos, A. Dobry, Victor M. Galitski

Topological Kondo insulators are strongly correlated materials where itinerant electrons hybridize with localized spins, giving rise to a topologically nontrivial band structure. Here, we use nonperturbative bosonization and renormalization-group techniques to study theoretically a one-dimensional topological Kondo insulator, described as a Kondo-Heisenberg model, where the Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain is coupled to a Hubbard chain through a Kondo exchange interaction in the p-wave channel (i.e., a strongly correlated version of the prototypical Tamm-Schockley model). We derive and solve renormalization-group equations at two-loop order in the Kondo parameter, and find that, at half filling, the charge degrees of freedom in the Hubbard chain acquire a Mott gap, even in the case of a noninteracting conduction band (Hubbard parameter U=0). Furthermore, at low enough temperatures, the system maps onto a spin-1/2 ladder with local ferromagnetic interactions along the rungs, effectively locking the spin degrees of freedom into a spin-1 chain with frozen charge degrees of freedom. This structure behaves as a spin-1 Haldane chain, a prototypical interacting topological spin model, and features two magnetic spin-1/2 end states for chains with open boundary conditions. Our analysis allows us to derive an insightful connection between topological Kondo insulators in one spatial dimension and the well-known physics of the Haldane chain, showing that the ground state of the former is qualitatively different from the predictions of the naive mean-field theory.

Topological phase transition and the effect of Hubbard interactions on the one-dimensional topological Kondo insulator

Jason C. Pillay, Ian P. McCulloch

The effect of a local Kondo coupling and Hubbard interaction on the topological phase of the one-dimensional topological Kondo insulator (TKI) is numerically investigated using the infinite matrix-product state density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. The ground state of the TKI is a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase protected by inversion symmetry. It is found that on its own, the Hubbard interaction that tends to force fermions into a one-charge per site order is insufficient to destroy the SPT phase. However, when the local Kondo Hamiltonian term that favors a topologically trivial ground state with a one-charge per site order is introduced, the Hubbard interaction assists in the destruction of the SPT phase. This topological phase transition occurs in the charge sector where the correlation length of the charge excitation diverges while the correlation length of the spin excitation remains finite. The critical exponents, central charge, and the phase diagram separating the SPT phase from the topologically trivial phase are presented.

Haldane phase in one-dimensional topological Kondo insulators

We investigate the ground-state properties of a recently proposed model for a topological Kondo insulator in one dimension (i.e., the $p$-wave Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model) by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method. The nonstandard Kondo interaction in this model is different from the usual (i.e., local) Kondo interaction in that the localized spins couple to the ``$p$-wave'' spin density of conduction electrons, inducing a topologically nontrivial insulating ground state. Based on the analysis of the charge- and spin-excitation gaps, the string order parameter, and the spin profile in the ground state, we show that, at half filling and low energies, the system is in the Haldane phase and hosts topologically protected spin-1/2 end states. Beyond its intrinsic interest as a useful ``toy model'' to understand the effects of strong correlations on topological insulators, we show that the $p$-wave Kondo-Heisenberg model could be experimentally implemented in $p\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{band}$ optical lattices loaded with ultracold Fermi gases.

Gap formation and phase transition of the anisotropic Kondo necklace model: Density matrix renormalization group analysis

Juan José Mendoza-Arenas, R. Franco, Jereson Silva-Valencia

We analyze the one-dimensional Kondo necklace model, at zero temperature, with an anisotropy parameter $\ensuremath{\eta}$ in the interaction of the conduction chain, by means of the density matrix renormalization group. We calculate the energy gap and estimate the quantum critical points that separate a Kondo singlet state from an antiferromagnetic state, assuming a Kosterlitz-Thouless tendency. We also observe the correlation functions and the structure factors that support our critical points. The resulting phase diagram is presented and compared to that reported previously using Lanczos calculations. It is shown that the quantum critical points vary very slowly with $\ensuremath{\eta}$, but when $\ensuremath{\eta}$ approaches zero, they drop abruptly.

Characterization of a correlated topological Kondo insulator in one dimension

Imre Hagymási, Örs Legeza

We investigate the ground state of a $p\text{-wave}$ Kondo-Heisenberg model introduced by Alexandrov and Coleman with an Ising-type anisotropy in the Kondo interaction and correlated conduction electrons. Our aim is to understand how they affect the stability of the Haldane state obtained in the SU(2)-symmetric case without the Hubbard interaction. By applying the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm and calculating the entanglement entropy we show that in the anisotropic case a phase transition occurs and a N\'eel state emerges above a critical value of the Coulomb interaction. These findings are also corroborated by the examination of the entanglement spectrum and the spin profile of the system which clarify the structure of each phase.

Planar and local anisotropies in the Kondo necklace model

Juan José Mendoza-Arenas, R. Franco, Jereson Silva-Valencia

Abstract Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we study the one‐dimensional Kondo necklace model including two anisotropies: η in the XY interaction of the conduction chain, and Δ in the local Kondo coupling between localized and conduction spins. For different values of the anisotropies, we calculate the energy gap and estimate the quantum critical points in which a phase transition from antiferromagnetic to spin liquid states takes place, assuming a Kosterlitz–Thouless‐like behavior. For the case $\eta = 0$ , the system remains in a spin liquid state for the different Δ considered, but when $\eta \ne 0$ , Δ markedly affects the location of the critical points. We also calculate correlation functions for a specific case, in order to support our gap results.
