Abstract

The Rashba-Hubbard model on the square lattice is the paradigmatic case for studying the effect of spin-orbit coupling, which breaks spin and inversion symmetry, in a correlated electron system. We employ a truncated-unity variant of the functional renormalization group which allows us to analyze magnetic and superconducting instabilities on equal footing. We derive phase diagrams depending on the strengths of Rasbha spin-orbit coupling, real second-neighbor hopping, and electron filling. We find commensurate and incommensurate magnetic phases which compete with $d$-wave superconductivity. Due to the breaking of inversion symmetry, singlet and triplet components mix; we quantify the mixing of $d$-wave singlet pairing with $f$-wave triplet pairing.

Phase diagram of the square-lattice Hubbard model with Rashba-type antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling

Masataka Kawano, Chisa Hotta

We clarify the ground-state phase diagram of the half-filled square-lattice Hubbard model with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) characterized by the spin-split energy bands due to broken inversion symmetry. Although the Rashba metals and insulating magnets have been studied well, the intermediate interaction strength of the system remained elusive due to the lack of appropriate theoretical tools to unbiasedly describe the large-scale magnetic structures. We complementarily apply four different methods (sine-square deformed mean-field theory, random phase approximation, Luttinger-Tisza method, and density matrix embedding theory) and succeed in capturing the incommensurate spin-density-wave (SDW) phases with very long spatial periods which were previously overlooked. The transition to the SDW phases from the metallic phase is driven by an unprecedented instability that nests the two parts of the Fermi surface carrying opposite spins. For large SOC, the spiral, stipe, and vortex phases are obtained, when the four Dirac points exist near the Fermi level and their whole linear dispersions nest by a wavelength $\ensuremath{\pi}$, opening a band gap. These two types of transition provide Fermiology that distinguishes the antisymmetric SOC systems, generating a variety of magnetic phases that start from the relatively weak correlation regime and continue to the strongly interacting limit.

Functional renormalization of spinless triangular-lattice fermions: N-patch vs. truncated-unity scheme

Nico Gneist, Dominik Kiese, Ravn Henkel +3 more

Abstract We study competing orders of spinless fermions in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor interaction. We calculate the effective, momentum-resolved two-particle vertex in an unbiased way in terms of the functional renormalization group method and compare two different schemes for the momentum discretization, one based on dividing the Fermi surface into patches and one based on a channel decomposition. We study attractive and repulsive nearest-neighbor interaction and find a competition of pairing and charge instabilities. In the attractive case, a Pomeranchuk instability occurs at Van Hove filling and f-wave and p-wave pairing emerge when the filling is reduced. In the repulsive case, we obtain a charge density wave at Van Hove filling and extended p-wave pairing with reduced filling. The p-wave pairing solution is doubly degenerate and can realize chiral $$p+ip$$ p + i p superconductivity with different Chern numbers in the ground state. We discuss implications for strongly correlated spin-orbit coupled hexagonal electron systems such as moiré heterostructures. Graphic Abstract

Competing instabilities of the extended Hubbard model on the triangular lattice: Truncated-unity functional renormalization group and application to moiré materials

Nico Gneist, Laura Classen, Michael M. Scherer

A simple yet paradigmatic model for the interplay of strong electronic correlations and geometric frustration is the triangular lattice Hubbard model. Recently it was proposed that moir\'e structures of transition metal dichalcogenides can be used to simulate extended versions that include nonlocal density-density interactions. We study competing instabilities of interacting electrons in such an extended Hubbard model on the triangular lattice near a filling where the density of states has a Van Hove singularity. We employ a truncated-unity functional renormalization group approach to investigate two cases: a paradigmatic minimally extended Hubbard model and a specific model with parameters that are applicable to heterobilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides. We unravel rich phase diagrams, including tendencies to spin-density-wave order and unconventional pairing, which can give rise to topological superconductivity. We classify the symmetry of the superconducting instabilities according to their irreducible representations and show that higher lattice harmonics are dominant when the nearest-neighbor interaction is sizable indicating pair formation between second-nearest neighbors. The phenomenological consequences can be enhanced spin and thermal quantum Hall responses in a topological superconductor.

Superconducting Pairing Symmetry on the Extended Hubbard Model in the Presence of the Rashba-Type Spin–Orbit Coupling

Keisuke Shigeta, Seiichiro Onari, Yukio Tanaka

In order to study the pairing symmetry in non-centrosymmetric superconductors, we solve the linearized Eliashberg's equation on the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model in the presence of the Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) within the random phase approximation. In the presence of the RSOC, three types of pairing symmetries appear in the phase diagram with respect to the on-site Coulomb repulsion U and off-site one V. Each of pairing symmetries is admixture of spin-singlet and -triplet ones. On the basis of analytical study, it is found that the admixture of spin-singlet and -triplet components depends on not only the predominant pairing symmetry but also dispersion relation and pairing interaction.

Spin modulations in the Rashba-Hubbard chain -- a tensor network study

Jozef Genzor, Roman Krčmár, Andrej Gendiar +2 more

Uniform spin-orbit coupling in an open single-band Hubbard chain is an exactly removable \(SU(2)\) gauge field at the Hamiltonian level, but not at the level of laboratory-frame spin correlations. We study this separation using density matrix renormalization group calculations for the repulsive one-dimensional Rashba-Hubbard chain. For open boundary conditions, a site-dependent spin rotation maps the model with hopping \(t\) and Rashba spin-orbit strength \(λ\) onto the ordinary Hubbard chain with renormalized hopping \(t_λ=\sqrt{t^2+λ^2}\). Consequently, charge and energy diagnostics are affected only through the bandwidth renormalization, which is quadratic in weak \(λ/t\). Spin correlations, however, respond already at linear order because the same transformation rotates the local spin basis by the wave vector \(k_{\rm so}=2\arctan(λ/t)\). We use DMRG to verify this observable consequence across the filling diagram of finite open chains. The filling structure follows the gauge-equivalent Hubbard model, whereas the spin structure factor shows the predicted spin-orbit sidebands. A dominant Hubbard-chain magnetic wave vector \(k_0\) is transformed into components at \(k_0\pm k_{\rm so}\), folded into the open-chain Brillouin zone. At half filling, where \(k_0=π\), the two sidebands fold onto a single, in-plane, spin spiral wave with \(k=π-k_{\rm so}<π\). Away from half filling, the incommensurate Hubbard spin response splits into two distinct spin-orbit-shifted components, producing a real-space beating pattern. Our results provide a filling-resolved tensor-network benchmark for the exactly removable limit of one-dimensional spin-orbit coupling, and establish a controlled reference point for ladders, multiorbital chains, rings, proximitized wires, and higher-dimensional Hubbard systems where spin-orbit coupling can no longer be gauged away.

Pauli metallic ground state in Hubbard clusters with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

Valentina Brosco, Daniele Guerci, Massimo Capone

We study the ``phase diagram'' of a Hubbard plaquette with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We show that the peculiar way in which Rashba coupling breaks the spin-rotational symmetry of the Hubbard model allows a mixing of singlet and triplet components in the ground state that slows down and changes the nature of the Mott transition and of the Mott insulating phases.
