Hartree–Fock theory, Lieb’s variational principle, and their generalizations

Abstract

Hartree–Fock theory in quantum mechanics is reviewed, from the proposal of the Hartree–Fock approximation right after quantum mechanics was formulated, to its applications in modern physics. This includes a description of traditional Hartree–Fock theory in quantum chemistry, its generalizations of various kinds, and its importance for predicting the presence of symmetry breaking, or the absence thereof.

The Hartree–Fock approximation

Helmut Hofmann

Abstract This chapter formulates the Hartree-Fock approximation with density matrices, and discusses the properties of the Hartree-Fock equations together with the energy functional for the ground state energy. A generalization to finite thermal excitations is performed by applying the variational principle to the grand canonical ensemble. Finally, the equations for time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) are described both at zero and at finite temperature.

A Verbose Note on Density Functional Theory

Chang Liu

This note is intended for expanding the details on the derivation and properties of density functional theory, in hope to make them more systematic, better motivated, and step-by-step for readers new to the domain. The note starts with basic concepts in quantum mechanics, then takes the step towards many-body systems using the tools of second quantization and Fock space, with some highlights on properties of the Coulomb system. Given these general technical preparations, the Hartree-Fock method is naturally unrolled, with expressions for various cases and quantities. Density functional theory is then presented, with a motivating reasoning of the Kohn-Sham formulation, and a connection and comparison of the expressions with the Hartree-Fock method. Lieb's celebrated 1983 paper on functional analysis on density functionals is also summarized.

The Hartree–Fock Approximation and Other Occupation Number Approximations

Horatiu Nastase

Written for a two-semester graduate course in Quantum Mechanics, this comprehensive text helps develop the tools and formalism of Quantum Mechanics and its applications to physical systems. It suits students who have taken some introductory Quantum Mechanics and Modern Physics courses at undergraduate level, but it is self-contained and does not assume any specific background knowledge beyond appropriate fluency in mathematics. The text takes a modern logical approach rather than a historical one and it covers standard material, such as the hydrogen atom and the harmonic oscillator, the WKB approximations and Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization. Important modern topics and examples are also described, including Berry phase, quantum information, complexity and chaos, decoherence and thermalization, nonstandard statistics, as well as more advanced material such as path integrals, scattering theory, multiparticles and Fock space. Readers will gain a broad overview of Quantum Mechanics, as solid preparation for further study or research.

Quantum dynamics in a time-dependent variational approximation

Fred Cooper, So-Young Pi, P. Stancioff

The time-dependent variational method, which in many-body theory leads to the Hartree-Fock approximation, is here tested in quantum-mechanical models inspired by the physics of the inflationary universe. Some remarks about field-theoretic applications are also made.

Bogoliubov theory and bosonic atoms

Phan Thành Nam

We formulate the Bogoliubov variational principle in a mathematical framework similar to the generalized Hartree-Fock theory. Then we analyze the Bogoliubov theory for bosonic atoms in details. We discuss heuristically why the Bogoliubov energy should give the first correction to the leading energy of large bosonic atoms.

Generalized Hartree-Fock Theory And The Hubbard Model

Volker Bach, Élliott H. Lieb, Jan Philip Solovej

: The familiar unrestricted Hartree-Fock variational principle is generalized to include quasi-free states. As we show, these are in one-to-one correspondence with the one-particle density matrices and these, in turn provide a convenient formulation of a generalized Hartree-Fock variational principle, which includes the BCS theory as a special case. While this generalization is not new, it is not well known and we begin by elucidating it. The Hubbard model, with its particle-hole symmetry, is well suited to exploring this theory because BCS states for the attractive model turn into usual HF states for the repulsive model. We rigorously determine the true, unrestricted minimizers for zero and for nonzero temperature in several cases, notably the half-filled band. For the cases treated here, we can exactly determine all broken and unbroken spatial and gauge symmetries of the Hamiltonian.
