Robust Oscillations and Edge Modes in Nonunitary Floquet Systems

Abstract

We explore oscillatory behavior in a family of periodically driven spin chains which are subject to a weak measurement followed by postselection. We discover a transition to an oscillatory phase as the strength of the measurement is increased. By mapping these spin chains to free fermion models, we find that this transition is reflected in the opening of a gap in the imaginary direction. Interestingly, we find a robust, purely real, edge π mode in the oscillatory phase. We establish a correspondence between the complex bulk spectrum and these edge modes. These oscillations are numerically found to be stable against interactions and disorder.

Almost strong ( 0 , π ) edge modes in clean interacting one-dimensional Floquet systems

Daniel J. Yates, Fabian H. L. Eßler, Aditi Mitra

Certain periodically driven quantum many-particle systems in one dimension are known to exhibit edge modes that are related to topological properties and lead to approximate degeneracies of the Floquet spectrum. A similar situation occurs in spin chains, where stable edge modes were shown to exist at all energies in certain integrable spin chains. Moreover, these edge modes were found to be remarkably stable to perturbations. Here we investigate the stability of edge modes in interacting, periodically driven, clean systems. We introduce a model that features edge modes that persist over timesscales well in excess of the time needed for the bulk of the system to heat to infinite temperatures.

Long-lived period-doubled edge modes of interacting and disorder-free Floquet spin chains

Daniel J. Yates, Alexander G. Abanov, Aditi Mitra

Abstract Floquet spin chains have been a venue for understanding topological states of matter that are qualitatively different from their static counterparts by, for example, hosting π edge modes that show stable period-doubled dynamics. However the stability of these edge modes to interactions has traditionally required the system to be many-body localized in order to suppress heating. In contrast, here we show that even in the absence of disorder, and in the presence of bulk heating, π edge modes are long lived. Their lifetime is extracted from exact diagonalization and is found to be non-perturbative in the interaction strength. A tunneling estimate for the lifetime is obtained by mapping the stroboscopic time-evolution to dynamics of a single particle in Krylov subspace. In this subspace, the π edge mode manifests as the quasi-stable edge mode of an inhomogeneous Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model whose dimerization vanishes in the bulk of the Krylov chain.

Topological edge states at Floquet quantum criticality

Longwen Zhou, Jiangbin Gong, Xue-Jia Yu

Topologically protected edge states exactly at topological phase boundaries challenge the conventional belief that topological states must be associated with a bulk energy gap. Because periodically driven (Floquet) systems host unusually intricate topological phase boundaries, topological edge states can be prolific at such Floquet quantum criticality. Working on a class of chiral-symmetric, Floquet-driven Majorana fermion chains, we analytically and computationally show that the precise boundaries between different Floquet topological gapped phases can accommodate topological edge modes, including the so-called critical Majorana π modes. We also identify a general bulk-edge correspondence formula to predict and understand the emergence of topological edge modes at Floquet quantum criticality. Of direct interest to quantum simulation experiments, our work opens an avenue for exploring topological physics intrinsic to nonequilibrium phase boundaries. The authors develop a theoretical framework to characterize the topology and edge states at the nonequilibrium critical points of periodically driven (Floquet) quantum systems. The rule of bulk-edge correspondence applicable to both gapped and gapless Floquet topological phases in 1D chiral symmetric driven systems is proposed.

Gapless Floquet topology

Gabriel Cardoso, Hsiu-Chung Yeh, Leonid Korneev +2 more

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in insulators and superconductors are known for their robust edge modes, linked to bulk invariants through the bulk-boundary correspondence. While this principle traditionally applies to gapped phases, recent advances have extended it to gapless systems, where topological edge-states persist even in the absence of a bulk gap. We extend this framework to periodically driven chains with chiral symmetry, revealing the existence of topological edge zero and $\ensuremath{\pi}$ modes despite the lack of bulk gaps in the quasienergy spectrum. By examining the half-period decomposition of chiral evolutions, we construct topological invariants that circumvent the need to define the Floquet Hamiltonian, making them more suitable for generalization to the gapless regime. We provide explicit examples, including generalizations of the Kitaev chain and related spin models, where localized $\ensuremath{\pi}$ modes emerge even when the bulk is gapless at the same quasienergy as the edge modes. We numerically study the effect of interactions, which give a finite lifetime to the edge modes in the thermodynamic limit with the decay rate consistent with Fermi's golden rule.

Locked Subharmonic Oscillations in the Entanglement Spectrum of a Periodically Driven Topological Chain

Rishabh Jha

Periodically driven quantum systems can exhibit subharmonic response, usually characterized through physical observables and often discussed in interacting settings. Here we show that a sharp subharmonic signature already appears in the entanglement spectrum of a number-conserving free-fermion system. We study a two-step driven Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain whose Floquet operator supports symmetry-protected edge modes at quasienergies $0$ and $π$. When the initial state is a coherent superposition of these two edge sectors, we show that the subsystem correlation matrix alternates between two stroboscopic structures, and the entanglement spectrum is period-doubled as a set, while an overlap-tracked entanglement level shows a robust period-doubling response with Fourier weight concentrated at half the drive frequency. By contrast, diagonal edge densities remain flat by sublattice symmetry, while an off-diagonal edge-bond observable provides the corresponding linear one-body comparator. The effect disappears both when the initial state is replaced by a stroboscopically stationary Floquet eigenstate built from the same topological mode content, and when the system is placed in the topologically trivial phase where no edge modes exist. Altogether, these establish zero-$π$ Floquet topology as a necessary condition and coherent nonequilibrium preparation as the additional sufficient ingredient. Our results identify entanglement spectroscopy as a sharp subsystem-resolved probe of Floquet topological coherence.
