Abstract

Bosonic Gaussian states are a special class of quantum states in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space that are relevant to universal continuous-variable quantum computation as well as to near-term quantum sampling tasks such as Gaussian Boson Sampling. In this work, we study entanglement within a set of squeezed modes that have been evolved by a random linear optical unitary. We first derive formulas that are asymptotically exact in the number of modes for the Rényi-2 Page curve (the average Rényi-2 entropy of a subsystem of a pure bosonic Gaussian state) and the corresponding Page correction (the average information of the subsystem) in certain squeezing regimes. We then prove various results on the typicality of entanglement as measured by the Rényi-2 entropy by studying its variance. Using the aforementioned results for the Rényi-2 entropy, we upper and lower bound the von Neumann entropy Page curve and prove certain regimes of entanglement typicality as measured by the von Neumann entropy. Our main proofs make use of a symmetry property obeyed by the average and the variance of the entropy that dramatically simplifies the averaging over unitaries. In this light, we propose future research directions where this symmetry might also be exploited. We conclude by discussing potential applications of our results and their generalizations to Gaussian Boson Sampling and to illuminating the relationship between entanglement and computational complexity.

Average Rényi entanglement entropy in Gaussian boson sampling

Jason Youm, Joseph T. Iosue, Adam Ehrenberg +2 more

Recently, many experiments have been conducted with the goal of demonstrating a quantum advantage over classical computation. One popular framework for these experiments is Gaussian boson sampling, where quadratic photonic input states are interfered via a linear optical unitary and subsequently measured in the Fock basis. In this paper, we study the modal entanglement of the output states in this framework just before the measurement stage. Specifically, we compute Page curves as measured by various Rényi- α entropies, where the Page curve describes the entanglement between two partitioned groups of output modes averaged over all linear optical unitaries. We derive these formulas for α = 1 (i.e., the von Neumann entropy) and, more generally, for all positive integer α , in the asymptotic limit of infinite number of modes and for input states that are composed of single-mode-squeezed-vacuum state with equal squeezing strength. We then analyze the limiting behaviors when the squeezing is small and large. Having determined the averages, we then explicitly calculate the Rényi- α variance for integers α > 1 and are able to show that these entropies are weakly typical.

Anticoncentration and entanglement in Gaussian boson sampling

Laura Shou, Adam Ehrenberg, Yu-Xin Wang +2 more

Anticoncentration and entanglement are two properties used to study classical hardness or easiness of Gaussian boson sampling in varying regimes. In this paper, we consider three directions concerning anticoncentration and entanglement in Gaussian boson sampling: (1) We derive closed-form expressions for the second moment of hafnians of symmetric Gaussian products, and use this to precisely locate the anticoncentration transition as a function of the number of squeezed input modes. (2) We derive closed-form expressions for the Rényi-$α$ Page curves for Gaussian boson sampling. (3) We study unequal input squeezing parameters $(s_i)_i$, and prove estimates as well as monotonicity of the average-case Rényi-2 entropy Page curve in terms of the magnitudes $|s_i|$, which allow for extending equal squeezing results to unequal squeezing.

Weak Typicality of von Neumann Entanglement Entropy in Gaussian Boson Sampling

Hongru Zhao

We study the von Neumann entanglement entropy generated by a Haar distributed passive interferometer acting on $n$ equally squeezed input modes with fixed nonzero squeezing strength $s$. Previous work established proportional weak typicality for integer R'enyi orders $α\geq 2$ and stated a sublinear von Neumann result, while the proportional von Neumann case remained open. For a subsystem of $k_n$ modes satisfying $k_n/n\to r\in(0,1)$, we prove that, for every $\varepsilon>0$ and all sufficiently large $n$, $\mathbb{P}\left(\left|\frac{S_{1,n}}{\mathbb{E}S_{1,n}}-1\right|\geq\varepsilon\right)\leq2\exp\left[-\frac{c_{s,r}\varepsilon^2n^2}{\log^2(en)}\right].$ The proof represents the entropy as a singular value statistic of a principal block of $UU^{\mathsf T}$, where $U$ denotes the unitary interferometer. It regularizes the logarithmic singularity at the endpoint corresponding to a pure Gaussian mode and applies concentration on the unitary group. The result establishes proportional von Neumann weak typicality and further implies almost sure convergence of $S_{1,n}/\mathbb{E}S_{1,n}$ to $1$, a typical volume law, and the variance bound $\mathrm{Var}(S_{1,n})=O_s(\log^2 n)$. An accompanying Lean 4 development verifies the proof chain.

Typical entanglement in anyon chains: Page curves beyond Lie group symmetries

Yale Yauk, Lucas Hackl, Alexander Hahn

We study bipartite entanglement statistics in one-dimensional anyon chains, whose Hilbert spaces are constrained by fusion rules of unitary pre-modular categories. Our setup generalizes previous frameworks on symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy for non-abelian Lie group symmetries to the setting of quantum groups. We derive analytical expressions for the average anyonic entanglement entropy and its variance. Surprisingly, despite the constrained Hilbert space structure, the large $L$ expansion has no universal $O(\sqrt{L})$ or $O(1)$ symmetry-type corrections except for a subleading topological correction term that produces a Page curve asymmetry. We further show that the variance decays exponentially with system size, establishing the typicality. Numerical simulations of the integrable and quantum-chaotic golden chain Hamiltonian show that chaotic mid-spectrum eigenstates match the Haar-random predictions, supporting the use of eigenstate entanglement as a diagnostic of quantum chaos. Our results establish the anyonic Page curve as an appropriate chaotic benchmark in topological many-body systems and connect anyonic entanglement to Page-type universality in quantum many-body physics.

Entanglement in the full state vector of boson sampling

Yulong Qiao, Joonsuk Huh, Frank Großmann

The full state vector of boson sampling is generated by passing S S single photons through beam splitters of M M modes. We express the initial Fock state in terms of 2 ^{S-1} S − 1 generalized coherent states, making possible the exact application of the unitary evolution. Due to the favorable polynomial scaling of numerical effort in M M , we can investigate Rényi entanglement entropies for moderate particle and huge mode numbers. We find symmetric Page curves with a maximum entropy at equal partition, which is almost independent on Rényi index. Furthermore, the maximum entropy as a function of mode index saturates for M\geq S^2 M ≥ S 2 in the collision-free subspace case. The asymptotic value of the entropy increases linearly with S S . In addition, we show that the build-up of the entanglement leads to a cusp in the asymmetric entanglement curve. Maximum entanglement is reached well before the mode population is distributed over the whole system.

Entanglement dynamics and Page curves in random permutation circuits

Dávid Szász-Schagrin, Michele Mazzoni, Bruno Bertini +2 more

The characterization of ensembles of many-qubit random states and their realization via quantum circuits are crucial tasks in quantum-information theory. In this work, we study the ensembles generated by quantum circuits that randomly permute the computational basis, thus acting classically on the corresponding states. We focus on the averaged entanglement and present two main results. First, we derive generically tight upper bounds on the entanglement that can be generated by applying permutation circuits to arbitrary initial states. We show that the late-time “entanglement Page curves” are bounded in terms of the initial state participation entropies and their overlap with the “maximally antilocalized” state. Generally speaking, this result states that the quantum correlations generated by classical circuits are bounded in terms of some quantum property of the initial state (namely, the degree to which it can be written as a superposition of classical states). Second, comparing the averaged Rényi-2 entropies generated by ( 1 ) an infinitely deep random circuit of two-qubit gates and ( 2 ) global random permutations, we show that the two quantities are different for finite N but the corresponding Page curves coincide in the thermodynamic limit. We also discuss how these conclusions are modified by additional random phases or considering circuits of k -local gates with k ≥ 3 . Our results are exact and highlight the implications of classical features on entanglement generation in many-body systems.
