Sudden quench of harmonically trapped mass-imbalanced fermions

Abstract

Dynamical properties of two-component mass-imbalanced few-fermion systems confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap following a sudden quench of interactions are studied. It is assumed that initially the system is prepared in the non-interacting ground state and then, after a sudden quench of interactions, the unitary evolution is governed by interacting many-body Hamiltonian. By careful analysis of the evolution of the Loschmidt echo, density distributions of the components, and entanglement entropy between them, the role of mass imbalance and particle number imbalance on the system's evolution stability are investigated. All the quantities studied manifest a dramatic dependence on the number of heavy and lighter fermions in each component at a given quench strength. The results may have implications for upcoming experiments on fermionic mixtures with a well-defined and small number of particles.

Unconventional pairing in one-dimensional systems of a few mass-imbalanced ultracold fermions

Patrycja Łydżba, Tomasz Sowiński

We study the ground-state properties of a two-component fermionic mixture effectively confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. We consider scenarios when numbers of particles in components are the same but particles have different masses. We examine whether it is possible to detect signatures of an unconventional pairing between opposite-spin fermions in the presence of attractive interactions. For this purpose, we perform the exact diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian and study the two-particle reduced density matrix. In agreement with expectations, we confirm that the many-body ground state is dominated by conventional pairs with a negligible total momentum for a small mass imbalance. Furthermore, we show that for sufficiently large mass ratios the domination of fundamentally different pairs is established and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase is supported. Finally, we argue that the two mechanisms can coexist in the regime of moderate mass ratios. Due to the current experimental progress in obtaining ultracold fermionic systems in a few-body regime, our predictions may have some importance for the upcoming experiments.

Intercomponent correlations in attractive one-dimensional mass-imbalanced few-body mixtures

Daniel Pęcak, Tomasz Sowiński

Ground-state properties of a few attractively interacting ultracold atoms of different mass confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap are studied. The analysis is performed in terms of the noise correlation, which captures the two-particle correlations induced by the mutual interactions. Depending on the mass ratio between the components' atoms, the interparticle correlations change their properties significantly from a strong pairlike correlation to an almost uncorrelated phase. This change is accompanied by a simultaneous change in the structure of the many-body ground state. A crucial role of the quantum statistics is emphasized by comparing properties of the Fermi-Fermi mixture with a corresponding Fermi-Bose system.

Two-component few-fermion mixtures in a one-dimensional trap: Numerical versus analytical approach

Ioannis Brouzos, Peter Schmelcher

We explore a few-fermion mixture consisting of two components that are repulsively interacting and confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. Different scenarios of population imbalance ranging from the completely imbalanced case where the physics of a single impurity in the Fermi sea is discussed to the partially imbalanced and equal population configurations are investigated. For the numerical calculations the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method is employed, extending its application to few-fermion systems. Apart from numerical calculations we generalize our ansatz for a correlated pair wave function proposed recently [I. Brouzos and P. Schmelcher, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 045301 (2012)] for bosons to mixtures of fermions. From weak to strong coupling between the components the energies, the densities and the correlation properties of one-dimensional systems change vastly with an upper limit set by fermionization where for infinite repulsion all fermions can be mapped to identical ones. The numerical and analytical treatments are in good agreement with respect to the description of this crossover. We show that for equal populations each pair of different component atoms splits into two single peaks in the density while for partial imbalance additional peaks and plateaus arise for very strong interaction strengths. The case of a single-impurity atom shows rich behavior of the energy and density as we approach fermionization and is directly connected to recent experiments [G. Z\"urn et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 075303 (2012)].

Quantum dynamics of two trapped bosons following infinite interaction quenches

Leonhard M. A. Kehrberger, Valentin Bolsinger, Peter Schmelcher

We investigate the quantum dynamics of two identical bosons in a one-dimensional harmonic trap following an interaction quench from zero to infinite interaction strength and vice versa. For both quench scenarios, closed analytical expressions for the temporal evolution of the wave function as well as the Loschmidt echo are found and the dynamics of the momentum density as well as the reduced single-particle density matrix are analyzed. We observe a crossover of these quantities between bosonic, ``symmetrized'' fermionic, and fermionic properties. Furthermore, several combined quenches are analyzed as well.

Dynamical properties of a few mass-imbalanced ultra-cold fermions confined in a double-well potential

Dillip K Nandy, Tomasz Sowiński

Abstract A comprehensive analysis of the exact unitary dynamics of two-component mass-imbalanced fermions in a one-dimensional double-well potential is accomplished by considering the total number of particles maximum up to six. The simultaneous effect of mass imbalance between the flavors and their mutual interactions on the dynamics is scrutinized through the exact diagonalization. In particular, we investigate the occupation dynamics of such systems being initially prepared in experimentally accessible states in which opposite components occupy opposite wells. Moreover, to capture the role of interactions, we also inspect situations in which initial states contain an opposite-spin pair localized in a chosen well. Finally, to assess the amount of quantum correlations produced during the evolution, we analyze the behavior of the von Neumann entanglement entropy between components.

Mass-imbalanced fermionic mixture in a harmonic trap

Betzalel Bazak

The mass-imbalanced fermionic mixture is studied, where $N\ensuremath{\le}5$ identical fermions interact resonantly with an impurity, a distinguishable atom. The shell structure is explored, and the physics of a dynamic light-impurity is shown to be different from that of the static heavy-impurity case. The energies in a harmonic trap at unitarity are calculated and extrapolated to the zero-range limit. In doing so, the scale factor of the ground state, as well as of a few excited states, is calculated. In the $2\ensuremath{\le}N\ensuremath{\le}4$ systems, pure $(N+1)$ Efimov states exist for large enough mass ratio. However, no sign for a six-body Efimov state in the $(5+1)$ system is found in the mass ratio explored, $M/m\ensuremath{\le}12$.
