Abstract

We study the phase diagram of the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with uniaxial anisotropy and applied magnetic field in terms of the genuine multipartite entanglement as witnessed by the mean quantum Fisher information density. By considering the manifold generated by the staggered magnetization operator, we connect the state space curvature in the vicinity of the ground state of the Heisenberg chain to the genuine multipartite entanglement. Our analysis demonstrates that the quantum critical points and symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase exhibit large state space curvature, while the separable phases are completely flat, offering insight into the physical interpretation of state space curvature. We further show that the entanglement in the SPT phase is enhanced by the presence of uniaxial anisotropy and undiminished in the presence of uniform magnetic fields. The magnon condensate phase induced by large fields is shown to emanate from the Gaussian critical point and exhibits massive multipartite entanglement over a robust region of the parameter space.

Estimates of the quantum Fisher information in the S = 1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain with uniaxial anisotropy

J. Lambert, Erik Schwartz Sørensen

The quantum Fisher information is of considerable interest not only for quantum metrology but also because it is a useful entanglement measure for finite temperature mixed states. In particular, it estimates the degree to which multipartite entanglement is present. Recent results have related the quantum Fisher information to experimentally measurable probes. While in principle possible, a direct evaluation of the quantum Fisher information at finite temperatures is technically challenging and here we show that a simple estimate can be obtained for materials where the single-mode approximation is valid. We focus on the $S=1$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with uniaxial anisotropy. Quantum Monte Carlo techniques are used to determine low-temperature correlations from which the quantum Fisher information can be estimated within the single-mode approximation. The quantum Fisher information is compared to the quantum variance for the staggered magnetization operators in the transverse direction and inequalities between the quantum Fisher information, the quantum variance, and the full variance are discussed. Both the quantum and full variance as well as the quantum Fisher information are examined at finite temperatures above the isotropic point and at the quantum critical point for the Haldane-N\'eel transition. A finite size scaling study of the quantum Fisher information is performed at the quantum critical point and used to confirm the Ising nature of the Haldane-N\'eel transition.

All spin-1 topological phases in a single spin-2 chain

Augustine Kshetrimayum, Hong-Hao Tu, Román Orús

Here we study the emergence of different symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in a spin-2 quantum chain. We consider a Heisenberg-like model with bilinear, biquadratic, bicubic, and biquartic nearest-neighbor interactions, as well as uniaxial anisotropy. We show that this model contains four different effective spin-1 SPT phases, corresponding to different representations of the $({\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2})+T$ symmetry group, where ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ is some $\ensuremath{\pi}$ rotation in the spin internal space and $T$ is time reversal. One of these phases is equivalent to the usual spin-1 Haldane phase, while the other three are different but also typical of spin-1 systems. The model also exhibits an $SO(5)$-Haldane phase. Moreover, we also find that the transitions between the different effective spin-1 SPT phases are continuous and can be described by a $c=2$ conformal field theory. At such transitions, indirect evidence suggests a possible effective field theory of four massless Majorana fermions. The results are obtained by approximating the ground state of the system in the thermodynamic limit using matrix product states via the infinite time-evolving block decimation method, as well as by effective field theory considerations. Our findings show that different large effective spin-1 SPT phases separated by continuous quantum phase transitions can be stabilized in a simple quantum spin chain.

Critical-entanglement spectrum of one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological phases

Wen-Jia Rao, Xin Wan, Guang-Ming Zhang

Under an appropriate symmetric extensive bipartition in a one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase, a bulk critical-entanglement spectrum can be obtained, resembling the excitation spectrum of the critical point separating the SPT phase from the trivial (vacuum) state. Such a critical point is beyond the standard Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm for symmetry-breaking phase transitions. For the $S=1$ SPT (Haldane) phase with the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki exact wave function, the resulting critical-entanglement spectrum has a residual entropy per lattice site ${s}_{r}=0.67602$, showing a delocalized version of the edge excitations in the SPT phase. From the wave function corresponding to the lowest entanglement energy level, the central charge of the critical point can be extracted $c\ensuremath{\approx}1.01\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01$. The critical theory can be identified as the same effective field theory as the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain or the spin-1/2 Haldane-Shastry model with inverse-square long-range interaction.

Characterizing the Haldane phase in quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Keola Wierschem, Pinaki Sengupta

We review the basic properties of the Haldane phase in spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains, including its persistence in quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) geometries. Using large-scale numerical simulations, we map out the phase diagram for a realistic model applicable to experimental Haldane compounds. We also investigate the effect of different chain coupling geometries and confirm a general mean-field universality of the critical coupling times the coordination number of the lattice. Inspired by recent developments in the characterization of symmetry protected topological (SPT) states, of which the Haldane phase of the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is a preeminent example, we provide direct evidence that the Q1D Haldane phase is indeed a nontrivial SPT state.

Distinct Trivial Phases Protected by a Point-Group Symmetry in Quantum Spin Chains

Yohei Fuji, Frank Pollmann, Masaki Oshikawa

The ground state of the S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain belongs to the Haldane phase--a well-known example of the symmetry-protected topological phase. A staggered field applied to the S=1 antiferromagnetic chain breaks all the symmetries that protect the Haldane phase as a topological phase, reducing it to a trivial phase. That is, the Haldane phase is then connected adiabatically to an antiferromagnetic product state. Nevertheless, as long as the symmetry under site-centered inversion combined with a spin rotation is preserved, the phase is still distinct from another trivial phase. We demonstrate the existence of such distinct symmetry-protected trivial phases using a field-theoretical approach and numerical calculations. Furthermore, a general proof and a nonlocal order parameter are given in terms of a matrix-product state formulation.

Detection of symmetry-protected topological phases in one dimension with multiscale entanglement renormalization

Hsueh-Wen Chang, Yun-Da Hsieh, Ying-Jer Kao

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are short-range entangled quantum phases with symmetry, which have gapped excitations in the bulk and gapless modes at the edge. In this paper, we study the SPT phases in the spin-1 Heisenberg chain with a single-ion anisotropy D, which has a quantum phase transition between a Haldane phase and a large-D phase. Using symmetric multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) tensor networks, we study the nonlocal order parameters for time-reversal and inversion symmetry. For the inversion symmetric MERA, we propose a brick-and-rope representation that gives a geometrical interpretation of inversion symmetric tensors. Finally, we study the symmetric renormalization group (RG) flow of the inversion symmetric string-order parameter, and show that entanglement renormalization with symmetric tensors produces proper behavior of the RG fixed-points.
