Abstract

Abstract We explore the question of finiteness of the entanglement entropy in gravitational theories whose emergent space is the target space of a holographic dual. In the well studied duality of two-dimensional non-critical string theory and c = 1 matrix model, this question has been studied earlier using fermionic many-body theory in the space of eigenvalues. The entanglement entropy of a subregion of the eigenvalue space, which is the target space entanglement in the matrix model, is finite, with the scale being provided by the local Fermi momentum. The Fermi momentum is, however, a position dependent string coupling, as is clear in the collective field theory formulation. This suggests that the finiteness is a non-perturbative effect. We provide evidence for this expectation by an explicit calculation in the collective field theory of matrix quantum mechanics with vanishing potential. The leading term in the cumulant expansion of the entanglement entropy is calculated using exact eigenstates and eigenvalues of the collective Hamiltonian, yielding a finite result, in precise agreement with the fermion answer. Treating the theory perturbatively, we show that each term in the perturbation expansion is UV divergent. However the series can be resummed, yielding the exact finite result. Our results indicate that the finiteness of the entanglement entropy for higher dimensional string theories is non-perturbative as well, with the scale provided by Newton’s constant.

Comments on entanglement entropy in the c = 1 string theory

Ben Craps, Marius Gerbershagen, Maxim Pavlov +1 more

A bstract We study entanglement entropy in the low-energy effective field theory of two-dimensional string theory as well as in the singlet sector of the dual c = 1 matrix quantum mechanics. From the target space perspective, we argue that a generic bulk subregion is expected to have an associated generalized entanglement entropy combining a dilaton-dependent gravitational term and a matter contribution coming from the tachyon, extending the construction from black hole horizons to arbitrary subregions. Motivated by the absence of the gravitational area-like term in previous analyses of entanglement entropy in the c = 1 model, we compute the effect on the entanglement entropy of the nonlocal transformation induced by the leg-pole factor that relates the target space tachyon and the matrix model collective excitations, finding that it cannot account for the area-like term. We offer preliminary comments on the possible origin of the area term in the non-singlet sectors of the theory.

Area terms and entanglement entropy in the $c=1$ string theory

We study entanglement entropy in the low-energy effective field theory of two-dimensional string theory as well as in the singlet sector of the dual $c=1$ matrix quantum mechanics. From the target space perspective, we argue that a generic bulk subregion is expected to have an associated generalized entanglement entropy combining a dilaton-dependent gravitational term and a matter contribution coming from the tachyon. Given that the gravitational area-like term is absent in previous analyses of entanglement entropy in the $c=1$ model, we examine several possible mechanisms for its emergence. We show that the nonlocal transformation induced by the leg-pole factor that relates the target space tachyon and the matrix model collective excitations cannot account for the area-like term, and we comment on its possible origin in the non-singlet sectors of the theory.

Entanglement entropy and the large N expansion of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

William Donnelly, Sydney Timmerman, Nicolás Valdés-Meller

Abstract Two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory is a useful model of an exactly solvable gauge theory with a string theory dual at large N. We calculate entanglement entropy in the 1/N expansion by mapping the theory to a system of N fermions interacting via a repulsive entropic force. The entropy is a sum of two terms: the “Boltzmann entropy,” log dim(R) per point of the entangling surface, which counts the number of distinct microstates, and the “Shannon entropy,” − Σ p R log p R , which captures fluctuations of the macroscopic state. We find that the entropy scales as N 2 in the large N limit, and that at this order only the Boltzmann entropy contributes. We further show that the Shannon entropy scales linearly with N, and confirm this behaviour with numerical simulations. While the term of order N is surprising from the point of view of the string dual — in which only even powers of N appear in the partition function — we trace it to a breakdown of large N counting caused by the replica trick. This mechanism could lead to corrections to holographic entanglement entropy larger than expected from semiclassical field theory.

Entanglement Entropy in Two-Dimensional String Theory

Sean A. Hartnoll, Edward A. Mazenc

To understand an emergent spacetime is to understand the emergence of locality. Entanglement entropy is a powerful diagnostic of locality, because locality leads to a large amount of short distance entanglement. Two-dimensional string theory is among the very simplest instances of an emergent spatial dimension. We compute the entanglement entropy in the large-N matrix quantum mechanics dual to two-dimensional string theory in the semiclassical limit of weak string coupling. We isolate a logarithmically large, but finite, contribution that corresponds to the short distance entanglement of the tachyon field in the emergent spacetime. From the spacetime point of view, the entanglement is regulated by a nonperturbative "graininess" of space.

Bulk emergence and the RG flow of entanglement entropy

Thomas Faulkner

We further develop perturbative methods used to calculate entanglement entropy (EE) away from an interacting CFT fixed point. At second order we find certain universal terms in the renormalized EE which were predicted previously from holography and which we find hold universally for relevant deformations of any CFT in any dimension. We use both replica methods and direct methods to calculate the EE and in both cases find a non-local integral expression involving the CFT two point function. We show that this integral expression can be written as a local integral over a higher dimensional bulk modular hamiltonian in an emergent AdS space-time. This bulk modular hamiltonian is associated to an emergent scalar field dual to the deforming operator. We generalize to arbitrary spatially dependent couplings where a linearized metric emerges naturally as a way of efficiently encoding the field theory entanglement: by demanding that Einstein’s equations coupled to the bulk scalar field are satisfied, we show that EE can be calculated as the area of this metric. Not only does this show a direct emergence of a higher dimensional gravitational theory from any CFT, it allows for effective evaluation of the the integrals required to calculate EE perturbativly. Our results can also be interpreted as relating the non-locality of the modular hamiltonian for a spherical region in non-CFTs and the non-locality of the holographic bulk to boundary map.

Holographic entanglement entropy : structure and applications from noncommutative field theories to energy conditions

Charles Rabideau

The holographic Ryu-Takayanagi formula for entanglement entropy connects the entanglement of a field theory to the geometry of a dual gravitational theory in a straightforward and universal way. The first part of this thesis applies this formula to study the entanglement entropy in strongly coupled noncommutative field theories. It is found that the ground state of these theories have substantial entanglement at the length scale of the noncommutativity. The entanglement entropy in a different perturbative regime is also computed, where in contrast it is found that noncommutative interactions do not induce long range entanglement in the ground state to leading order in perturbations theory. The second part of this thesis explores some general consequences of this holographic formula for the entanglement entropy. Identities involving entanglement entropies are related to nontrivial geometric constraints on gravitational duals. In particular, the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy is used to show that dual three dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter gravitational states must obey an averaged null energy condition. Finally, this holographic formula allows us at least in principle to express the entanglement entropy of a region in a holographic field theory in terms of the one-point functions in that theory. This is explored in the context of a two dimensional conformal field theory where explicit calculations are possible. Our results in this case allow us to extend a recent proposal that the entanglement entropy of states near the vacuum of conformal theories can be understood by propagation in an auxiliary de Sitter space.
