Abstract

We determine the conditions for the equivalence between the multi-time expectation values of a general finite-dimensional open quantum system when interacting with, respectively, an environment undergoing a free unitary evolution or a discrete environment under a free evolution fixed by a proper Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan generator. We prove that the equivalence holds if both environments are bosonic and Gaussian and if the one- and two-time correlation functions of the corresponding interaction operators are the same at all times. This result leads to a non-perturbative evaluation of the multi-time expectation values of operators and maps of open quantum systems interacting with a continuous set of bosonic modes by means of a limited number of damped modes, thus setting the ground for the investigation of open-system multi-time quantities in fully general regimes.

Nonperturbative Treatment of non-Markovian Dynamics of Open Quantum Systems

Dario Tamascelli, Andrea Smirne, S. F. Huelga +1 more

We identify the conditions that guarantee equivalence of the reduced dynamics of an open quantum system (OQS) for two different types of environments-one a continuous bosonic environment leading to a unitary system-environment evolution and the other a discrete-mode bosonic environment resulting in a system-mode (nonunitary) Lindbladian evolution. Assuming initial Gaussian states for the environments, we prove that the two OQS dynamics are equivalent if both the expectation values and two-time correlation functions of the environmental interaction operators are the same at all times for the two configurations. Since the numerical and analytical description of a discrete-mode environment undergoing a Lindbladian evolution is significantly more efficient than that of a continuous bosonic environment in a unitary evolution, our result represents a powerful, nonperturbative tool to describe complex and possibly highly non-Markovian dynamics. As a special application, we recover and generalize the well-known pseudomodes approach to open-system dynamics.

Markovian treatment of non-Markovian dynamics of open Fermionic systems

Feng Chen, Enrico Arrigoni, Michael Galperin

Abstract\n We show that an open fermionic system coupled to a continuous environment with unitary system-environment evolution can be exactly mapped onto an auxiliary system consisting of the physical fermion system and a set of discrete fermionic modes subject to non-unitary Lindblad-type system-modes evolution in such a way that reduced dynamics of the fermionic system in the two cases are the same. Conditions for equivalence of reduced dynamics in the two systems are identified and a proof is presented. Our study extends recent work on Bose systems (Tamascelli et al 2018 Phys. Rev. Lett. 120 030402) to the case of open quantum Fermi systems and to multi-time correlation functions. Numerical simulations within a generic junction model are presented for illustration.

A perturbation theory for multi-time correlation functions in open quantum systems

Piotr Szańkowski

Dynamical maps are the principal subject of the open system theory. Formally, the dynamical map of a given open quantum system is a density matrix transformation that takes any initial state and sends it to the state at a later time. Physically, it encapsulates the system’s evolution due to coupling with its environment. Hence, the theory provides a flexible and accurate framework for computing expectation values of open system observables. However, expectation values-or more generally, single-time correlation functions-capture only the simplest aspects of a quantum system’s dynamics. A complete characterization of the dynamics requires access to multi-time correlation functions as well: phenomena like detailed balance, linear and non-linear response, non-equilibrium transport in general, or even sequential measurements of system observables are all described in terms of multi-time correlations. For closed systems, such correlations are well-defined, even though knowledge of the system’s state alone is insufficient to determine them fully. In contrast, the standard dynamical map formalism for open systems does not account for multi-time correlations, as it is fundamentally limited to describing state evolution. Here, we extend the scope of open quantum system theory by developing a systematic perturbation theory for computing multi-time correlation functions.

Game of Nons: Non-Gaussian Nonunitary Environments with Nonlinear Coupling

Artem Karasev, Alexander Teretenkov

We develop a perturbative framework for systems coupled quadratically to bosonic environments with quadratic Hamiltonians and linear Lindblad operators. The method applies to both single-mode and multimode environments whose initial states may be non-Gaussian and nonstationary. By combining linear evolution in a doubled operator space with a characteristic-function representation, we express ordered multitime environmental correlation functions in terms of derivatives of the initial characteristic function. These correlation functions enter a recursive construction of the time-convolutionless generator at arbitrary finite order. We illustrate the method with a qubit coupled to a damped mode via a two-photon interaction. Initial Fock and thermal states with identical first and second field moments produce different second-order generators through their fourth moments.

On Non-Gaussian Linear Quantum Optics

Alexander Evgen’evich Teretenkov

Abstract This paper studies a class of single-mode bosonic models of open quantum systems in which the dynamics of the creation and annihilation operators remains linear despite the strongly non-Gaussian nature of the induced dissipation. It is shown that, in contrast to isolated bosonic systems—where linear dynamics uniquely corresponds to quadratic Hamiltonians and Gaussian states—linearity of the operator dynamics in open systems does not guarantee Gaussianity of the state evolution. We construct quantum channels and Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan–Lindblad generators for which the dynamics of the creation and annihilation operators is linear and closed, while Gaussian states are driven beyond the convex hull of Gaussian states during the evolution. In particular, the emergence of negativity of the Wigner function at a finite evolution time is demonstrated.
