Abstract

We study motion of dark solitons in a non-uniform one-dimensional flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate. Our approach is based on Hamiltonian mechanics applied to the particle-like behavior of dark solitons in a slightly non-uniform and slowly changing surrounding. In one-dimensional geometry, the condensate's wave function undergoes the jump-like behavior across the soliton, and this leads to generation of the counterflow in the background condensate. For a correct description of soliton's dynamics, the contributions of this counterflow to the momentum and energy of the soliton are taken into account. The resulting Hamilton equations are reduced to the Newton-like equation for the soliton's path, and this Newton equation is solved in several typical situations. The analytical results are confirmed by numerical calculations.

Dark soliton beats in the time-varying background of Bose-Einstein condensates

Lei Wu, Lu Li, Jie-Fang Zhang

We investigate the dynamics of dark solitons in one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. In the large particle limit, by introducing the lens-type transformation, we find that the macroscopic wave function evolves self-similarly when its initial profile strays from that of the equilibrium state, which provides a time-varying background for the propagation of dark solitons. The interaction of dark solitons with this kind of background is studied both analytically and numerically. We find that the center-of-mass motion of the dark soliton is deeply affected by the time-varying background, and the beating phenomena of dark soliton emerge when the intrinsic frequency of the dark soliton approaches that of the background. Lastly, we investigate the propagation of dark solitons in the freely expanding background.

Generation of Dark-Bright Soliton Trains in Superfluid-Superfluid Counterflow

Chris Hamner, JiaJia Chang, Peter Engels +1 more

The dynamics of two penetrating superfluids exhibit an intriguing variety of nonlinear effects. Using two distinguishable components of a Bose-Einstein condensate, we investigate the counterflow of two superfluids in a narrow channel. We present the first experimental observation of trains of dark-bright solitons generated by the counterflow. Our observations are theoretically interpreted by three-dimensional numerical simulations for the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations and the analysis of a jump in the two relatively flowing components' densities. Counterflow-induced modulational instability for this miscible system is identified as the central process in the dynamics.

Dynamics of ring solitons in an expanding cloud of a Bose-Einstein condensate

A. M. Kamchatnov, Bulat Irekovich Suleimanov, E. N. Tsoy

In this paper, we derive equations for the dynamics of ring dark solitons in an expanding cloud of a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. Assuming that the soliton's width is much smaller than its radius, we obtain the Hamilton equations for its evolution. Then they are transformed into the Newton equation, which is more convenient for applications. The general theory is illustrated by the solution of the Newton equation for the case of the axially symmetric condensate cloud, which expands after switching off a harmonic trap. The validity of our approximate analytical approach is confirmed by comparison with the results of numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Evolution of a dark soliton in a parabolic potential: Application to Bose-Einstein condensates

Valeriy A. Brazhnyi, V. V. Konotop

Evolution of a dark soliton in a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate trapped by a harmonic potential is studied analytically and numerically. In the case of a deep soliton, main characteristics of its motion such as frequency and amplitude of oscillations are calculated by means of the perturbation theory which in the leading order results in a Newtonian dynamics, corrections to which are computed as well.

Motion of Dark Solitons in Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates

Thomas Busch, J. R. Anglin

We use a multiple time scale boundary layer theory to derive the equation of motion for a dark (or grey) soliton propagating through an effectively one-dimensional cloud of Bose-Einstein condensate, assuming only that the background density and velocity vary slowly on the soliton scale. We show that solitons can exhibit viscous or radiative acceleration (antidamping), which we estimate as slow but observable on experimental time scales.

On creation and evolution of dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Valeriy A. Brazhnyi, A. M. Kamchatnov, V. V. Konotop

Generation of dark solitons from large initial excitations and their evolution in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate trapped by a harmonic potential is studied analytically and numerically. In the case of a single deep soliton main characteristics of its motion such as a frequency and amplitude of oscillations are calculated by means of the perturbation theory which in the leading order results in a Newtonian dynamics, corrections to which are computed as well. It is shown that long-time dynamics of a dark soliton in a generic situation deviates substantially from outcomes of the naive application of the Ehrenfest theorem. We also consider three different techniques of controllable creation of multi-soliton structures (soliton trains) from large initial excitations and calculate their initial parameters (depths and velocities) with the use of a generalized Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule. Multi-soliton effects are discussed.
