Abstract

Projective quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement is important for quantum technologies. Here we propose a method for constructing projective QND measurement on a nuclear spin via the measurement of an axillary electron spin in generic electron-nuclear spin systems coupled through weak hyperfine interaction. The key idea is to apply suitable quantum control on the electron to construct a weak QND measurement on the nuclear spin and then cascade a sequence of such measurements into a projective one. We identify a set of tunable parameters to select the QND observables and control the strength of the weak QND measurement. We also find that the QND measurement can be stabilized against realistic experimental control errors. As a demonstration of our method, we design projective QND measurement on a $^{13}$C nuclear spin weakly coupled to a nitrogen-vacancy center electron spin in diamond.

Using Weak Measurements to Synthesize Projective Measurement of Nonconserved Observables of Weakly Coupled Nuclear Spins

Projective quantum measurement is fundamental for quantum technologies. Here we propose a method for construction of projective measurement of nonconserved quantity of nuclear spin via a weakly coupled auxiliary electron spin. The key idea is to apply suitable quantum control on the electron to construct a weak quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement on the nuclear spin and then cascade a sequence of such measurements into a projective one. We identify a set of tunable parameters to select the QND observables and control the strength of the weak QND measurement. We also find that the QND measurement can be stabilized against realistic experimental control errors. As a demonstration of our method, we design projective measurement on a ${}^{13}\mathrm{C}$ nuclear spin weakly coupled to a nitrogen-vacancy center electron spin in diamond.

Quantum measurement of hyperfine interaction in nitrogen-vacancy center

Kilhyun Bang, Wen Li Yang, Lu Jeu Sham

We propose an efficient quantum measurement protocol for the hyperfine interaction between the electron spin and the $^{15}$N nuclear spin of a diamond nitrogen-vacancy center. In this protocol, a sequence of quantum operations of successively increasing duration is utilized to estimate the hyperfine interaction with successively higher precision approaching the quantum metrology limit. This protocol does not need the preparation of the nuclear spin state. In the presence of realistic operation errors and electron spin decoherence, the overall precision of our protocol still surpasses the standard quantum limit.

Arbitrary nuclear-spin gates in diamond mediated by a nitrogen-vacancy-center electron spin

Jorge Casanova, Z.-Y. Wang, Martin Bodo Plenio

We show that arbitrary $N$-qubit interactions among nuclear spins can be achieved efficiently in solid state quantum platforms, such as nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond, by exerting control only on the electron spin coupled to the nuclei. This allows to exploit nuclear spins as robust quantum registers and the direct measurement of nuclear many-body correlators. The method takes advantage of recently introduced dynamical decoupling techniques and avoids the necessity of external, slow, control on the nuclei. Our protocol is general, being applicable to other nuclear spin-based platforms with electronic spin defects acting as mediators as silicon carbide.

State Preparation and Metrology of Nitrogen Nuclear Spin in Diamond

Kilhyun Bang

A negatively-charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is a promising system for quantum computation and quantum information. It has the diamond structure with a substitutional nitrogen atom and a neighboring vacancy. An electron spin in the NV center has an exceptionally long coherence time at room temperature. Thus the NV center has a potential to realize a room-temperature quantum computer which is more efficient than a classical computer. In this dissertation, we focus on the nitrogen nuclear spin as well as the electron spin in the NV center. Every NV center has the nitrogen nuclear spin. Because of the long coherence time of the nitrogen nuclear spin, it is a good candidate for a quantum memory. Thus it is important to prepare the nitrogen nuclear spin qubit in a given pure state for quantum computation. We provide a theoretical understanding of the popular nuclear spin initialization technique. Furthermore, we propose an optimal condition for the initialization of the nitrogen nuclear spin by including the local strain in the NV center. We expect that this optimal condition can improve the purity of the nuclear spin initialization. We also propose an efficient quantum measurement protocol for the hyperfine interaction between the electron spin and the ¹⁵N nuclear spin in the NV center. A precise knowledge of the hyperfine interaction is important to reduce an error in a coherent control of the ¹⁵N nuclear spin. In this protocol, a sequence of quantum operations with successively increasing duration is utilized to estimate the hyperfine interaction with successively higher precision approaching the quantum metrology limit. Unlike common quantum metrological methods, this protocol does not need the preparation of the nuclear spin in a pure state. In the presence of realistic operation errors and electron spin decoherence, we show the overall precision of our protocol still surpasses the standard quantum limit

Quantum information processing with nuclear spins mediated by a weak-mechanically controlled electron spin

Wan-Jun Su, Guang-Zheng Ye, Yadong Wu +2 more

Abstract We propose a scheme to achieve nuclear–nuclear indirect interactions mediated by a mechanically driven nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in a diamond. Here we demonstrate two-qubit entangling gates and quantum-state transfer between two carbon nuclei. When the dipole–dipole interaction strength is much larger than the driving field strength, the scheme is robust against decoherence caused by coupling between the NV center (nuclear spins) and the environment. Conveniently, precise control of dipole coupling is not required so this scheme is insensitive to fluctuating positions of the nuclear spins and the NV center. Our scheme provides a general blueprint for multi-nuclear-spin gates and for multi-party communication.

Characterization of hyperfine interaction between single electron and single nuclear spins in diamond assisted by quantum beat from the nuclear spin

Jeong Hyun Shim, Nowak, B., I. Niemeyer +3 more

Precise characterization of a hyperfine interaction is a prerequisite for high fidelity manipulations of electron and nuclear spins belonging to a hybrid qubit register in diamond. Here, we demonstrate a novel scheme for determining a hyperfine interaction, using single-quantum and zero-quantum Ramsey fringes, by applying it to the system of a Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) center and a $^{13}$C nuclear spin in the 1$^{\mathrm{st}}$ shell. The zero-quantum Ramsey fringe, analogous to the quantum beat in a $Λ$-type level structure, particularly enhances the measurement precision for non-secular hyperfine terms. Precisions less than 0.5 MHz in the estimation of all the components in the hyperfine tensor were achieved. Furthermore, for the first time we experimentally determined the principal axes of the hyperfine interaction in the system. Beyond the 1$^{\mathrm{st}}$ shell, this method can be universally applied to other $^{13}$C nuclear spins interacting with the NV center.
