Abstract

A Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in a one-dimensional bichromatic optical lattice with constituent sublattices having incommensurate periods is considered. Using the rational approximations for the incommensurate periods, we show that below the mobility edge the localized states are distributed nearly homogeneously in the space and explore the versatility of such potentials. We show that superposition of symmetric and antisymmetric localized states can be used to simulate various physical dynamical regimes, known to occur in double-well and multiwell traps. As examples, we obtain an alternative realization of a bosonic Josephson junction, whose coherent oscillations display beatings or switching in the weakly nonlinear regime, and describe self-trapping and four-mode dynamics, mimicking coherent oscillations and self-trapping in four-well potentials. These phenomena can be observed for different pairs of modes, which are localized due to the interference rather than due to a confining trap. The results obtained using few-mode approximations are compared with the direct numerical simulations of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The localized states and the related dynamics are found to persist for long times even in the repulsive condensates. We also described bifurcations of the families of nonlinear modes, the symmetry breaking, and stable minigap solitons.

Localization of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a bichromatic optical lattice

Sadhan K. Adhikari, Luca Salasnich

By direct numerical simulation of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we study different aspects of the localization of a noninteracting ideal Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one-dimensional bichromatic quasiperiodic optical-lattice potential. Such a quasiperiodic potential, used in a recent experiment on the localization of a BEC [Roati et al., Nature (London) 453, 895 (2008)], can be formed by the superposition of two standing-wave polarized laser beams with different wavelengths. We investigate the effect of the variation of optical amplitudes and wavelengths on the localization of a noninteracting BEC. We also simulate the nonlinear dynamics when a harmonically trapped BEC is suddenly released into a quasiperiodic potential, as done experimentally in a laser speckle potential [Billy et al., Nature (London) 453, 891 (2008)]. We finally study the destruction of the localization in an interacting BEC due to the repulsion generated by a positive scattering length between the bosonic atoms.

Dimers and discrete breathers in Bose-Einstein condensates in a quasi-periodic potential

V. V. Konotop

A quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a quasi-periodic potential created by two sublattices of comparable amplitudes and incommensurate periods is considered. Although the conventional tight-binding approximation is not applicable in this setting, the description can still be reduced to a discrete model that accounts for the modes below the mobility edge. In the respective discrete lattice, where no linear hopping exists, solutions and their dynamics are governed solely by nonlinear interactions. Families of nonlinear modes, including those with no linear limit, are described with a special focus on dimers, which correspond to breather solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a quasi-periodic potential. The breathers are found to be stable for negative scattering lengths. Localization and stable propagation of breathers are also observed for positive scattering lengths at relatively weak and moderate nonlinearities. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional optical lattice with double-well potential

Hanlei Zheng, Qiang Gu

We study dynamical behaviors of the weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in the one-dimensional optical lattice with an overall double-well potential by solving the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. It is observed that the double-well potential dominates the dynamics of such a system even if the lattice depth is several times larger than the height of the double-well potential. This result suggests that the condensate flows without resistance in the periodic lattice just like the case of a single particle moving in periodic potentials. Nevertheless, the effective mass of atoms is increased, which can be experimentally verified since it is connected to the Josephson oscillation frequency. Moreover, the periodic lattice enhances the nonlinearity of the double-well condensate, making the condensate more “self-trapped” in the π -mode self-trapping regime.

Formation of nonlinear modes in one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattices with a mobility edge

Dmitry A. Zezyulin, Georgy Leonidovich Alfimov

We investigate the formation of steady states in one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates of repulsively interacting ultracold atoms loaded into a quasiperiodic potential created by two incommensurate periodic lattices. We study the transformations between linear and nonlinear modes and describe the general patterns that govern the birth of nonlinear modes emerging in spectral gaps near band edges. We show that nonlinear modes in a symmetric potential undergo both symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcations and saddle-node bifurcations, mimicking the prototypical behaviors of symmetric and asymmetric double-well potentials. The properties of the nonlinear modes differ for bifurcations occurring below and above the mobility edge. In the generic case, when the quasiperiodic potential consists of two incommensurate lattices with a nonzero phase shift between them, the formation of localized modes in the spectral gaps occurs through a cascade of saddle-node bifurcations. Because of the analogy between the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, our results can also be applied to optical modes guided by quasiperiodic photonic lattices.

Localization of a Bose-Einstein-condensate vortex in a bichromatic optical lattice

Sadhan K. Adhikari

By numerical simulation of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation we show that a weakly interacting or noninteracting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) vortex can be localized in a three-dimensional bichromatic quasiperiodic optical-lattice (OL) potential generated by the superposition of two standing-wave polarized laser beams with incommensurate wavelengths. We also study the localization of a (nonrotating) BEC in two and three dimensions by bichromatic OL potentials along orthogonal directions. This is a generalization of the localization of a BEC in a one-dimensional bichromatic OL as studied in a recent experiment [Roati et al., Nature 453, 895 (2008)]. We demonstrate the stability of the localized state by considering its time evolution in the form of a stable breathing oscillation in a slightly altered potential for a large period of time. Finally, we consider the localization of a BEC in a random one-dimensional potential in the form of several identical repulsive spikes arbitrarily distributed in space.

Dynamics in multiple-well Bose-Einstein condensates

M. Nigro, P. Capuzzi, Horacio M. Cataldo +1 more

We study the dynamics of three-dimensional weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates using a multimode model with an effective interaction parameter. The system is confined by a ring-shaped four-well trapping potential. By constructing a two-mode Hamiltonian in a reduced highly symmetric phase space, we examine the periodic orbits and calculate their time periods both in the self-trapping and Josephson regimes. The dynamics in the vicinity of the reduced phase space is investigated by means of a Floquet multiplier analysis, finding regions of different linear stability and analyzing their implications on the exact dynamics. The numerical exploration in an extended region of the phase space demonstrates that two-mode tools can also be useful for performing a partition of the space in different regimes. Comparisons with Gross-Pitaevskii simulations confirm these findings and emphasize the importance of properly determining the effective on-site interaction parameter governing the multimode dynamics.
