Abstract

Abstract Boundary conditions for a massless Dirac fermion in 2+1 dimensions where the space is a half-plane are discussed in detail. It is argued that linear boundary conditions that leave the Hamiltonian Hermitian generically break C P and T symmetries as well as Lorentz and conformal symmetry. We show that there is essentially one special case where a single species of fermion has C PT and the full Poincare and conformal symmetry of the boundary. We show that, with doubled fermions, there is a second special case which respects C PT but still violates Lorentz and conformal symmetry. This second special case is essentially the unique boundary condition where the Dirac operator has fermion zero mode edge states. We discuss how the edge states lead to exotic representations of scale, phase and translation symmetries and how imposing a symmetry requirement leads to edge ferromagnetism of the system. We prove that the exotic ferromagnetic representations are indeed carried by the ground states of the system perturbed by a class of interaction Hamiltonians which includes the non-relativistic Coulomb interaction.

Boundary States for Chiral Symmetries in Two Dimensions

Philip Boyle Smith, David Tong

Abstract: We study boundary states for Dirac fermions in d = 1 + 1 dimensions that preserve Abelian chiral symmetries, meaning that the left- and right-moving fermions carry different charges. We derive simple expressions, in terms of the fermion charge assignments, for the boundary central charge and for the ground state degeneracy of the system when two different boundary conditions are imposed at either end of an interval. We show that all such boundary states fall into one of two classes, related to SPT phases supported by (−1)F , which are characterised by the existence of an unpaired Majorana zero mode.

Nonrelativistic Dirac fermions on the torus

Jeremías Aguilera Damia, Mario Solís, Gonzalo Torroba

Abstract Two dimensional conformal field theories have been extensively studied in the past. When considered on the torus, they are strongly constrained by modular invariance. However, introducing relevant deformations or chemical potentials pushes these theories away from criticality, where many of their aspects are still poorly understood. In this note we make a step towards filling this gap, by analyzing the theory of a Dirac fermion on the torus, deformed by a mass term and a chemical potential for the particle number symmetry. The theory breaks conformal and Lorentz invariance, and we study its spectrum and partition function. We also focus on two limits that are interesting on their own right: a massless relativistic fermion with nonzero chemical potential (a simple model for CFTs at finite density), and nonrelativistic Schrodinger fermions (of relevance in condensed matter systems). Taking inspiration from recent developments in massive modular forms, we obtain a representation of the torus free energy based on Fourier-transforming over a twisted boundary condition. This dual representation fullfills many properties analogous to modular invariance in CFTs. In particular, we use this result to derive Cardy-like formulas for the high energy density of states of these theories.

Total and symmetry resolved entanglement spectra in some fermionic CFTs from the BCFT approach

Himanshu Gaur

A bstract In this work, we study the universal total and symmetry-resolved entanglement spectra for a single interval of some 2d Fermionic CFTs using the Boundary Conformal Field theory (BCFT) approach. In this approach, the partition of Hilbert space is achieved by cutting out discs around the entangling boundary points and imposing boundary conditions preserving the extended symmetry under scrutiny. The reduced density moments are then related to the BCFT partition functions and are also found to be diagonal in the symmetry charge sectors. In particular, we first study the entanglement spectra of massless Dirac fermion and modular invariant Z 2 -gauged Dirac fermion by considering the boundary conditions preserving either the axial or the vector U(1) symmetry. The total entanglement spectra of the modular invariant Z 2 -gauged Dirac fermion are shown to match with the compact boson result at the compactification radius where the Bose-Fermi duality holds, while for the massless Dirac fermion, it is found that the boundary entropy term doesn’t match with the self-dual compact boson. The symmetry-resolved entanglement is found to be the same in all cases, except for the charge spectrum which is dependent on both the symmetry and the theory. We also study the entanglement spectra of N massless Dirac fermions by considering boundary conditions preserving different chiral U(1) N symmetries. Entanglement spectra are studied for U(1) M subgroups, where M ≤ N , by imposing boundary conditions preserving different chiral symmetries. The total entanglement spectra are found to be sensitive to the representations of the U(1) M symmetry in the boundary theory among other behaviours at O (1). Similar results are also found for the Symmetry resolved entanglement entropies. The characteristic log log ( ℓ / ϵ ) term of the U(1) symmetry is found to be proportional to M in the symmetry-resolved entanglement spectra.

Chern insulator boundary criticality

Benjamin Moy, Eduardo Fradkin

We investigate signatures of chirality at Chern insulator transitions in the presence of a boundary. The transition between a trivial insulator and a Chern insulator with Chern number $C=1$ is described by a massless Dirac fermion whose parity anomaly gives a critical Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}=\frac{1}{2}\frac{e^2}{h}$. Using a Dirac mass domain wall construction, we show that the chiral edge mode delocalizes into the bulk at criticality, but the boundary fermion correlation function retains a chiral structure and acquires the scaling dimension of the bulk fermion. We compute current correlation functions and demonstrate that the anomaly of the bulk Hall response is matched by delocalized chiral modes near the boundary. Using only the residual conformal symmetry of a (2+1)d conformal field theory (CFT) in a half-space, we identify parity-odd terms in current and energy-momentum tensor correlation functions that encode these modes and determine their electromagnetic and gravitational anomaly coefficients. Our analysis therefore applies to general time-reversal breaking (2+1)d CFTs, beyond the free Dirac transition. In particular, the analysis of the gravitational anomaly is also applicable to the free Majorana CFT governing the transition between a trivial superconductor and a topological superconductor. We also extend our results to more general Chern number changing transitions and to the transition between a (3+1)d topological insulator and a trivial insulator.

Boundary Criticality in (2+1)-dimensional U(1) Dirac Quantum Spin Liquid

Huan Jiang, Zhiming Pan, Xue-Jia Yu +1 more

An emergent gauge field can control boundary critical behavior without changing the bulk quantum spin liquid. We investigate the boundary criticality in $(2+1)$-dimensional $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid, whose low-energy physics is described by massless quantum electrodynamics. Using a perturbative renormalization-group analysis in a half-space, we show that Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions for the emergent gauge field lead to distinct boundary universality classes. We determine the boundary scaling dimensions of the fundamental fields and gauge-invariant operators that provide observable signatures. We further propose a fermion-gauge lattice model with tunable boundary interactions as a microscopic setting for realizing and probing these boundary universality classes.
