Abstract

We explore unconventional superconductivity of repulsive spinless fermions on square and honeycomb lattices with staggered sublattice potentials. The two lattices can exhibit staggered $d$-wave and $f$-wave pairing, respectively, at low doping stemming from an effective two-valley band structure. At higher doping, in particular, the square lattice displays a much richer phase diagram including topological $p+ip$ superconductivity which is induced by a qualitatively different mechanism compared to the $d$-wave pairing. We illuminate this from several complementary perspectives: We analytically perform sublattice projection to analyze the effective continuum low-energy description and we numerically calculate the binding energies for pair and larger bound states for few-body doping near half filling. Furthermore, for finite doping, we present phase diagrams based on extensive functional renormalization group and and density matrix renormalization group calculations.

Interacting spinless fermions on the square lattice: Charge order, phase separation, and superconductivity

Kou-Han Ma, Ning-Hua Tong

We investigate the phase diagram of spinless fermions on a square lattice with nearest-neighbor interaction, using the recently developed projective truncation approximation in Green's function equation of motion. For attractive interaction, the ground state is in a homogeneous $p+ip$ superconducting (SC) phase at high or low fermion densities. Near half filling is a phase separation (PS) between the SC phases. Allowing inhomogeneous solution, we obtain $p$-wave SC domains with positive interface energy. As temperature increases, the SC phases transit into normal phases above ${T}_{\mathrm{sc}}$, generating a homogeneous normal phase (far away from $n=1/2$), or a PS between normal phases with different densities (close to $n=1/2$). Further increasing temperature to ${T}_{\mathrm{ps}}$, the PS disappears and the particle-hole symmetry of the Hamiltonian is recovered. For repulsive interaction, depending on the filling, the ground state is in charge-ordered phase (half filling), charge-disordered phase (large hole/particle doping), or PS between them (weak doping). At finite temperature, the regime of charge order phase moves to finite $V$ and extends to finite doping regime.

Unconventional superconductity can be induced by electron--electron repulsion and is influenced by the lattice symmetries. Here, various types of unconventional superconductivity are shown to be realized on the square and the honeycomb lattice with sublattice potentials.

Unconventional superconductivity in the extended Hubbard model: Weak-coupling renormalization group

Sebastian Wolf, Thomas L. Schmidt, Stephan Rachel

In superconducting phases, repulsive interactions between the electrons usually lead to higher-angular momentum Cooper pairing. Here, the authors employ the weak-coupling renormalization group approach to study unconventional superconducting phases emerging in the extended, repulsive Hubbard model on paradigmatic two-dimensional lattices. Among their findings are extended regions of chiral topological superconductivity on the square, triangular, and honeycomb lattices. They provide detailed superconducting phase diagrams as well as the coupling strengths that quantify the corresponding critical temperatures depending on the band-structure parameters, band filling, and interaction parameters. The importance of the resolution and accuracy of the numerical integration for the method is discussed and a way to higher numerical efficiency provided.

Bond-ordered states and f -wave pairing of spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice

Stephan Heßelmann, Daniel D. Scherer, Michael M. Scherer +1 more

Spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice with repulsive nearest-neighbor interactions are known to harbour a quantum critical point at half-filling, with critical behavior in the Gross-Neveu (chiral Ising) universality class. The critical interaction strength separates a weak-coupling semimetallic regime from a commensurate charge-density-wave phase. The phase diagram of this basic model of correlated fermions on the honeycomb lattice beyond half-filling is, however, less well established. Here, we perform an analysis of its many-body instabilities using the functional renormalization group method with a basic Fermi surface patching scheme, which allows us to treat instabilities in competing channels on equal footing also away from half-filling. Between half-filling and the Van Hove filling, the free Fermi surface is holelike and we again find a charge-density wave instability to be dominant at large interactions. Moreover, its characteristics are those of the half-filled case. Directly at the Van Hove filling, the nesting property of the free Fermi surface stabilizes a dimerized bond-order phase. At lower filling, the free Fermi surface becomes electronlike and a superconducting instability with $f$-wave symmetry is found to emerge from the interplay of intra-unit-cell repulsion and collective fluctuations in the proximity to the charge-density wave instability. We estimate the extent of the various phases and extract the corresponding order parameters from the effective low-energy Hamiltonians.

Phases of the two-band model of spinless fermions in one dimension

Urs Ledermann, Karyn Le Hur

We study the two-band model of spinless fermions in one dimension for weak repulsive interactions. In this case, the model is equivalent to the weakly interacting spinless two-leg ladder. We obtain nonuniversal analytic expressions for the power-law decays $\ensuremath{\propto}{x}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ of the charge-density and $\ensuremath{\propto}{x}^{\ensuremath{-}1/\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ of the superconducting pairing correlation functions. To leading order in the doping $\ensuremath{\delta}$ away from half filling and ${t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}/t,$ we find $\ensuremath{\gamma}=1+({\ensuremath{\pi}}^{2}{/8)(t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}{/t)}^{2}{\ensuremath{\delta}}^{2}$ $(t$ and ${t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ are the hopping terms along and between the chains), such that superconducting pairing correlations dominate. We furthermore show that the transition from the superconducting phase to the usual one-dimensional (Luttinger) metal occurs via a mixed phase, where superconducting pairs are formed in the bonding band only. We give the phase diagram as a function of temperature and doping.

Spin-charge separation and unconventional superconductivity in the t − J model on the honeycomb lattice

Jian-Jian Miao, Zheng-Yuan Yue, Hao Zhang +2 more

The physical nature of doped Mott insulators has been the subject of intensive study for decades. The single-band Hubbard model and the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model on a bipartite lattice are widely recognized as the simplest models to describe these materials. However, the key mechanism of superconductivity in these toy models remains unclear. Here we propose a novel mechanism for the ($d+id$)-wave superconductivity (SC) that occurs in the small-doping region of the honeycomb lattice $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model based on the Grassmann tensor product state numerical simulation and spin-charge separation formulation. In the presence of anti-ferromagnetic order near half-filling, we develop a continuum effective field theory for holons, which reveals the competition between repulsive and attractive holon interactions induced by spinon fluctuations and gauge fluctuations, respectively. When $t/J$ is large, the repulsive interaction dominates, leading to a non-Fermi liquid behavior; while in a moderate range of $t/J$, the attractive interaction dominates, leading to the SC order. Potential theoretical and experimental methods to validate the mechanism are discussed.
