Abstract

The asymptotic dynamical correlation functions in one-dimensional spin chains are described by power laws. The corresponding exponents characterize different bulk and boundary critical behavior. We present results for the logarithmic contribution to the boundary correlations of an isotropic Heisenberg chain. The exponent of the logarithm, $\ensuremath{\lambda}=1$, is derived using a renormalization group technique. We confirm our analytical results by comparing with numerical quantum Monte Carlo data.

Density-matrix renormalization-group analysis of quantum critical points: Quantum spin chains

Shan-Wen Tsai, John Bradley Marston

We present a simple method, combining the density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm with finite-size scaling, which permits the study of critical behavior in quantum spin chains. Spin moments and dimerization are induced by boundary conditions at the chain ends and these exhibit power-law decay at critical points. Results are presented for the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet; an analytic calculation shows that logarithmic corrections to scaling can sometimes be avoided. We also examine the spin-1 chain at the critical point separating the Haldane gap and dimerized phases. Exponents for the dimer-dimer and the spin-spin correlation functions are consistent with results obtained from bosonization.

Correlation functions of one-dimensional quantum systems

Thierry Giamarchi, Heinz J. Schulz

A number of one-dimensional quantum systems like interacting fermions or spin chains can be described in terms of a generalized quantum sine-Gordon Hamiltonian. The transfer-matrix formulation of critical two-dimensional models also frequently leads to sine-Gordon Hamiltonians. We compute here the different correlation functions of such a model using a real-space renormalization technique. Our renormalization calculation gives us the exponents of the correlation functions as well as the corrections to the usual power-law behavior due to marginally irrelevant operators. Except on the critical line, where logarithmic corrections exist at all length scales, the correlation functions decay like power laws, with amplitude corrections from the marginal operators. The logarithmic corrections always appear at short length scale. The complete crossover between the two behaviors is given by our equations. The implication of our calculation for physical systems like the one-dimensional electron gas, quantum spin chains, and two-dimensional statistical systems is discussed.

Finite-size scaling for the spin-Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain

Victor Barzykin, Ian K. Affleck

Corrections to the asymptotic correlation function in a Heisenberg spin- antiferromagnetic spin chain are known to vanish slowly (logarithmically) as a function of the distance r or the chain size L . This leads to significant differences with numerical results. We calculate the sub-leading logarithmic corrections to the finite-size correlation function, using renormalization group improved perturbation theory, and compare the result with numerical data.

Correlation amplitude for the S=12 XXZ spin chain in the critical region: Numerical renormalization-group study of an open chain

Takashi Hikihara, Akira Furusaki

The density-matrix renormalization-group technique is used to calculate the spin-correlation functions $〈{S}_{j}^{x}{S}_{k}^{x}〉$ and $〈{S}_{j}^{z}{S}_{k}^{z}〉$ of the one-dimensional $S=\frac{1}{2}$ $\mathrm{XXZ}$ model in the gapless regime. The numerical results for open chains of 200 spins are analyzed by comparing them with correlation functions calculated from a low-energy field theory. This gives precise estimates of the amplitudes of the correlation functions in the thermodynamic limit. The exact amplitude recently conjectured by Lukyanov and Zamolodchikov and the logarithmic correction in the Heisenberg model are confirmed numerically.

Logarithmic corrections to bulk and surface criticality in a three-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Xuyang Liang, Xiao-Chuan Wu, Zenan Liu +3 more

At the bulk upper critical dimension, marginally irrelevant interactions generate multiplicative logarithmic corrections to mean-field scaling. While these corrections are well understood for bulk observables, their consequences for boundary criticality, particularly for finite-size scaling, remain much less explored. Here we combine large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations with boundary renormalization-group analysis to study a (3 + 1)D O(3) quantum critical point. After verifying the known logarithmically modified bulk finite-size scaling, including the correlation-length scaling governed by the logarithmic finite-size exponent \hat{\coppa}, we tune the surface coupling to identify ordinary, special, and extraordinary boundary regimes. For the ordinary and special transitions, we derive logarithmic correction exponents and \hat{\coppa}-dependent finite-size scaling forms for boundary correlations, including results that have not been systematically established before. These predictions are quantitatively supported by Monte Carlo data. In the extraordinary regime, we find long-range surface magnetic order and a logarithmically enhanced surface-bulk correlation.

Quantum Critical Scaling and Temperature-Dependent Logarithmic Corrections in the Spin-Half Heisenberg Chain

Oleg A. Starykh, Rajiv R. P. Singh, Anders W. Sandvik

Low temperature dynamics of the $S\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain is studied via a simple ansatz generalizing the conformal mapping and analytic continuation procedures to correlation functions with multiplicative logarithmic factors. Closed form expressions for the dynamic susceptibility and the NMR relaxation rates $1/{T}_{1}$ and $1/{T}_{2G}$ are obtained, and are argued to improve the agreement with recent experiments. Scaling in $q/T$ and $\ensuremath{\omega}/T$ are violated due to these logarithmic terms. Numerical results show that the logarithmic corrections are very robust. While not yet in the asymptotic low temperature regime, they provide striking qualitative confirmation of the theoretical results.
