Quantum Information with Integrated Photonics

Paolo Piergentili, Francesco Amanti, Greta Andrini +38 more

Since the 1980s, researchers have taken giant steps in understanding how to use quantum mechanics for solving real problems—for example, making a computer that works according to the laws of quantum mechanics. In recent decades, researchers have tried to develop a platform for quantum information and computation that can be integrated into digital and telecom technologies without the need of a cryogenic environment. The current status of research in the field of quantum integrated photonics will be reviewed. A review of the most common integrated photonic platforms will be given, together with the main achievements and results in the last decade.

Integrated photonics in quantum technologies

Taira Giordani, Francesco Hoch, Gonzalo Carvacho +2 more

Abstract Quantum information processing is nowadays an established branch of quantum mechanics applications. Recent results in different areas, ranging from communications to computing, show that quantum technologies are advancing towards being mature platforms with substantial advantages over traditional classical protocols. Quantum optics and photonic apparatuses are one of the best candidates for the realization of quantum processors. In this context, integrated photonic technologies are essential components towards miniaturisation of such complex optical systems. Integrated optical devices enabled an important improvement in the level of complexity in the generation and processing of quantum states of light. This review aims at providing an exhaustive framework of the advances of integrated quantum photonic platforms, for what concerns the integration of sources, manipulation, and detectors, as well as the contributions in quantum computing, cryptography and simulations.

Thin-film lithium niobate quantum photonics: review and perspectives

Fabien Labbé, Çağın Ekici, Innokentiy S. Zhdanov +3 more

Photonics has proven to be a very attractive platform for quantum technologies, offering key features such as high-fidelity qubits and room-temperature signal processing. Advancements in integrated photonics are expected to further enhance these capabilities as the technology evolves from few-photon architectures to systems capable of generating and processing tens, possibly hundreds, of photons, marking critical progress toward scalable quantum information processing. Although each integrated platform has its own unique advantages and limitations, thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) photonics has recently emerged as a strong contender thanks to its low-loss characteristics, large electro-optic and nonlinear coefficients, broad transparency window, and ultra-fast modulation capabilities. In this review, we examine the latest developments in TFLN quantum photonics and identify promising directions and challenges for future research in this field.
