Exact solutions in interacting many-body systems are scarce but extremely valuable since they provide insights into the dynamics. Dual-unitary models are examples in one spatial dimension where this is possible. These brick-wall quantum circuits consist of local gates, which remain unitary not only in time, but also when interpreted as evolutions along the spatial directions. However, this setting of unitary dynamics does not directly apply to real-world systems due to their imperfect isolation, and it is thus imperative to consider the impact of noise to dual-unitary dynamics and its exact solvability. In this work we generalise the ideas of dual-unitarity to obtain exact solutions in noisy quantum circuits, where each unitary gate is substituted by a local quantum channel. Exact solutions are obtained by demanding that the noisy gates yield a valid quantum channel not only in time, but also when interpreted as evolutions along one or both of the spatial directions and possibly backwards in time. This gives rise to new families of models that satisfy different combinations of unitality constraints along the space and time directions. We provide exact solutions for the spatio-temporal correlation functions, spatial correlations after a quantum quench, and the structure of steady states for these families of models. We show that noise unbiased around the dual-unitary family leads to exactly solvable models, even if dual-unitarity is strongly violated. We prove that any channel unital in both space and time directions can be written as an affine combination of a particular class of dual-unitary gates. Finally, we extend the definition of solvable initial states to matrix-product density operators. We completely classify them when their tensor admits a local purification.

Quantum dynamics with local interactions in lattice models display rich physics, but is notoriously hard to study. Dual-unitary circuits allow for exact answers to interesting physical questions in clean or disordered one- and higher-dimensional quantum systems. However, this family of models shows some non-universal features, like vanishing correlations inside the light-cone and instantaneous thermalization of local observables. In this work we propose a generalization of dual-unitary circuits where the exactly calculable spatial-temporal correlation functions display richer behavior, and have non-trivial thermalization of local observables. This is achieved by generalizing the single-gate condition to a hierarchy of multi-gate conditions, where the first level recovers dual-unitary models, and the second level exhibits these new interesting features. We also extend the discussion and provide exact solutions to correlators with few-site observables and discuss higher-orders, including the ones after a quantum quench. In addition, we provide exhaustive parametrizations for qubit cases, and propose a new family of models for local dimensions larger than two, which also provides a new family of dual-unitary models.
Exactly solvable models in quantum many-body dynamics provide valuable insights into many interesting physical phenomena and serve as platforms for rigorously investigating fundamental theoretical questions. Nevertheless, they are extremely rare and existing solvable models and solution techniques have serious limitations. In this paper, we present a family of exactly solvable unitary circuits that model quantum many-body dynamics in discrete space and time. Unlike many previous solvable models, one can exactly compute the full quantum dynamics initialized from any matrix product state in this family of models. The time evolution of local observables and correlations, the linear growth of Rényi entanglement entropy, spatiotemporal correlations, and out-of-time-order correlations are all exactly computable. A key property of these models enabling the exact solution is that any time-evolved local operator is an exact matrix product operator with a finite bond dimension, even at arbitrarily long times, which we prove using the underlying C * -(weak) Hopf algebra structure along with tensor network techniques. We lay down the general framework for construction and solution of this family of models, and give several explicit examples. In particular, we study in detail a model constructed out of a C * -weak Hopf algebra that is very close to a Floquet version of the PXP model, and the exact results we obtain may shed light on the phenomenon of quantum many-body scars, and more generally, Floquet quantum dynamics in constrained systems.
We consider a class of quantum lattice models in 1+1 dimensions represented as local quantum circuits that enjoy a particular dual-unitarity property. In essence, this property ensures that both the evolution in time and that in space are given in terms of unitary transfer matrices. We show that for this class of circuits, generically nonintegrable, one can compute explicitly all dynamical correlations of local observables. Our result is exact, nonpertubative, and holds for any dimension d of the local Hilbert space. In the minimal case of qubits (d=2) we also present a classification of all dual-unitary circuits which allows us to single out a number of distinct classes for the behavior of the dynamical correlations. We find noninteracting classes, where all correlations are preserved, the ergodic and mixing one, where all correlations decay, and, interestingly, also classes that are both interacting and nonergodic.
In recent years dual-unitary circuits and their multi-unitary generalizations have emerged as exactly solvable yet chaotic models of quantum many-body dynamics. However, a systematic picture for the solvability of multi-unitary dynamics remains missing. We present a framework encompassing a large class of such non-integrable models with exactly solvable dynamics, which we term \emph{completely reducible} circuits. In these circuits, the entanglement membrane determining operator growth and entanglement dynamics can be characterized analytically. Completely reducible circuits extend the notion of space-time symmetry to more general lattice geometries, breaking dual-unitarity globally but not locally, and allow for a rich phenomenology going beyond dual-unitarity. As example, we introduce circuits that support four and five directions of information flow. We derive a general expression for the entanglement line tension in terms of the pattern of information flow in spacetime. The solvability is shown to be related to the absence of knots of this information flow, connecting entanglement dynamics to the Kauffman bracket as knot invariant. Building on these results, we propose that in general non-integrable dynamics the curvature of the entanglement line tension can be interpreted as a density of information transport. Our results provide a new and unified framework for exactly solvable models of many-body quantum chaos, encompassing and extending known constructions.
Dual-unitary quantum circuits have recently attracted attention as an analytically tractable model of many-body quantum dynamics. Consisting of a 1+1D lattice of 2-qudit gates arranged in a 'brickwork' pattern, these models are defined by the constraint that each gate must remain unitary under swapping the roles of space and time. This dual-unitarity restricts the dynamics of local operators in these circuits: the support of any such operator must grow at the effective speed of light of the system, along one or both of the edges of a causal light cone set by the geometry of the circuit. Using this property, it is shown here that for 1+1D dual-unitary circuits the set of width- w conserved densities (constructed from operators supported over w consecutive sites) is in one-to-one correspondence with the set of width- w solitons – operators which, up to a multiplicative phase, are simply spatially translated at the effective speed of light by the dual-unitary dynamics. A number of ways to construct these many-body solitons (explicitly in the case where the local Hilbert space dimension d=2 ) are then demonstrated: firstly, via a simple construction involving products of smaller, constituent solitons; and secondly, via a construction which cannot be understood as simply in terms of products of smaller solitons, but which does have a neat interpretation in terms of products of fermions under a Jordan-Wigner transformation. This provides partial progress towards a characterisation of the microscopic structure of complex many-body solitons (in dual-unitary circuits on qubits), whilst also establishing a link between fermionic models and dual-unitary circuits, advancing our understanding of what kinds of physics can be explored in this framework.
Abstract Recently introduced dual unitary brickwork circuits have been recognised as paradigmatic exactly solvable quantum chaotic many-body systems with tunable degree of ergodicity and mixing. Here we show that regularity of the circuit lattice is not crucial for exact solvability. We consider a circuit where random 2-qubit dual unitary gates sit at intersections of random arrangements of straight lines in two dimensions (mikado) and analytically compute the variance of the spatio-temporal correlation function of local operators. Note that the average correlator vanishes due to local Haar randomness of the gates. The result can be physically motivated for two random mikado settings. The first corresponds to the thermal state of free particles carrying internal qubit degrees of freedom which experience interaction at kinematic crossings, while the second represents rotationally symmetric (random euclidean) space-time.
